Morning chores. If you're a homesteader, you do them. Without thinking. They are just what you do. Same with evening chores. We'll start off the video with morning chores, before Todd even thinks about getting out of bed. And then head off to the garden to work on getting the last few plants in the ground - before we take some time to sit back and watch everything grow!
We planted a lot of pepper this year - like, a LOT of peppers. And we'll talk together about topping (pruning) your peppers plants to increase your yields. It's really easy, and I'll show you how in this video. We'll also wrap up planting our experimental straw bales for the year. After this, all that's left to plant is the sweet potato slips, but we're going to save that for it's own video - as it rightly deserves. Some people are so PRECIOUS about seeds and seedlings; it's kind of weird! I see many people saying they hate to overseed because they just can't stand thinning out the extra seedlings. Relax, y'all. Seeds are not that expensive and if you're growing open-pollinated/heirloom varieties you're going to get more seeds for free anyhow. Plant 'em like they're free and see what happens. Try something different, have fun with it. It's OK to lose or thin out some plants now and then. Think of the millions and millions of seeds in nature that never germinate at all - it's just not that big of a deal to "waste" a few if a new experiment doesn't work out.

I make plant markers using cottage cheese, sour cream, etc.. cut down the side then around the bottom. Cut down the width you'd like the tags to be. Then I cut one end into a point. I use scissors to cut everything. I put a small rubber band around to keep them neat and tidy. Saves a small amount of plastic out of landfills as a bonus.

Its amazing what you can reuse over and over. Milk jugs for winter planting, Ive started cutting some markers from plastic bottles too. And they will make great mini greenhouses even after you plant in case you get a sudden drop in temp.

I was getting rid of some old plastic blinds recently, and happened to also see a video where someone had some of those slats and cut them up for plant markers. Perfect lucky timing for me ;)

I'll also add this - I need to get some paint markers* for that sort of thing. Regular Sharpie etc always seems to fade away or wash off by the end of the season. *not a paintball gun lol, they're literally like magic markers but they have actual paint inside instead of normal ink, so it stands up to the elements a lot better.

I thought I was the only one to do that! Nice to know others are concerned about keeping plastic out of the landfills. Everything has at least a second life or more before it gets recycled.

@@chomama1628 Remember only #1 (PET) and #2 (HDPE) are actually recyclable! Everything else goes to the landfill in the USA.

Girl, this year is MY first time to grow everything from seed with the exception of a few strawberry plants. I grew WAY too many plants (how was I to know I grew plants from seeds so well?!?!?!)! Plant something anyway, so many things can be grown if short season left. Brassicas due well now. Onions do well over winter if mulched well.

With all the rain and coolness the seeds I planted for peppers and tomatoes just broke through after a whole month or so. The weather has been crazy. Today and yesterday we have a break in the weather. Its actually sunny. Im just starting up gardening here in central south and learning how to do it in our hot weather....if it ever gets here...lol My peas are starting to blossom and and Im understanding why my mother used to tell me God was in the garden.

I was told by my MIL not to plant my hot peppers and bells together. Supposedly if cross pollinated the bell peppers will be hot, and the hot varieties will be mild. I’m new to gardening, so still learning. But I did separate my varieties. Thanks for all your great content! 🌺

No, that is not how it works. Your plants will grow fine this year. It is only if you save cross pollinated seeds from the peppers and plant them next year that you may have some crazy varieties. Good luck! 👍

my son and grandkids built me a raised bed that is tall enough for me to stand at and garden. It is as deep as your straw bales so there is plenty of depth. It is so nice I told them I need some more longer ones.

I also top my pepper, but i also put them in bigger and bigger pots and now they are in 1 liter pots before I plant them out. They are realy big nog. How do I search to see if you have any tutorials on cold pickles ?Here in the UK most pickle food is cooked but I remember seeing a man from achannell called Art and Bri and he fermented? White cabbage and I wondered if you can do that with other vegetables. I'm trying to grow nadepenos and cucumbers for preserving

I created 3 new raised beds this year and must have done something right, because everything I plant in them are exploding.... including my jalapeno and bell peppers, cukes, cantaloupe, green beans and southern peas.

Just transplanted the last of my tomatoes today and made a trellis for my beans. I have just one thing I'm waiting on to sprout so it can be transplanted. And if it doesn't grow, I'll transplant something else. And a larger trellis and that's all I need to do. Everything else is in the ground and doing well.

