Barn finds in suburban Detroit? Tom Cotter managed to find some in an “automotive Disneyland:” from a 1914 Princess and an aluminum-bodied, air-cooled 1920 Franklin to a one-owner (who still owns it) 1956 Ford Crown Victoria. The most impressive find of the show? Discovered in a storage unit, is a one-of-one factory hot rod station wagon, authorized by then-Ford president Lee Iacocca himself. Too bad this one’s already found a new home...

Now, folks. THAT'S how you keep a yard full of cars. The grass is still cut/weed-eat, and everything. Just because one has a little bit of "inventory" out back, doesn't mean there has to be weeds up to your ass, and snakes around your ankles. Amazingly organized. Alex, is a guy that's after my own heart, AND trying to outdo my ADHD. Good man. Bravo!!!

Did I say anything about WHEN he might've cleaned it up? It's clean. That's what I was talking about. Not WHEN he cleaned it up. Gee whiz, man. Besides, they ask these people in these towns with these cars maybe 24 hours in advance, with the VERY rare exception of calling a tip ahead of time. Man, some people...... Nice try though, smarty pants.

Seeing the 67 wagon was definitely a treat. I remember as a kid sitting in the very back of our 68 wagon which had all the same features minus the 4 speed and 428. It had a 352 auto. Many miles pulling a fold down camper through the Rocky and Teton mountains.

He is not dead so it not YET is actually correct and he can have any intention he wants. If he didn't buy that car and restored it to the way it is, it would have gone to the crushers as back in the day these cars were not loved, much like the iconic Mustangs, VW Beetles and popular cars of today once they are slightly old but still common and not special. Also, did you want him to say "It never will"? Please if you have nothing good to say, keep it to yourself.

WE HAD THAT WAGON!!!...minus the 4 speed...same avocado color, green interior...Sometime in the late 70's my parents called from LAX and said they had left their tickets (to Hawaii) on their dresser. I grabbed the tickets, took the Country Squire and went screaming up the 405 'averaging' 90mph. Made it from OC to LAX with time to spare. What a BEAST!

I learned years ago not to correct spelling... lost a very beautiful girlfriend who was very sweet to write to me while I was off studying at UCLA. Later, wife who really couldn't spell but uses her companies computers to do that for her, that's what IBM does, now she just has 'the little people' do that for her. and her bonuses exceed my EE/CS yearly$ (which my manager complained was a lot more than his salary so after getting screwed on raises because he was a tripple-dipper (Aerospace+AirForce+reserves+CoPayw/reservePay) was still making less than me! ...and this is my fault!? Best manager I ever had was a woman who admitted I made less than her but had more skills (though SHE REALLY WAS A SKILLED PROGRAMMER AS WELL!). DIFFERENCE WAS SHE KNEW WHAT IT TOOK TO OBTAIN THOSE SKILLS IN ONE PERSON AND COMPENSATED ME FOR IT! P.O.S. EX-MIL COULDN'T DO IT, DIDN'T WANT TO LEARN TO DO IT, ETC. ...AND DIDN'T HAVE TO BECAUSE HIS AWARDING MULTI-YEAR CONTRACT TO US GOT HIM A MGR JOB!

I graduated high school in 67. I have ridden in my share of Country Squires. It looks common, but to me two things stand out, the power windows and the vent windows. All the wagons that I rode in had crank windows, until 73. All these features are wonderful and especially that rear door.

That 1967 Ford Country Squire with a 428 cubic inch engine and a 4 speed manual transmission is very unique one of a kind. Most of these Ford Station Wagons came with a 3 speed automatic transmission, and some came with a 3 speed column shift, but a 4 speed manual floor shift in a Ford Station Wagon is unique.

WOW...,an original 4 speed 428 wagon. No manufacturers, today, will actually build a car the way...YOU....want it, but back in those years cars were so much more interesting. An example was a performance slant 6, 4 barrel carb Valiant that performed like a small V8, I know, because I drove one and instantly loved it. Pay for an inexperienced teenager in the mid 60's put anything new out of my reach though, plus I was due to be drafted. The car that I tried desperately to buy, though, was a brand new, fire engine red, 383 4 speed, '66 Plymouth Satellite, hard top. The car was absolutely stunning. Sadly, it never happened. Thanks for the memories! 😊.

My Mom had a fairly unique '68 Country Squire. According to the story, my Dad was fairly well-known at the FMC. His dad was an engineer at Ford Canada and he got my dad in the apprenticeship program at Ford after Dad came back from WWII. Dad went around and worked at many shops in the northeast US and Ontario as a journeyman, then worked for Ford as a master mechanic. In '68, one of the higher-ups at Ford Canada ordered a hot-rod Country Squire for his wife and she didn't like it, so Dad got it from Ford at cost. It had the 428 and bucket front seats as well, but it was an automatic. It also had every damn option possible, much like the '67 shown here. It was even the same awful green, but the interior was also green. We drove out west to AZ for summer vacation in it in '68 and again in '69 to move here permanently. Dad foolishly lost the thing after taking out a loan against it and my Mom was pissed off at him for years. One day in the mid-80's, I was driving around in Tucson with my Mom and we spotted the car for sale on a corner lot. I opened the hood and somebody had swapped in a 302 at some point. Mom instantly lost interest in trying to get it back. Both my parents were gearheads and that 302 just wasn't right.

