The Lamborghini Countach is a super car icon. Everyone had a poster of the Futuristic Lamborghini countach on there wall in the 80s. Making an appearance in movies like cannonball run and wolf of wallstreet, the Lamborghini Countach with its exaggerated and in your face styling plus an unmistakable V12 rumble it remains an icon to this day.
This Lamborghini Countach lp400 S was one of 3 produced from the factory with the rear reflector that stretches the width of the car. it is also one of 85 series three Countach.
introduced in 1978 the Countach LP400 S sported large fender extensions and 345/35R15 rear tires, the biggest tire on a production car of that time. it also had an optional wing, that most people opted for, even though it decreased the performance of the car.

@TheRealCoyote

@@roverwaters3875 No. It was specifically made so it would not give downforce because Countach, like many cars of that era, already suffer from front end lift. I don't care about folklore or some proud owner who claims to feel it makes a difference. Lamborghini themselves say it was only made due to requests from clients after Cannon Ball movie and they did not want downforce. ( On that car they added the wings just to make it even wilder looking). This information has been verified by Harry Metcalf and Iain Tyrell amongst others so I'm inclined to believe them. But Lamborghini wanted to sell cars, so they gave in and added a wing that basically just looks cool and makes the car little bit slower (for those who wanted it).
@roverwaters3875
@roverwaters3875 2 года назад
@@TheRealCoyote lol Countach at high speeds suffers from TOO MUCH downforce so the wing counteracts that. You need to inform yourself better Harry Metcalf and Iain Tyrell are not test drivers. Magnificent. I am 59. When I was in college in Bloomington Indiana back in early 80s at Indiana University (IU), I could not even afford a Car and Driver magazine. I go to library and borrow the library Car and Driver magazine and read about this car sitting on the floor middle of book aisles and dream. What a magnificent vehicle and great great video. Mamma Mia. Many year later, I love cars and own beautiful Vettes and Mustangs, but this is where it all started.

Yes, the wing. I know it divides opinion but let's not pretend it's anything other than a styling exercise. It has no effect on stability and is designed to be aerodynamically neutral to avoid moving the centre of pressure rearwards. There is therefore no downforce, just as well if you look at what it's screwed to. It does however add a fair bit of drag so if you're into bar room bragging rights you should know it takes about 15 mph off the top speed. Thank you for highlighting this particular car. I'd never before seen even a picture of the 3 with the full-width reflector. Good point on the fuel tanks. I've never driven a 400S but on checking I see it does not have a balance pipe between the tanks so if one runs empty the fuel pumps will start sucking air. They did change that for later cars! This car looks really well presented. I hope its new owner also puts some good miles on it!
@roverwaters3875
@roverwaters3875 3 года назад
stating your opinions and guesses doesn't make you right... The wing helped with stability over 200km/h speeds. Also it helped neutralize the inherent massive downforce of the front end at those high speeds, making the car steering possible at high speeds. At over 200km/h with no wing you can't move the steering wheel because of the high front downforce. You should read some road test from the period, from people who actually drove the cars to their limits.
@timgosling6189
@timgosling6189 3 года назад
@@roverwaters3875 Just going by Peter Dron, and his excellent book on the Countach, which also includes several period road tests. The give-away about the wing is that it wasn't attached to the car's frame. If it actually developed serious downforce it would buckle the boot lid.
@roverwaters3875
@roverwaters3875 3 года назад
@@timgosling6189 nobody said anything about the wing creating downforce. key words are "stability" and "air brake" effect, which takes some of the heavy load from front tires.
@timgosling6189
@timgosling6189 3 года назад
@@roverwaters3875 I understand what you say, but I have never heard of this angle from any other source, including those who have taken them to their top speed. I have a quote from Piero Martini who demonstrated his 5000QV to 'Fast Lane' magazine for an article they wrote in Sep 1986. They took the car to approximately 195 mph over a measured kilometre and no handling problems were apparant. Asked why his car didn't have the wing Pierluigi described it as 'silly'.

It was the most outrageous car to ever exist. They get bashed by automotive journalists but I've talked to owners before and they refute just about all of their claims. Mechanically they were pretty solid. The switches were sourced by Fiat and they weren't that good but the engine and transmission were durable. I've seen three of them in my life and they give you a high that defies words.

