"I'll be the one to become the Pirate King" "You're seeing quite far into the future" I don't know why but I find it so powerful that Katakuri, a villain we've barely know for a minute, thinks Luffy got what it takes to reach his goal
That single exchange warps up the fight perfectly. not only does Katakuri think Luffy has what it takes, the tone of it also says as though Luffy has even bested him in Future Vision. Something along the line of "You're seeing much further into the future than i even dare to . I myself cant see myself be a pirate king yet"
The way Luffy put his hat on face of katakuri to hide his face is a such great way to show respect our opponent ...bcoz katakuri doesn't liked someone to see his face... that last hat scene after battle is just MASTERPIECE
I feel like physically, Katakuri could've kept going, but mentally he accepted defeat like, "Luffy is not a man to be taken down", or something along those lines, so he ended up losing his will to fight.
More so he lost reason to even continue the fight, as well as will. If he won it would only hurt Luffy and end his dream, who he is starting to really admire, if he lost nothing would really happen except Luffy escaping as well as on a character level gaining everything discussed in the video.
@@timothyvillanueva1 It's not pity, it's respect. The fact of the matter is he was stronger than Luffy at the beginning of the fight and he was incredibly inspired seeing him get up over and over again. People say he lost will to fight as if Katakuri is weak willed and coulnd't have went on, but that wasn't really the point. It was a battle of ideals and Luffy was fighting to free Katakuri.
Katakuri lost because luffy knocked him off his fake throne luffy was always on a real throne no matter what katakuri faked who he was so when he got knocked on his back his whole make shift reality was destroyed and so he lost
@@chacesherrod6713 He never was knocked on his back he choose to fall on his back he choose to not continue the fight he could have continued he just respected luffy so much he gave him the win.
Brullee is one of my favorite characters in one piece! For the first time, Luffy is the invader that came to mess up with someone's home in the whole cake arc as well. Brulle shows such amazing widths of emotion and humour, her moments with her brother are my favorites overal!!! the fact that the "villain" wants to keep his family protected is what breaks the big mom pirates from the rest, since we see different notions from each of them as a crew.
The part were Luffy says he's gonna become the Pirate King and Katakuri replies by saying "You are seeing quite far into the future" still gives me chills.
"Are you still going to target Big Mom?" to me sounds like "Will I get to fight you again". also Luffy placing his black hat on Katakuri's face is a nice touch.
Katakuri and Brulee's relationship also reflects the relationship of Sanji and Reiju, where he has protected her and created a persona and Reiju has a persona of heartlessness to protect Sanji but in reality both of them aren't like that. Both Reiju and Katakuri also find it impossible to break away from their parental figures (BM and Judge).
Katakuri doesn't want to escape from BM? Where did you get that from? Neither does Reiju. If either of them wanted that, they'd just leave, especially Katakuri. Everyone in that family knows he's the strongest of them and still respect him even after his defeat. He is also one of the successors of their "empire" if BM dies or "retires" lol
@@akirosakuragi9279 I didnt say he or Reiju wanted to escape. I only highlighted that they both developed personas while under the control of overbearing parental figures which they have to live up to certain expectations which has lead them to feeling obliged to serve them. Katakuri's righteous, unbeatable and undefeated self and Reijus heartlessness are for their parents and sibling both as the oldest. While in reality they are nothing like how their siblings see them except for brulee with katakuri and Sanji with reiju. Who both saw through these personas. I'm even pretty sure Sanji asked Reiju why she didn't leave for her to relpy saying its too late for her but not for him and to live his life. Unless I remember that wrong or is anime only I don't know but the parallels are there. I hope this cleared up my thoughts for you.
@@akirosakuragi9279 well their parents aren't their sole purpose. katakuri stays because he wants to protect his siblings he doesn't give a shit about big mom, reiju is literally under a trance where she can't disobey her dad
Nihilistic Pancakeface I wouldn’t say he doesn’t give a shit about her. I think he has a traditional outlook on her. She might be toxic but she’s still his momma, typical dysfunctional family stuff
Yeah, freedom from strict, oppressive regimes. Freedom from society's expectations. Freedom to choose your true family--Sanji with Zeff and the Straw Hats and Katakuri with Brulee.
Ther is no freedom in current world and its just getting worse lik the taliban situation rn,mayb series like this wil b the hope of ppl later on when things get worse
Katakuri and Brulee were some of my favorites from the big mom pirates. It's especially cool when you consider that luffy and katakuri's battle was the man who never falls vs the man who always gets back up
honestly for me i think the thing i loved the most of this fight was how much you could see that katakuri was really a product of those around him rather than a villain at heart and it makes me hopefully that at bare minimum, when big moms gets killed eventually that he will take the reigns of the big mom pirates and finally fix the problems that his mother caused for so many and more than that, it would be awesome if him and brulee ended up at wano to stop big mom and take her down the way he should have long ago and that he would do that so as to let luffy achieve his goal of taking down kaido and freeing the land of wano from his tyranny :D beyond all of that since i feel its almost a guarantee that katakuri will probably become the next leader of the big mom pirates, that he will actually become one of luffies rivals in the same way kid is or in the same way that it felt like rodger and whitebeard were where they are technically enemies but rather than fighting eachother out of hatred for one anohter, they fight eachother to prove themselves to each other :)
I just finished watching whole cake island for the first time and man this fight was incredible. Katakuri is an incredible character and might even be my favorite op antagonist. Another thing I'll mention is that I had seen a clip of katakuri stabbing himself to make up for luffy's wound before watching the fight, but when it happened it still hit me really hard. Truly a goat antagonist and fight no doubt
"Did Katakuri actually loose against Luffy, or did he actually leave the mirror-world as a winner..." Everything Katakuri leaves, he leaves as a winner.
