i have a few rules that helped me: 1. most people are happy when they simply get a response, they do not care tbout your grammar!! 2. if you miss a word- use an other one or say it in a different way... 3. use gap-fillers! like: you see?, you know? dont tell me...., tell me...., well......, exactly, certainly, absolutely, 4. use short sentences and phrases! we austrians often speak in long sentences, and full sentences, natives dont do that, they use short phrases or sentences. we say (in german): Yes sure, that sounds good! how do you do? native english: Sure, sounds good! how's it goin'? 5. think english! do not translate in your mind- stop learning words in your first language and then translate, it is useless, just learn the word and the meaning, all in english!!!

Absolutely; any sort of translation kills one's language learning! It's acceptable to know five hundred words with translation, for example; but these words have to be super basic. In my book, they really help to learn next without any translation!

1) I think the most challenging thing for me is to speak correctly. Yeah, I'm not afraid of mistakes but sometimes I get stuck and my speech crashes :) 2) My plan: - I'm gonna learn and practice the rules that I'm struggling with (As a rule It's common tenses) - I don't want to expand my vocabulary I just want to use the words and phrases I've already known but don't use

You got me in tears when you said “You don’t need to sound like a native. You need to sound like yourself.” I still remember when I started learning English at a late age (16). I’d ask my English native-speaking friends about the sound of my accent. One of them answered me, “You sound like Larry.” At this time, I never understood what they actually meant; I thought they were acting nice and did not want me to feel down. Over the course of the years, however, I learned to embrace my accent since there isn’t much I could do to sound like James Franco. I trained my brain into believing that my accent represents my culture. This approach has given me so much confidence and now I speak with so much freedom. Thanks for making these helpful videos. Happy New Year! :)

@@fseenamber7901 Since I'm currently living in the US, I'm constantly surrounded by people who only speak English. Back in the days, when I first started learning the language, I had to make huge sacrifices as a teenager. Instead of going to the movies to hang out with my friends, I would go to the library to read English-written books and sit with a dictionary to define unknown words. READING really helped me -and still does- to acquire a broader vocabulary. Nowadays, some friends wouldn't even believe that English is actually my third language. I guess, me choosing sophisticated words while speaking with confidence is what gives them that impression of me. Good luck!

1. To me public speaking in english actually hold me back, because it’s my second language and I don’t speak fluently as others. And I believe that results to the lack of confidence. 2. Cover myself surrounded with english environment, take the opportunity to speak and communicate to improve, learn the necessary topic in english that required in my work life. 3. Target to aims the best way to get fluent, and don’t because of my bad english affect my career path due to a bad communication skill. And finally, learn to make mistake is fine!

Today I tried a speaking evaluation with a teacher. This was actually for TOEFL. I'm required to get 26+ score and I was expecting more technical feedback. She said that I needed to practice intonation, and I have not idea where to start. After that, she gave me examples and she sounded really immature talking like the cast from "Mean girls". I was shocked. She suggested to incorporate words like "kinda" so I can sound more fluent. I don't want to sound superficial. I do agree that intonation and accent reduction would add value to my speaking and my score but I don't see the point to exaggerate that much. I'm a professional and I want to sound professional. Your English is so perfect and what I like the most is that it sounds normal and natural, not fake.

Yeah, we will make a lot of mistakes untill we reach the goal. But Hadar is right when said that we need to try to speak with someone. We need to try to speak even if we don't feel confident with that. Today wrote all what Hadar said, every word and after that I read aloud few times and after that I watched video 5-6 times. First with subtitle and without subtitle. It seems that's better after that. But I need to do that every day with different videos. If we do that every day it will be better and better I'm sure of that.

I understand that because English is a 2nd language to me as well. However, like others mentioned already, native speakers don't really care that much even if you make a lot of mistakes. When I had that problem in the start, if I really encountered some nasty people who laughed at my speaking skill, I simply said to them "English is not my mother tongue, I actually have more rights than you do when it comes to making mistakes. Let's hear you speak my language!" Now I am a fluent English speaker, though I still makes tiny mistakes often as many native speakers would do in reality(mostly its a long term habit thing, at least I know what my mistakes are when I make them). I can even argue with the natives with quick responses. LMAO! Hope that helps.