Checking VINs is important! I had a 58 Edsel Pacer w orig 361ci engine that I swapped out with a 352 I'd rebuilt so I could have time to restore while still driving Edsel... eventually gave to neighbor kid who used to come over and 'help' me by dropping wrenches on me as I asked for them (who 'credited' me with his interest and family paid for his mechanics training ... all while I (at UCLA Physics/Engineering) encouraged him... he did that, got on a job with tan LA/CA city (was countries largest -population- at one point) and was really tall... so promotions got him up there! So often the worhless 'what the 'f' can we do with this shiite" get the management position, but in his case they got the winner! Always nice to see the most qualified and deserving fellow get it... and don't give me the ;'nerd can't manage' BS, it's a cop-out for bad management to place their "suck ups" in power as they also had been! yeah... bitter but happily retired...

Audio problems with your guests have been happening since the first show ( I think) I have a super hard time hearing anything they are saying. It may not be a problem for you folks producing this show, but it sure would make it look a bit more professional.

My great grandfather and Grand father between them owned a Chevrolet dealership for 50 years. My grandfather really wanted a corvette in 1957 when Chevrolet introduced the 283 horse 283. He was not able to justify the purchase since he had a wife and kids. He opted for the next best thing and ordered a 1957 Chevrolet wagon but had it special ordered with the new fuel injected 283. My mother was twelve at the time and her memory of this car were very clear. The car was sort of a running family story because grandpa was able to bust a few sports cars asses in this wagon. My mother said one night in particular then were returning from a trip to the ice cream parlor and a guy in a Jag pulled alongside. He saw the crossed flags with fuel injection underneath and scoffed at my grandfather. He lost the next three "stoplight" drags and finally asked ,"What the hell have you done to that thing?' As far as I can tell this car predates all the COPO cars I've read about. It was definitely a one off. I'm sure my family's owning a dealership helped get the car. Grandpa only kept it one year because mechanical fuel injection at that time required a lot of tinkering.

Along the lines of that hot rod wagon, I often wondered what happened to a Chevy Malibu wagon here in CT that was purchased by a teacher in our high school, who just happened to have the same idea. He wanted a Corvette but the old lady was expecting so he bought the wagon with Corvette driveline. Recalling it was a 69 with a 327, a 4 speed, posi rear, dual exhaust, and rally wheels. Never saw another one like it. For all I know he's still got it and retired down south someplace.

One of the freedoms kids don’t have today on long family trips in the station wagon, sitting in the front seat a bit, back seat a bit, and the “way back” with the facing or rear facing seats. And no need to stop to change spots, no seat belts so mom and the kids climbed back and forth as dad said “not much further.”

I remember reading about this wagon in a late 90's issue of Mustangs & Fords magazine. They said then that the original owner had written a letter to Ford asking to build this car, and they had initially denied the request. But, after being persistent and writing a second or third letter, Iacocca finally agreed to build it for the man. It surprised me to find this video in my suggestions, and I'm very pleased to see it's surviving very well to this day. I can't seem to recall what condition it was in at the time of the "Rare Finds" write up 20 years ago. Now I'm curious as to whether or not I still have that issue. Time for a storage unit hunt.

A lot of those late 60's Country Squires had 390's in them, especially if the owner had a boat or camper, but a 4 speed, nah that was different. The difference between a 390 and a 428 wasn't that big of a deal. Torque was great on both of them. Gas mileage was lower on the 428, so the 390 made more sense. No one would have believed in 67 that they would still be on the road in 2020 !!!!!

