I always saw the half-visible NIN logo on the cover of the album being representation of the protagonist’s emotional state: somewhat damaged, frail and traumatized. Afraid of exposing himself to the outside world and being vulnerable again out of fear of being hurt and reliving all the pain all over again. Thus he is hiding inside of his shell (the bottom photograph is a photo of the inside of a sea shell) but peaking out just a little bit, because there is a little bit of hope left.
This album has been my saviour during my darkest times, and continues to be as such . It’s been therapeutic for me to say the very least. I’ve been listening to it since the day it came out.
I remember standing in line on a rainy day in Sam Goody the first day this album came out. This album and Marilyn Manson's Mechanical Animals were my escapes during the worst of times and some of the best :)
It’s crazy the production in nine inch nails early albums broke so many ‘rules’ at the time yet now the techniques used in this and the downward spiral and this are fairly embraced.
this whole thing, and Ghosts, is incredibly and unfortunately far ahead of its time. "The Fragile" is about as close to a perfect album that I can think of. that little ascending chromatic line that ties it together is something I hear in my sleep.
@@blessthismessss The transformation of that ascending chromatic motif that you hear in this track, and all over the album, into the jazzy, dreamy bass lick in "La Mer" is just incredible. It's just really, really good writing.

The Album of my senior year in high school. Remember buying it with three of my friends and sitting in the car on a beautiful fall day. We were all jamming with that opening track!!! Loved it!!! Memories.
Watching this album be composed & put together in a studio would've been mind blowing. When this came out I'd recently started stuffing around with a music composing program, & listening to this now.. you can hear & feel the genius in every single intentional note, sound & drum beat. Its a fucking symphony.

I first heard this album when I was 16, and I just leaned into the brilliance of these songs right away, how densely layered they are. It's an album that never gets old. It can always be deconstructed and analyzed in different ways.
the ultimate showdown lol. They actually made a song together I don't remember what its called though. Trent did the backup vocals on a Puscifer song... It was originally Tapeworm, the band they both started... guess it didn't work out. They're both different sides of the coin, but respectable lol
