Alan and I construct a few different varieties of poncho shelters and use a poncho to collect buckets of drinkable water!
Helikon Tex is my preferred brand of poncho. Here is a link.

Here is a link to a less expensive poncho. I cannot vouch for this one as I have no personal experience with it. Seems descent based upon first glance.

I was recon in Vicenza when the first gortex rain gear was issued to us in 1988 or so. We still carried the tried and true poncho as a field expedient hooch or to keep our rucks from totally getting drenched. Still carry one even now in my backpack along with poncho liner. Great channel!

Best channel on RU-vid! So awesome that you and Alan continue to share your knowledge, after Alone it would have been so easy to disappear into obscurity after making a huge impact on everyone who watched - it's incredible to have the opportunity to keep learning. Thank you!!!

Poncho is going to be the third most versatile survival item. Duct tape is #1 of course and a good knife (especially if you’re a multi tool purist) is #2. Duct tape speaks for itself, you can make pretty much all of your gear out of it aside from a knife. You can repair all of your gear with it. Last but not least it’s great fire tinder. A knife is a knife, it has no replacement.

@sheepmasterrace
@sheepmasterrace 11 месяцев назад
that’s really interesting. most expert backpackers say that a knife is the most overrated pieces of kit. everyone wants one to be cool, but rarely uses it. I wonder why?
@zBMatt
@zBMatt 11 месяцев назад
@@sheepmasterrace it’s because backpacking setups don’t need knives, they bring in gear that’s knifeless. The knife is a very useful tool.

Outstanding video! I stopped watching television when it went digital. But I was taking care of my elderly Mother when Season One of Alone was on. And I watched it every week. I picked Alan to last the longest by the third episode. You guys have a great channel. It’s one of a very few that I recommend.

I have an old European ex army poncho, can’t remember which army but it is a heavy rubber covered material, and when it’s absolutely hosing down it works a treat, it is heavy Hough and does not breathe like modern goretex rain jackets, which I have used in the snow up a mountain and they are brilliantly too.

I just watched episode three of the first season of Alone. And I realize the exact moment that I knew Alan was going to win. When the other folks were talking about building shelters, and the things they needed to do to survive, Alan said that the wilderness was his church, his Temple. That was where he went to get in touch with Creation and the Creator. I have always felt that way. Even when I was s boy, five years old, I felt safe in the woods. I felt strong, and alive. The first time I saw the Rocky Mountains, it felt as if I had just come home from a long hard trip.

I wonder how long the seams holding the tied parts will last🤔 as well with the water repell in general. Im currently hunting for the perfect poncho/tent out there and wanna make sure i get one that i can use time and time again. Its coming to the conclusion that i just need to start getting them and using them to find out for myself. Great video, this ones going on my list as well

A military poncho is both a tent and raincoat, u can get one for 40 bucks in any army surplus, no need to spend hundreds on fancy tents that take a lot of space

Ponchos are waterproof therefore causing perspiration. Also they get easily caught on shrubbery potentially causing damage. Otherwise, if sufficient in size they can make a reasonable tarp. Few ponchos cover one's arms down to the hands as yours does, therefore a large majority are insufficient in size.

@@ONThree A combination of a breathable waterproofed anorak, over-pants and a poncho or tent. The combination of my DIY anorak and over-pants weight a mere 6.25 ounces and fold down to 2 items that fit in each of the palms of my hands. An anorak will not normally get caught up in brush. I tested my DIY heat reflective, breathable, wind resistant and water proofed anorak against cut/trimmed brush with no damage. My DIY anoraks were made from Tyvek 14-S, SOL Escape Bivy and 2GO Systems Poncho Tarp materials. The conversion to an anorak of Systems Poncho Tarp was simple although the heaviest and bulkiest of the materials. You can get Tyvek without the heat reflectivity. A fellow on RU-vid went out in the rain with uncoated Tyvek overalls. He was happy with the result. The breathability of those materials is very good. My DIY 4.05 ounce Dyneema floorless diamond shaped tent, 4.0 feet x 8.5 feet x 40 inches high opens up like a tarp if preferred. It has a waterproof entry/exit zipper and waterproof vent with mosquito netting and hood. It has a loop at the peak for hanging it from above by 8 or more methods or can use a pole if desired or necessary. My DIY tent is perhaps the lightest tent in the world.

I see all these go light guys taking a poncho stringing it up alone or over a hammock showing Utube they are all knowledgeable yet let's say they string that up for cover because it's raining throw there gear under it because hey they are smarter than the average guy go out to collect firewood come back drenched get a fire going so take off clothing to start drying. Well if you have done this very thing say towards fall cool breeze you know it takes a long time to dry a piece of clothing by a fire and with a breeze and with rain still coming down wouldn't it be a no brainer to of carried 2 ponchos one for cover one for rain wear and skip all the cloths drying all together that extra little bit of weight far outweighs shivering under a poncho shelter while you try and dry cloths out. I know the guys who carry a poncho and to drum liners will say hey that's why we have a drum liner all good but again in comfortable leaves arms unprotected and for a big guy trying to do camp chores because of a unsuspecting lost night in the woods it's just adds more to frustration to a already crappy situation.

That's why I go with 2 Ponchos since years. It covers my Pack and me in seconds and I stay dry while I search a spot to make a Shelter with the 2nd. If I'm covered I can use the first as a Groundsheet or to make an A-frame out of the Lean-to.

its supposed to be in conjunction with your sleep system bud... lol this is solely the shelter from rain aspect. pair this with a footprint or tarp on the ground, then your sleeping pad/mat. possibly a bivvy bag around your sleeping bag/wool blanket and u get the picture. dry and warm. atleast as long as you remembered to dry bag all your sleep equipment and spare clothes, youll have a nice dry place to sleep, and nice dry garments to wear while you do it. hope this helps!

if you have time and its really dumping out, you can even dig a little trench around the shelter to direct run off AWAY from the shelter to prevent flooding in longer term if your bunked up for a full day or two.
