Nebraska had an amazing 30 year run under Devaney & Osborne, but all good things must come to an end. I would've loved to have been alive as a Nebraska fan during the 70's, 80's, & 90's.
Yeah, I loved them since I was a little kid. The first i÷back i watched was Jarvis redwine. I finally gave up on them this summer. Too many years of them just getting blown out Every time they play a good team.
I’m a Husker fan from Lincoln. I was at that game. I call it the game where everything changed. Side note: The CO fans were the most classless I’ve ever encountered.
This was the sea-change game for the Nebraska football program. This was the end of them as a national power. In fact, I would say that this was the single most damaging defeat suffered by any program in the last 20 years in terms of what followed. They got beat so bad that it was a reputation-destroyer. The blowout loss to Miami in the Rose Bowl only served as confirmation.
The strength of their program was the walk-on tradition and development of mediocre players. They always had fresh bodies that were willing to punish themselves to give the starters a good look. If you walked on to Nebraska, you were on the team. It was about what can I do for the team. But with today’s millennials having less interest in sports the walk on thing is pretty much dead.
walterlv01: Single most damaging defeat in 20 years? Not even close. Hell, this game didn't even keep them out of the NC. This is not how it works. You think if Nebraska had won this game they would have gone on to be a top ten to top five team every year after that to this day? First, Nebraska had already slipped from dominance. In 2000 they got plastered by OU who won the NC. In this season, Nebraska was still a great team, just not at the top. The next year is when they really got exposed multiple times when all the talent and well coached players of Osborne ran out. I mean, you could say this game marked the beginning of the end, and certainly a tough defeat, big win for Colorado, but this one game was not the cause of their fall, more like the result.
I agree with the last post. I truly miss the old BIG 8 Conference. I am a Buff Fan but I loved watching so many of those Nebraska & Oklahoma teams! Truly a conference that had some class.
As a born and raised Husker. I have to say.....job well done. We were always looking for a worthy adversary. Too bad we made it to the national title game and you didnt.
"My first team I ever cheered for CU Buffs! Never will forget that 1990 season." You mean the year that CO failed to win the NC outright. We all remember that too. 1 half assed championship in program history (130 yrs and counting).
I was at this game. Never seen so many Nebraska fans in tears. This place was so loud and the fans were pumped even before the game started. Go Buffs!!
"I was at this game" Come on, be honest how disappointed were you when Miami trounced Neb the next game? Suddenly, I mean real suddenly, this game spoke nothing about how good CO was, but rather how bad Neb was and then to see Neb fall off the map rather quickly, this has to be and "oh well", game for you.
Incredible, I can't believe it took 11 years for someone to edit this down and put on RU-vid, you sir are a great American. Single best sporting event I've ever witnessed, still gives me goosebumps!
WTF? Miami confirmed in the next game that 2001 Neb was a farce. No doubt you were/are a desperate CO fan needing to make this something it wasn't. Neb just sucked.
@@robjohnson8861 Farce in what way? Obviously they weren't really #1 but deserved a top 5 ranking. 2001 Miami is the best college football team all-time they kicked everyones teeth in.
Don't forget, Nebraska responded with a 27-7 run after Colorado jumped out to their 35-3 lead. After Colorado made it 42-16 in the second quarter, Colorado went well over a quarter without scoring. The death knell for Nebraska in this game was the Diedrick fumble at the goal line when it was 42-23 Colorado. But as a Husker fan, I give Colorado a lot of credit with 20 straight points having their lead cut to 12. I thought at 42-30 we had a chance. The Buffalos had other plans
I'm dieheart Nebraska fan this game gave us death penalty. . We haven't been same since.. I've watch this game bout million .. .. deep down we should won this game even though Chris Brown hurt us.
@@ricofoxworth177 why should Neb have won this game? I'm not trying to be a smartass. I'm asking this as a serious question. Maybe you're right. The only thing i can think of is that huskers were rated higher
That's a good point. Nebraska rallied and it actually looked like they might win before they lost momentum. I remember thinking what a remarkable comeback for Nebraska.
@@ricofoxworth177 Nebraska actually played pretty well. I don't think they should be ashamed. Chris Brown was a generational running back. I've honestly never seen anyone quite as talented as he was. Colorado was especially very lucky to have him. He was incredible.
I was there 15 years ago!!!! my dad my brother and my mother's 4 brothers are all grads from cu!! I watched em all lose for many years but we will have PAC 12 champ title today!! love you all hope the best for this state and it's families!!!
