The Sooners, ranked #1 in the country, slug it out with the Longhorns at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas in the 1987 version of the Red River Rivalry. This game, close at the half, 13-6, would end in an Oklahoma rout, 44-9. Barry Switzer's option game led by quarterbacks Jamelle Holieway and Charles Thompson would outrun Texas all day.

Boy, do I miss the exciting triple option. I get so tired of today's all passing, all day in today's college football. Bring back the triple option and all those big plays!

Yeah, idk I remember a lot of games like OU Nebraska 1985. Just fumble fumble fumble. No ability to complete a forward pass. I'm old school on most things but this I'm mixed on I suppose! Definitely, would like to see more of it back

@@theSparkyWatts I believe Keith Jackson caught a long TD pass in that '85 contest..

@@LarryRickenbacker I meant 86 where there was 15 fumbles 4 for turnovers and 2 interceptions thrown. I realize passes were completed but 50% was a good thing. I definitely prefer a balance and miss option. Us older guys are probably stuck with spread mentality for awhile

Watching this game reminds me of a quote from former Texas coach, Darrell Royal. When asked why his teams didn’t pass more, Royal replied, “because when you throw the football, there are three things that can happen, and two of them are bad”.

No Bosworth this year. As Barry told him after that Orange Bowl stunt after the 86 season, "Brian, you need to decide where you're going to play next year, because it's not going to be here."

As I’ve gotten older, and as many OU games I’ve seen over the years, it seems to me that the OU teams in the 70s and 80s were more SOLID and STABLE. Am I imagining things? Or maybe those teams were more smash mouth.🤔

LEE UR CORRECT,SOONERS BACK IN THE 70S AND 80S WERE MORE PHYSICAL AND SOLID,ESPECIALLY ON DEFENSE!

And more turnover prone. People freak out today if OU qb has 10 turnovers on season. Even in 2000 all turnovers. Josh heupel had 20 pass tds and 20 turnovers

If it wasn't for Miami OU would've had. 3 titles instead of the one. Miami was bigger and faster. They had a great run from 85-88.

OU defense had more interceptions in this game than they normally get in a season anymore. And considering how much more pass happy today's game is (more pass attempts mean more opportunity for interception) just goes to show you either how good this defense was in 87 or how bad they are now.

87' Sooners were the best team in college football history! Go look up the stats, they were insane! First in every team defensive and team offensive stats (except passing of course).

I luved how at 5.58 Lydell Carr scored on that long run while Earl Campbell was getting interviewed. That was a great team.I really believe had Hall Fame QB Troy Aikman had not got hurt in 1985 OU would have beat Miami all 3 yrs 85-87.

If Holieway doesn't get injured, I think these Sooners beat Miami. No disrespect to Thompson at all, but he was a freshman. I think the more experience could have made a difference. Still one of the best teams of all time anyway. BOOMER SOONER!!
@johnmanning4097
@johnmanning4097 7 лет назад
tmckinsey79 I fully agree with you Holieway had more experience a better passer and was strong as an ox he could have broke tackles that would gave Oklahoma that extra yard against a very strong Miami defense back then.

Charles Thompson was faster and quicker than Jamelle Holieway but Holieway was a better wishbone quarterback overall if he had not got hurt his junior year they possibly could have beat Miami in the Orange Bowl in 1988 for the national championship
