This is the first in a series of videos outlining the plan to sail around the world in our little 27 foot sailboat. It will be followed with videos about the refit and then circumnavigation!
Nice to hear your history. 😊 And tumbs up for sharing the begining mistakes you made. All good sailors do. 😊 I am into Trimarans but love to follow the adventures of you and your family. 😊 Sailing solo is so awesome to.I think. But I wush you the best crew everytime. I hope we meet up somewhere.. 😊
Thank you so much for the comment! I’ve been sailing a long time now and I have a lot of miles offshore but I still make my share of mistakes! I would love to try out an offshore trip on a trimaran someday sounds like fun!
That's awesome man! I'm looking forward to following along and seeing your refit videos. I'm finishing up a 1.5 year refit on my '77 Pacific Dolphin 28. I plan in to be in the Sea of Cortez this fall. Hope we cross paths out there! ⛵
Hey Kristofer, Love the vid. The Gulf Stream is no joke! I went as part of a 4 man crew this spring on a Cabo Rico 34. The wind had backed around which was good but it hadn’t had time to settle out there. Good experience and I’d do it again but wow. It was a lot for my first offshore passage. To be honest though I couldn’t pay much attention to your video after you said that your wife just said yes. What a gal you must have! I’m looking forward to more videos Captain.
Nor'Sea 27, a capable small boat. In your research you may have have come across Al Lien who did a solo circumnavigation aboard Catalyst, another Nor'Sea 27. Keep in mind that Al was in his 60s at the time and also a recipient of a heart and kidney transplant. I met Al in Panama as we were both preparing to make the canal transit. Al in his boat and me in my Cape Dory 28, another fine small boat. Al eventually reached San Diego, Ca. and I completed my solo circumnavigation three years later, starting and ending in Florida. I know Al finished because I maintained HAM radio contact with him until he reached the California coast near LA. Good luck on your venture. I am preparing to finish up my second circumnavigation by leaving my current location in a month or so.
Thank you so much for the comment and the encouragement! I have never heard of Al and Catalyst! I will certainly look it up! Maybe you and I will have the good fortune to meet somewhere in some beautiful Anchorage. That would be really really cool!
Hi Christopher, just subscribed and already love the story. I got your name off a comment on Wildly Intrepid post. I am a retired 63 yr old who has dreams of living aboard, my wife unlike you think I am nuts. ?? Am I nuts to think I could do this. Very new, have a small 24’ day sailer now for small lake use. If nothing else I am looking forward to getting through your content, starting right from the beginning!!
Thank you for the encouraging comment! And of course the answer is yes you can do it! The hardest part is just getting started and making the sacrifice needed to just go for your dreams! I look forward to seeing you out here someday!
i was in a home for troubled boys- there was the first time I sailed. 30 years later bought my own Pearson Vanguard. I understand your decision not to continue once you had your daughter- a lot of kids never recovered from their lives. Out of thousands, there are only a few of us doing even marginally well. I only wish there was a better way to bring not only sailing, but the other things like the trades back to these boys (and girls)... it's absolutely amazing the effect it can have on the life of at least one. I carried that dream with me for a long time. I hope your spirit and your boat carries you far.
Thank you for the encouraging comment. It encourages me not only on this circumnavigation, but also in remembering all of those boys over the years. I must admit that I lost hope about most of them. Please continue watching as I sail around the world starting in August. You can sail vicariously around the world with me!
You were wise to get a smaller boat and one that could be trailered. Old boats almost always require total refitting and almost always a big pile of cash and time. Hope you have better luck than I did. I'm still working on my classic-plastic and it's been over 10 yrs now. The time for me to sail away, is gone with the wind. I'm lucking now to make it over to Catalina.
Just found your channel today. Great story on your first video, Love the honesty......Look forward to following the rest of your vids...Thank you for sharing ,Stephen, SV Sea Quest
Hi just wandered across your channel. I love the back story and look forward to your adventure. I am currently one of those with the magazines, books, RU-vid videos, and taken most of the ASA classes. I am hoping to begin a sailing adventure in two years if not sooner. I look forward to watching your adventures and sailing in a small boat. I am thinking of a boat between 27-35 feet myself. Happy sailing!