If we would be really picky ... 1. = The 1971 Geneva Countach prototype LP500, with a "steel plate" chassis (like the Urraco/Silhouette/Jalpa, Jarama, Espada). Also the Prototype had a "steel" body. 2.1. = The 1974 Countach LP400 Periscope. Now with a steel "tube frame" and "aluminium" body panels. 2.2. = The 1975 three "Walter Wolf" LP400, with wide body & huge rear wing. 3.1.1. = The 1978 LP400S "low roof & wide body" - inspired by the W.Wolf versions - and with "Bravo" wheels, a.k.a. "Series #1" (with small Stewart-Warner dashboard gauges). 3.1.2. = From 1979, still a "Series #1" with Bravo wheels, but now with bigger dashboard gauges. 3.2. = The 1979/1980 LP400S "Series #2", now with concave wheels (instead of the Bravo wheels from the series #1). 3.3. = The 1980 LP400S "Series #3", now with a "high roof" and modified ride-hight and reduced HP. 4.1. = The 1982 LP500S (or 5000S), looks like a LP400S Series #3 but with a bigger engine and more HP and upgraded suspension geometry. 4.2. = The 1984-1987 Countach LP5000S "RESTYLING PROTOTYPE" with significant changes done by Giulio Alfieri. The idea started in 1984 as "Project L150" and during 1987 this car was developed and finished/completed under Patrick Mimran himself! At the right and left sides the original NACA ducts were replaced with large side grilles, mounted in enlarged flat rear wings (like on a Porsche 935). The side windows now were 1-piece instead of the normal 2-pieces. 5.1. = The 1985 LP5000 QV "Euro", now with 4 valves per each cylinder and with six Weber double-carburetors "on top" (instead on side). 5.2. = The QV "US-version", the on top carburetors were replaced with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system. 6. = The 1987 Countach Evoluzione a.k.a. EVO, a prototype and testbed with carbon fiber frame and aluminium/carbon body panels and more HP and a re-designed suspension geometry. 7.1. = The QV "88 1/2", with side skirts, and with a re-designed dash board top (air outlets) and a more modern digital aircon controll unit. 7.2. = The 88 1/2 "USA" with fuel injection. 8.1. = The 1988/89 Countach 25th Anniversary "Euro", with heavily modified body style by Pagani. 8.2. = The 25th Anniversary "USA", with fuel injection instead of carburetors. If we would count each of these Countach variations as a "model", we would get 16 (!) different Countachs! (The unique non-official US-american "Injection Prototype" based on a LP5000S not included) @Colleen - I ❤ your videos. 👍 When it comes to "car taste" you're an "old dog" 😉🙂

Nope, the wing did not help stability at high speeds. The wing made the front end light and affected the steering. The wing was only ever a sales gimmick because buyers in the USA wanted the wing. It was not fitted in the factory, but at a building just down the road from the factory.

Like many people I've been a Countach fan for decades, yet I never knew about the dual gas tanks that provide fuel at the same time! Everything new I learn about these cars just makes them so much more ludicrous.

There is a hose that connects the 2 tanks. You don't need to fill each separately.

Actually the wing did NOT help with stability, it was only for looks and slowed the car down slightly, with its increased drag. Better research needed here.

shut up, she is right you better do some better research, meaning reading the period road tests in car magazines

Shes definitely rare herself. these cars from what ive seen have been known to bring girls to tears because of how uncomfortable they are.

Everyone had a poster of the Futuristic Lamborghini countach on THEIR wall in the 80s.

I’ve always wanted to know more about the LP400 S Series 3 cars, there’s not much on them. Never seen ‘full reflector’ rear end on a Countach before.

I am curious to know which is more fun and which is easier to live with; a Countach or a Pantera, both of the early 80s vintage. I currently own two DeLoreans and recently test drove a 1988 Lotus Esprit, and I can confirm that the DeLorean has a more comfortable interior volume for long trips and is easier to get into and out of than the Lotus Esprit. The Lotus seat was more comfortable than the DeLorean seat, but I prefer to recline more than the Lotus allows and was too "upright" in the Lotus for my comfort. I do long road trips, 1,000+ miles in just a few days.

Fun I suppose is subjective. For me you can't beat a rumbling V12. But ease (and cost) or maintenance... no contest. V12s are very expensive to run! I recall at some point if you needed to replace Lamborgini V12 crankshaft it was something like 20000£. Distributors are also super expensive. Anything engine related really.