So true! I just remembered when I was living in Argentina and I had one and only goal: speaking Spanish like a native speaker. And it was very frustrating everytime being asked where I was from. The more I thought about it, the worst my pronunciation got. When I finally realized I would never speak like a native speaker, it got much easier to communicate and interact with people. This also helped me to show to people the topics of language I was struggling with and they would help me with that. Now, trying to become a good English speaker, I find myself repeating that story: my worst problem is still the confidence, because of the fear of making mistakes and sounding stupid.

Im from Argentina and i have to say, you had a very difficult task trying to speak as a native speaker. Just because our accent is very, i dont know, peculiar? 😅 Anyway, i was living in new zealand and the same happened to me, the more i wanted to speak as a kiwi, the more weird my accent became. So i think we must embrace out pronunciation (and also grammar mistakes) and just let it flow. As long as we are capable to communicate, i think is good enough.

1. Where do I struggle the most? -Confidence. For years, most of the people who know or knew me tends to think that I’m very good with everything I put myself into, and one of them is speaking English. Truth is, I’m insecure with how I pronounce, construct, and speak the language . It always felt like everyone’s judging me and thinking that I’m not really good with it or that I can never do it. I was surrounded with people who’s born speaking this language and everytime I want to talk and share my ideas and stories, my tongue gets tied up then I mispronounced the words and lose my confidence. 2. My game plan -I’ll go back to the basics. I thought learning and expanding my vocabulary will help me become good with constructing sentences but I became more confused and I dont know where to put some words. 3. I will go back to the very beginning. I will start from there until I mastered it. There’s no room for procrastination now.❤

Nice to meet you Hadar you're excellent. I'm an English and Spanish Teacher from Venezuela and your advice had helped me a lot. We can speak English without pretending to sound like native people and another truth is that in XXI century we don't have to spend years in an English speaking country to improve our skills, we have the technology to reach our goals.

Hello Haddar, In spite of the fact that I have been receiving your videos since sometime, today I got the time to go over some of them. I am more than pleased and happy to go over the material you are explaining to us. I feel that it is really with a great value and you gained it after years and years of teaching. I will definitely be more than pleased to be in touch with you and listen more than once to all of your available videos. Thanks again and take care.

Wow! Right now you change my channel…in this moment I’m going to delete all pages I’m following, all the screenshot….I have wasted time jumping from one page, channel, accounts to another and without achieving my goal. The voices told me “don’t speak yet, you need to learn more” and I’m studying English for 3 years and I don’t speak fluently yet. Now I’ll speak more with my self and with everyone who wants to talk English with me. thanks, thanks, thanks.

This was the most empowering video about fluency I've ever seen. I've seen plenty and most of them were mediocre, giving some steps to follow but not really explaining why. This was simple to understand, and was filled with practical information about the learning process that's necessary in order to become fluent. Thanks!

Thank you for a useful video! It appears to me that my biggest problem lies in lack of practice in writing and speaking. I have some understanding of my problematic areas and what to do, but when it comes to actually doing something about it, I'm not as consistent as I wanna be. So, to get better at those areas, I : - keep my diary every day. It usually takes 10-20 min to do so. By the way, I've been doing this for around 120 days, and I already see some improvements. - do some pronunciation exercises. I try to do it every single day for 15 min, but, unfortunately, I haven't made the habit of doing it daily like I did with keeping a diary. - write a few comments on Reddit or RU-vid - have 1-2 speaking sections with native speakers per week

Hi, is a very good video with some interesting advices for english learners. I have to comment that when you mentioned the pillars I personally think that one of the most important is the listening , you don´t care so much about that but for me is the best way for learning and then obviously as you mention the conversation and confidence.