When people question the rivalry, I point to the 80s, 90s, and this game. We literally destroyed their program that beautiful Friday. One of my favorite days ever at Folsom. Truly rockin'. Chris Brown was so dominant. I forgot how great Bobby Purify was that day too.
It's still amazing to me that even with this loss, Nebraska was still allowed to play in the Rose Bowl against Miami. Whoever was behind should've deserved the right to play Miami. Not saying that team would've beaten Miami for sure, but Nebraska had no business being in the Rose Bowl after the loss.
Colorado tripped out of the blocks that season, but was absolutely red hot by the time they got to this game. If they had played this way all season and got that number 2 ranking, they could have given Miami all they could handle in the National Championship game.
As a Husker fan, 2001 Colorado destroyed us in a way we still haven't recovered from yet, Chris Brown was unstoppable, I miss these Thanksgiving games, great memories, except this one haha GBR
Shay Hicks Competitive or not, I think the Pac-12 is a good move for Colo. Most of Colo's alumni base is in Cali, they are amongst like minded institutions and they don't have to kiss UT admin's feet every 5 min.
@@shayhicks7682 What was the mindset of Colorado fans after being up 35-3 and finding themselves only up 12 points (42-30) at the end of the third quarter? Were people in the stadium rooting for CU like "oh crap, not again?" As a Husker fan, I thought we were going to win the game and Colorado was going to implode - but obviously they had other ideas.
gynandroidhead the only time I remember getting a little nervous was in the third quarter and Nebraska had the ball at midfield down 42-30. We got Nebraska to punt though and then started to move the ball when the quarter ended. I felt we only needed one long drive and a touchdown to go up 19 for the lead to be safe, which we did pretty early in the quarter. I can’t really speak to the mood of the stadium as I watched the game from home with a watch party. My dad was pretty nervous though until the first interception crouch threw in the quarter. Even when we were up 35-3 he kept saying stuff like “it’s really early” and “their #1 for a reason”. I remember that very vividly. Overall though I feel like CU fans were confident, it just felt different than years past.
My brother and I watched this game at my house that year...I never laughed, cheered, jumped up & down and high-fived more in my life! Chris Brown & Bobby Purify rumbling up and down the field on them all day. Felt it some what made up for that game from hell on Halloween night in Lincoln back in 1992.
The wins over Nebraska & Texas in 2001 have to be the second & third best wins in Colorado Buffaloes football history. The biggest win is the 10-9 victory over Notre Dame in the 1991 Orange Bowl for the National Championship.
To put this game in perspective: Nebraska prior to this game from 1970 up through the Kansas State game two weeks before this: 330-58-5 Nebraska since this game: 137-94
The fact that Nebraska still made the BCS Championship game is mind boggling. CU went to the Big 12 Title and the computers still chose the Huskers lol. good thing Miami murdered them.
My sentiments exactly. Nebraska have had some highs such as making it to the Big 12 title games in 2006, 2009, and 2010 (despite losing all of them), and some lows (Bill Callahan era), but this loss, and the subsequent loss to Miami in the Rose Bowl left this program with a stain that they are still trying to clean.
erik3459 they've been dead since 1998 so I guess their ghost came and snatched Nebraska to the grave....I'm sure you saw what happened today in Lincoln...
I thought this season was a prime example of why a playoff is such a great thing now. The 2001 Colorado team tripped out of the gate, but by the end of the season was playing the best football in the country alongside Miami. That matchup would have been a great to see, and with a playoff, it would have been likely to happen.
Nebraska had no business playing for the National Championship that year. The Cornhuskers' got blasted by Colorado in the last game of the season, didn't even play in the Big 12 Championship game then proceeded the get their asses kicked by Miami (again ; ) in the Rose Bowl. Oy !
follow the $$$. Nebraska travels real well and the economics of the NCAA is about revenue. now it's about what the bookies in Vegas say what it is... via the crooked officials.
Oregon should have been in it being that they were undefeated that year. I loved this game because Nebraska was always giving it and this time Colorado stomped kicked their ass !! Go Buffs !!
@@blaster3763 ...I agree but it didn’t matter. Miami could have beaten the Russian Army that year. Their roster was busting at the seams with NFL talent.
I remember us Husker fans really thought CU was going to struggle to even get on the board in this game. The minute Purrify broke free for the first 6 we knew we were in huge trouble!
Nebraska and Oklahoma played in late October in a 1 vs 2 game. Nebraska won 20-10 (Eric Crouch's TD reception which won him the Heisman). Nebraska and Oklahoma were on track for a rematch in the Big 12 title game the following week, but both lost to their arch rivals (part of the chaos which allowed Nebraska to backslide their way into the title game).