Yea! The first car I ever drove in the road with a license was a car my dad ordered new. Back in the sixties my dad always had big powerful cars. I remember a beautiful 1964 Lincoln Continental 4dr. He traded that quickly cause it was a lemon. He traded it for a 1964, Chrysler Imperial Crown Coupe, that had a clear rectangular steering wheel push button drive. It was a light met. Blue, with a black vinyl top and light blue leather interior. But the main thing I remember is that the car had a 413, Dual Quad Wedge engine !!! With positrac! That the car could blow off the GTO and 68 Charger a cousin had! But as the family grew he had to get a beach wagon. So he ordered a Chrysler New Yorker Town&Country, that he ordered special with a 440 Super Commando engine , with a 4brl carb and dual exhaust. I remember the exhaust manifolds were cast iron, but they came up and were curved up along the valve covers! Plus the car had hd brakes with disk in front and a factory tow package that came with 3:73 rear end. That was the first car I ever drove with a license like I wrote above! I could get that car on a new hyw in R. I. back in the early /mid 70's to very high speeds. I'm not sure if the exact speed cause I was never caught. But the speedometer was a rectangular box right in front of the driver, that had a blank space about 1/4", then had a square clock, I had the car going sooo fast, the speedometer needle went right passed 120, through to the click to 3oclock!!!! The engine was screaming and the doors felt and sounded like the wind was going to rear them open with a loud sucking sound! I know I know that was CRAZY YOUTh. But here by The Grace of God go I!!! Live and learn!!!! But to say the least, I have an affinity to the old beach wagons!!! I had a really nice 1969 Pontiac LeMans wagon, no wood grain so I did not call it a beach wagon, this was in 1973,, so the car had been well cared for and was in great condition. I bought it off a family man that just had to by a Suburban for his family and tow his boat! But because he had always had boat that Pontiac wagon I bought off him he had ordered with a 350 4brl dual exhaust with a Turbo 350 transmission and factory tow package that came with better gearing and posi. I was hit by a drunk driver and was able to have a new front clip replaced, I was able to bribe (my cousin) at the body shop to replace it with a front clip I found from a 1969 GTO! I had found! So to make a long story a little shorter, I had the only GTO wagon around! I drove it hard for about 5 years, yea I had hd coil springs in front with the best hd load master coil springs and shocks in the rear! So it has extra ground clearance with as big tires I could get! I had a blast with that wagon! When I showed it to the guy I bought it off of he lived it! I was able to sell it for more than I paid for it 5 years after and about 60k miles!!! I ended up buying my first SUV a new International Scout II ! I kinda wish I still had that wagon!!

My dad brought home a new 1970 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser. We had it for ten years before we had to sell it. I'll tell you, it was the base model...white with the fake "woody" sides and the chrome tin pan hub caps. Everything was as plain as could be, but it could move! Automatic on the column, but if you tromped the gas, you'd get whiplash. Quite the car. The only drawback was all that glass would heat the Naugahyde seats up to 1200 degrees, and sitting on those in shorts? Ouch.

Awesome! I'm a huge fan of the Country Squire and the '67 has always been one of my favorites, at least the exterior. I never liked the dash and steering wheel redesign for '67 I've always dreamed of the 428 and 4-speed combo as well! I always assumed they were rare (as the CS was very rarely optioned with a manual anyways after the 50s) but never realized there was only one. By the way I'm fairly sure that the 3 way electric window "magic tailgate" was standard on all Ford Wagons by that time and of course the wood paneling was standard on every Country Squire ever made, not an option as he seems to imply.

Someone I knew bought a 390 4 speed 64 Galaxie Ranch wagon. It had a bench seat four speed with phoney wood sides, a roof rack, 3rd seat, etc.

That red and white Ford is not a 56 but a 55. The front is different but the one unique thing about that car is the round radio. Besides that those are some interesting finds.

I am surprised how back then in the Muscle Car Era, ordering a 428 Ford Wagon didn't get U a dual exhaust? In most part, the same restrictive design the others had. I doubt the owner's wife in 1967 wanted a manual shift wagon, there must've been more compromise. LoL!

that wagon is awsome! other then minor rust on the doors and in some other places its is solid! even still has the woodgrain sides roof rack, dam if i had the money i'd buy it mostly to 2 twings, re-pair the rust and clean it up maybe put new woodgrain on the side but other then that leave it as is, i'm sooooooo glad i subbed this channel a while ago

On that 1967 Ford wagon, the (albeit fake) wood siding still appears in fairly good shape, which is rare. Usually, it is more faded than that. Although that rust needs to be addressed (especially the cancer on the right rear door), to keep it from getting worse. But otherwise, in my opinion, keep it original! I would patina the paint, provided that is THEE original paint. Otherwise, I would repaint it the same original color. That is one heavenacious barn find! I hope the new owner does righteousness to it. Also, that '55 Ford Crown Vic that is still a one owner car?! That is unheard of! And he is willing to let it go for $20,000? Dude, even if it wasn't running(outside of merely needing a battery), that might be a steal! And that '55 T-bird is nothing to sneeze at either (except for the barn find long term storage dust). And $3,000 apiece for those three '56 Lincoln Premieres? Granted, they may not be the most desirable of all the 1950's ancientmobiles, but the day will come when ANYTHING that is restorable from the 1950's will be worth a mint. Many years from now, when automotive historians can pass more objective judgment upon 20th Century cars, I believe that they will still agree that the cars of the 1950's are the most desirable, by both the trailer queen frame-off-ers, and the "driver" "frame-on-ers".

Wow, back in 1966 my dad bought almost same car but it was a 428 Mercury Monterey wood panel station wagon had all the same features as that Ford wagon but was automatic. I guess he thought the Mercury had more status than Ford. lol