@@chriswentz5197 The shit gets flushed to be forgotten. Katakuri leaves with empty bowels, refreshed and ready to eat more donuts. #nevalost #100wins #0loses
One of my favorite details is the reason for Katakuri's bounty; Gomu = 5 6, Katakuri’s bounty is 1B 57M. 57>56. It's another way for Oda’s to say that he’s better than Luffy
@@niaou4903 5 in japanese is read as GO and likewise 6 is MU (one of the readings mind you). So 5 6 == GO MU == Rubber. That's why they're saying that 56 is luffy's number. tbh I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but it's cool nevertheless
@@ayden7012 wooooosh. Sticky, gets pushed down and doesn't bounce back, there's no saying thats "I'm rubber you're mochi"... it's a thing that's meant to say they're both polymers but ones obviously stronger and sturdier while ones sticky and malleable. As we see in this fight, The malleable and sticky Katakuri *changes* and becomes *attached* to Luffy while the sturdy younger pirate comes out on top.
Our two favorite gluttons! One of my favorite concepts is how Haki evens the playing field tremendously. Pre-Time Skip it was all about the best devil fruit and your techniques you can accomplish. Post-Time Skip, it is all about training and how much better you can become through hard work.
Not just one of my favorite antagonists in OP, but seriously one of my favorites of all time through all of anime. Katakuri's character development as well as Luffy's development throughout their fight is better than I’ve seem in most story's!
You know it's hilarious. Rogersbase literally asked this question about an article that came out after you left the Reverie because they needed somebody to translate. I am low-key thinking right now that you dropped out knowing he was going to ask it because it would spoil this video.
keep in mind that this fight took place around chapter 850. 20+ years after the first chapter and the series still offering compelling fights and character development scenes, the best in the series at that point. And even now in Wano its continuing to give us these amazing compelling fights 1000 chapters later.
Luffy covering kat’s mouth with his hat speaks volume to me. It’s luffy showing his respect Kat. I also love how kat apologizes for not noticing flampe interfering and luffy saying it was his fault for not dodging. If/when big mom gets out of the picture I can see them becoming allies because of their shared respect✊🏾
Not every character needs development either... what you are trying to say is if a character is not changed from how we saw him as first sucks as a character which is completely stupid.
@@Tensai1031 then why are you comparing Katakuri's development with straw hats development... Most of the straw hats did get character development only ones that didnt would be either Franky or Brook... and i think both are amazing characters nonetheless.
Stfu about that character develoupment shit, it isnt inherantly needed to make a story or a character good, and it also isnt inherantly good either, its mostly just reduced to a buzz word nowdays used to say «my character got a lvl 5 character develoupment while your character only has a level 2» Stop using the word if you arent really sure on what it means or does or is used for
Just 1 thing Brulee did know about the truth about katakuri as it was for her that he adopted the cool persona. Just a minor correction. Amazing video!!
Bro everything you said in this video is what I’ve been trying to explain to people since the fight. Thank you so much for this beautiful video and putting this perspective on such a huge platform for people to understand.
I’m the only one that had goosebump frenzy during the WHOLE video from start to finish. My heart is still pounding after 10 minutes of watching the vid💪🏼
This battle is pretty unique because most of the fights is for example luffy vs lucci there's alot of fight scenes that is not supposed to show and no progress that's the part what makes me bored and imma be honest i really didn't feel hyped when luffy beat lucci but this fight is so amazing u can't feel boredom while watching there's always progress showing new skills story all in all i love it. One of the best fights I've seen in one piece
This is how fights in Bleach also seem to play out imo. The physical blends into the metaphysical, and fights become as much about ideals and ambitions as they do strength and cleverness.
I also like how Katakuri is continually called a Pelican Eel. In real life, eels are typically portrayed as dangerous creatures. This is the result of their appearance, because they don't have gills, they need to breathe through their mouth, a mouth full of sharp teeth. Eels are also quite shy creatures, typically hiding in cracks and dark crevasses. They only attack when they are cornered.
