Hello friends , in this video we will be synthesising 1-nitronaphthalene from mothballs (naphthalene)
This video will be a little special because I will be giving a continuous walkthrough on a previous attempt of the same synthesis which turned out to be a failure.
This method was adapted from SM forums written by magpie , adapted from Vogel's textbook of practical organic chemistry
Chemicals required
1. Naphthalene : 20g
2. Glacial acetic acid : ~ 60ml
3. 95% Sulfuric acid : 25ml
4. 70% Nitric acid : 14ml
5. 90% Ethanol : ~ 170ml

Excellent video! I love the way you included information from the failed run as you reached each step in the successful run, and I appreciate you labeling it on screen which you were talking about at the time as well. A lot of videos claim to be educational and academic but they really fail to deliver any actual information that would be useful to the student or the chemist other than what the reaction looks like to perform. You sir have succeeded in making an actually academically and educationally valuable video, and I applaud you and thank you for it!

The nitration of Napthalene does work with 50% nitirc acid too. 100g naphtalene dissolved 300ml AcOH and added 100ml of HNO3 let it stand for 5 days and reaction is compled its an addapted methode mention in Urbanski.

funnily enough i have created nitro naphthalene before and i think i also posted a pic on your discord although i don't think the product i have i anywhere close to pure as i directly put naphthalene in hot nitrating mixture which melted it and formed a beautiful red layer. when it cooled down i collected it

have you ever tried nitration with aluminiumnitrate? you must only give it in your naphthalene glacial acetic acid mix and it will be nitrated withoud nox evolvment. the only thing i dont know if you can make dinitrate or if it only stops at mononitrate

I tried to synthesise it, but I don't find an adequate solvent. I reacted solid naphthalene directly with HNO3/H2SO4...

You'll need a solvent phase. It's soluble in many nonpolar solvents like benzene carbon disulfide Toluene etc

Or let the reaction heat up to 70C so the napthalin is molten . Thats how the industrie it does. But i think it evolve a lot of NO2

Yield was quite low. I guess this is due to recrystallization

Just a correction. Don't say "percentage", it's "percent". When saying what strength you're using, you say 95 "percent" ethanol, not 95 percentage ethanol. Percentage is used in a different sentence.
