1 GPU + Motherboard = Hybrid CrossfireX - ATI/AMD's answer to SLI

You can pair two graphics cards together to get SLI or CrossfireX. But what happens when you only have ONE GPU? Pair it with your... motherboard!? Apparently that was a thing with ATI/AMD Hybrid CrossfireX!