The Buffs had a helluva team that year!! I was @ this game 50 yard line about 10 rows up!! By the end of the game our voices were all sore from singing the fight song!!
My dad is from Monte Vista and was soooo pissed when Nebraska STILL got the NC shot. An early loss to David Carr and Fresno State doomed the Buffs title shot
I feel like this was the day the entire direction the Nebraska Cornhuskers football program changed. Like the spirit of what it was and should be was sucked out of the program. What happened, and why did the entire program continue to go downhill.
All this is true, but we are here talking about the Colorado Buffaloes; not the Broncos, not the Avalanche, not the Rockies, heck, not even the MLS Rapids... we're talking about the Buffaloes man, the Buffaloes.
Christopher Brooks As a Nebraska fan, while this may be the obvious answer, I think it really didn't sink in for me until the next year against PSU. Colorado and Miami were at least good teams and Neb shouldn't have been in anyways (Oregon shoulda got the nod but no one was beating the Canes that year). Where it really sunk in for me was the 7-40 trouncing the next season at PSU. It's like we couldn't do anything in that game and PSU wasn't even that great.
I was living in Boulder, on University Hill, was not at the game didn't have to be. Could hear the Folsom Field cheering from my apartment. Probably the most dominating beatdown ever laid by an underdog ever. Best part was some Husker went to a strip club (The Bus Stop) after the game and got his ass kicked there, too.
You could tell that Nebraska supporters are still very butthurt about this game. So butthurt that they have to insult the current situation about Colorado. Why bring up the current situation for Colorado in a video from a 2001 football game? How would Nebraska fans feel if I went to a video from 1994 and all I talked about was 2001? Every school has their ups and downs. In 5 years, both programs may be back in the top 10. In 2001, both schools were good, both schools have a great history, especially in the 90s. In this current era of football, both are struggling, way below their expectations.
Nebraska didn't even deserve a shot at the National Championship game that year was ranked #4 in the poll and jumped in front of Oregon, Colorado (who won the Big XII and beat them head to head). Both of those teams would've gave Miami a better game than Nebraska.
Would have to agree, Big 10 now is a dumpster fire, same with ACC. Colorado has fallen off a cliff last 5-6 years. Pac 12 transition was bad move for them.
bsballerz19 Has nothing to do with the Pac12 move. CU is a MUCH better fit in the Pac than the Big XII. CU simply had out of date facilities and incompetent coaching. Facilities are now being upgraded in a big way and a new staff is in place. CU will be back, but it's a process that will take a couple years.
No doubt the facilities are upgrades. But sometimes a conference transitiion is a bad move to program. I wish CU gets better to where they were back in early 00's. They've made the transition to an up tempo offense and spread. We'll see
Must be nice to get blown out, lose your division, not even get to play for your conference championship, and then still get to play for the National Title.
CU is 1 of 3 teams in the PAC-12 to win a national title in football. The same region (Denver/Boulder) has won 2 Super Bowls, 2 Stanley Cups and has been to the World Series. All of this has happened since 1990.
I watched The Christmas Story. Colorado was Ralphie(no pun) and had to fear Nebraska (the bully) for decades. This was Ralphie whipping up on the bully after years of torture.
Assuming this is the SD that’s a mod on 247 Buffzone, you should try to re-record this with better audio (no idea how it sounded on original tv. Was hoping it wouldn’t sound so in-the-can)
Remember the last Big Ten Championship game, when Wisconsin put 70 points on Nebraska? I do. SUCK IT!! Remember when Georgia put 45 points on Nebraska in the bowl game? I do. So SUCK IT!! WOOOOOO!!!
I remember listening to this game. I couldn't believe my ears... was almost impossible to believe. A shitty CO team against the #1 NE. I guess the sun shines on a dog's ass every once in a while...
"This has to the best game Colorado has ever played since the new millennium started." . You have a problem with that comment. NEB has probably never suffered two back to back losses that bad in program history, esp being ranked as high as they were. CO win that good, or Neb way, way overrated?
Recall, Colorado's number #1 rusher was hurt. Brown and Purity we're 2 and 3 in the rotation. Colorado didn't even have to use the FB much, other than as a lead blocker. Also Graham had almost two touchdowns himself.
and Nebraska made it to the national championship game after this beat down can you believe that shit tells you how I messed up the system was then they also got beat down again by the University of Miami