@Sailing Vessel Mig I'm from the midwest and just found your channel. I have recently discovered a love for sailing and I hope to buy a older boat here in the next few years. I've got 5 years until the youngest is 18 and I can start enjoying life instead of working like a dog all the time. I will definitely be buying a older sailboat and want to atleast start spending the winter months in warmer weather.
Hey Christopher! Small is beautiful. NorSea boats are awesome. Super story. I just bought a Pacific Seacraft Flicka-20. Twenty feet of little mighty can-do sailing vessel. Cant wait to take her out around the big Pacific and eventually to Baja-ja. Where are you now? I’m in Long Beach Harbor. Would be cool to meet and chat.!
Hi Christopher! I am up in Anacortes Washington. I almost bought a Little Flicka a few years ago. I love those Pacific Secrafts. Flicka is an amazing boat too but perhaps just a little bit too small for me. It took some convincing for my wife to even consider moving on to Mig at some point. There’s no way she would’ve moved onto a Flicka ever.
@@SV-Mig Understood. Not sure my wife is going to hang out much in this 20’ of tight elbow room. But I just had to have a Flicka!! Keep tabs and hope to meet as you pass So.CA. How much did you pay for Mig?
@@christopherstevenson9737 well the initial price was 20 K but… Well let’s just say if I had paid the amount that I have spent on Mig I could have bought a much bigger boat had I wanted one. That goes without saying though. The whole point here was to have the exact boat that I wanted for this circumnavigation.
Hi Kristopher! Welcome from Brookings Oregon. We are also refitting an older boat- a 39 ft Down East cutter and we are also going to join the Baha-Haha next summer. We didn’t make it this year- much more to do getting Dulcinea ready for world sailing. If it works out we would love to buddy boat down to Mexico with you. Keep in contact and maybe we will see you next summer- Tilting With The Wind.
That sounds great! I’m considering a different route at this point I’m thinking I will leave in the spring and sail to Hawaii and then on to Fiji from there. But as we know in refitting boats it really isn’t our schedule that matters it’s the boat! So there’s still a chance I will be heading down to Mexico next fall you never know!
We are most likely going to sail around the Sea of Cortez for a year then either head to South Pacfic or on to and thru Panama Canal to Bahamas. Depends a lot on state of Mexico- so there is a possibility that we may also skip Mexico and head off to Hawaii. It’s rough sailing around and between the islands!
Hi Kristofer. Although I´w been sailing with friends some I´m not a sailing person, but you got med hocked. :) Will be following along on your U-tube chanel. /David, Mölndal, Sweden.
Very cool little yacht…great bones!…very solid build and design…I like your approach towards simplicity …i hope that e motor works out for you…im still skeptical about mixing salt water and electronics , but the tech has come a long way…it sure would be nice to be able to motor in quiet odorless motion…but I don’t think you even really need a motor at all for most cruising you’ll be doing…im a true purist at heart, but a small gas motor and bracket that can also power a dingy might be a good idea… i like your sail plan idea…should give you a very versatile sail config for many conditions… I had an island packet 27 after I lost my vagabond 42 in Katrina…bought it as daysailer / weekender and hated it…had no soul…sailed like a pig..but your 27 looks like a real contender for a comfortable performance circumnavigation … I’ve subscribed to follow your progress…hats off to you brother…
Thank you very much for the comment and the encouragement! I delivered one of those little island packets from Boston to Miami. They definitely are a little pigs but they are tough little pigs. The boat wasn’t nearly as big of an issue on that delivery as were the seasick owner and his two seasick Weimaraner dogs! But that’s a story for another time ha ha ha
At the time I made that video my settee area was all torn apart so I could cut out the foam for the new cushions. You are the first person to ask why I was sitting on the battery box! Good catch! Thank you for subscribing!