Fun fact: katakuri’s bounty of 1.057 billion is not arbitrary. We see that Luffy has a reoccurring number of 56 on various occasions, with 56 being gorowase for Gomu. When katakuri repeats how much better he is, it is also reflected by his number being 57
I would resume Katakuris character un the moment he threw his scarf to the floor. The will to smile, to show yourself and enjoy the battle ahead, in that moment he showed us his will to D. That aside, my theory on Katakuri's personality is that his entire self was builded to be the one who protects his family, because his mother could not, he had to be hypersensitive (future sight) to his environment, read how to prevent his mother's hunger pains and prevent mayor deaths, he lived in constant fear and his happiness depended on how his family was. The fight with Luffy was probably the first time he could take his mask/scarf off and be himself. Probably Perospero and other mayor characters of the Charlotte family are feeling something similar, where they have to take care of their mother and fear her. I hope the Elbaf saga will show us how this entire family changes, be it through BM and her story and/or the change that started with Katakuri.
he was in my opinion one of the most important people that he’s fought. Legit everything I was going to comment you legit said it all. He just wanted to surpass someone that was basically the “better” him fighting wise
I agree with your liberation angle Ohara. This fight was a personal growth exercise for both, nothing else. That's why at the end of the "Luffy Vs. Katakuri" fight it didn't feel like Luffy just "beat a big bad" like "Luffy Vs. Mingo." The end of this fight felt more like when Luffy's training with Rayleigh ended. Like Katakuri was the advanced coarse of Rayleigh's training. You explain Katakuri's side beautifully. Katakuri had the edge as far as skill and strength throughout the whole fight. Luffy made him question what he felt was really important and throw in the towel, not loose.
"Luffy liberated the antagonist from himself"...my man...this is some next level analysis...one of the few stories where action scenes are actually dramatic and character changing instead of just being spectacular.
I can see once Luffy becomes the pirate king Katakuri will be like white beard was to Roger and I’d love to see that dynamic between the two of them especially if he start his own crew or takes over from Big mom
One of the details I loved a lot as well, even tho very small, is him removing his coat that says Charlotte. He isn't fighting in the name of his mother, or his family, the fight truly became a personal one. I do believe that was the moment his actual willpower switched and went to the "Please beat me, I want to be free too". This battle was crazy good, Katakuri is besides Crocodile and Doflamingo my favorite antagonist in this series. Really hope he is coming back someday in the story. Not as an antagonist, but as a friend.
Crazy that they built a bond through fighting each other to borderline death. I feel that these two became friends after this fight. This was truly a masterpiece of a fight.
For me, katakuri is the only S teir antagonist in any anime I have ever seen or watched, he's my all time favorite antagonist. I loved this video so muchhh, and you talked about a couple perspectives I never really thought about before. I loved the respect Kata gained for Luffy through the figth by stabbing himself, getting angry that a family member interrupted, waiting for luffy to get up when he could have easily killed him. I thought towards the end of the fight it was really cool seeing him losing that "cool & badass" persona. People think Kata is weaker but he's far more powerful in my opinion, and I think he just wanted to give up at the end, and wanted luffy to go succeed/progress. Luffy gained a physical haki strength and kata gained a better insight of what he wants to become.
My favorite character in the series. The part where they both use conquerors haki is one of my favorite moments. I just love when the “bad guys” actually fight fair and admit defeat.
Although I'm not long on your channel yet (mainly for procrastinating from learning for exam 😅) I must say I love your very empathetic way to analyze some characters in OP!! ✨ Keep going with that 🙌🏼
@@braveboy1million908 dude watch the fight again. you cant be that stupid? This fight is different from Arlong.......no? Man im not supposed to explain this fight? omg
@@rorozoro9703 Katakuri was flat on the ground unconscious and Luffy left walking, there's no way Katakuri won. If anything you might argue that it was a tie, but that's it
Welp, U Right! Plus, if anyone hasn't noticed, Luffy doesn't stop fighting till his opponent is defeated( main Antagonist of the present Arc for Him). Yet seemed to Pass Out Before THE Katakuri falls backwards ,Conveniently after learning Advanced Observation Haki😏
I believe many downplay this fight compared to the ones that follow due to the lack of the theme acknolegdement.Oda often makes changes and I believe he made some crucial with this fight. The Awakened Mochi work similar to Awakened environment from Nika. Originally I feel Dogtooth was ment to wield a biden and not a trident. This cones full circle that Luffy represent a Herculean/Thor savior figure. Totland is the land where Big Mom hold a lot of Souls, similar to the Mythological underworld of Hades. The staff of the lord of the underworld was a biden. Hercules had to fight him in order to complete his final labor, and as a side quest he release his old companion Theseus, a prince from Athens who was captured in the underworld due to a wedding affair gone wrong( I intenionally oversimplify the context of the myth , but it screams the Sanji situation) . Also the time of the Whole Cake island many so a resemplance between Kat and Luffy. Now the mother of Hades was the Titan Rea. There was a glipse of the theory that Linlin might be Luffies Grandma despite no info of Godvalley , Big mom stated he knew Garp on fishman. All this is debunked but it was fitting the whole idea that Katakuri was Luffy uncle training him.( Rea-Cronus =Linlin and Garp, Dias=Dragon making Hercules Luffy ) . Well this might still fit with the Dark King Rayleigh.( Buggy claimed Silver might have some kind of Uncle relation to Luffy after Marinefornt). Sorry for the curtain.
Bro when I watched this fight the first time I really felt engaged in this fight because it felt different from the same patters this is my favourite battle in the series so far