I see you have learned all my tricks. drop the shovel and move and now its out of reach. Put the plant in the ground and realize I forgot to fertilize. Unlike me, you remembered after one. I usually remember later that night or the next day after they are all planted. I have done peppers with 2 plants in one cell. I didn't have the heart to tear it out. =)

I just came in at 5am.....from my next to last garden push. I need to start my own YT channel on "the night-time gardener". I just cannot take the heat plus I work night-shift as an RN. So it has worked out (so far) that I work in my garden on the hotter days at night. I have had a couple of days off together and have been finishing up my garden "push". I get up about 2pm and work until 2-5am getting things done. I do this all summer long. I try to harvest during the evening daylight hours so I can see the best and do any "chores" at night with a camping type headlamp. I appreciate all of your content. So happens last year my tiller transmission went out so I set up a "no till" garden. I am loving it so far. Covering everything with straw mulch and over winter covered a "problem area" with black plastic. Had great production last year. Will see how this year goes. I love being able to set up garden structures (that I never could have done before with "traditional" tilling), and leaving them in place and planting around them. Best wishes for great garden.............I have already seen pest pressure down here in KY. I have a feeling our early spring.....is going to lead to lots and lots of bugs. Trying marigolds this year and other intercrops such as basil and dill to see if that really works. Thanks again.

Zone 5b Central IL, we have yet to be able to harden off the plants we've started inside.... We've had hard frosts. Snow flurries, lots of rain!!! I'm rather jealous....

Lovely Rachel! I got my tomato's in yesterday, they were so tall, we had to do the on the side tunnel burying. My husband had to do the breaking up of the soil with his auger, and I made the tunnels. It took two of us to put the plant in, beause they were SO leggy, literally 2 foot tall. It took us 4 hours to get 30 plants in the ground. I was exhausted. Today is peppers, and squash seeds. We are having to water now, as its gone from 30 degrees at night (Brighton Michigan) to 60 at night and 80 during the day. We started the tomato's and peppers and put them on my sewing machine table in a room that had three windows. Everything did real well, until they got so tall. I have a small iron back porch, so I moved them all to that and the steps, husband put plastic sheeting around three sides. I could get to them through the sliding door and water them. But they did so well even despite the very cold Michigan spring. This is much easier for us then a hoop house. (maybe next year we'll do that when husband is retired). (so much work). We have decided to grow green beans one year (enough to can 40 or 50 quart jars, and then alternate tomato's the following year. This way I'm not canning so much during the hot summer. Just not as young as I used to be. Blessings to you guys! I appreciate your well done video's.

I’ve got trays of hot & bell peppers to plant this evening. CA Wonders usually do good. I still have a dozen Super Sioux tomato plants I grew from seeds to plant. I’ve already got 33 in the ground, a few with green tomatoes on them. My yellow grape tomato has fruit today after all the rain we’ve had in middle TN. I held my SS tomato plants back so they wouldn’t all come in at the same time. I planted 3 hills of cantaloupes that are doing well. My peas & green beans, squash, cucumbers, & okra are doing good. We’ve been eating radishes, spinach, onions, lettuce & strawberries for a month. Enjoyed watching your video. Hey from right outside Nashville! 👋😁

This year I am trying 2 pepper plants in one hole. I heard they like that. I winter over peppers in zone 4 Minnesota. Peppers are very hard here but my 2 year old peppers get as big as a bush and have huge yields for me. I also get red bell peppers in June with 2 year old peppers.

I have also heard that if you pick off the first blooms on your peppers that you get a better yield. Great video. I plan on getting my garden all in Memorial Day weekend. I have a full hip replacement coming very soon after that so I want to get it all in at least. We'll figure everything out after that. I may have to ask for help this year at least for a little while.

I had 8 seeds in a starter pot of Roma tomatoes and peppers - poblano, green bell, red bell, jalapeños, etc and I planted them around together. I did prune some of the non bearing limbs off tomatoes so there would be plenty of air circulating through and we had the best growth season ever! I didn't even give anymore fertilizer after the initial planting. I figured so many in one close area that they would consume all of the nutrients out of the soil and would need more. They ALL did great! Did it again this year. Green beans too! Will thin anything that starts to look like they need it. High yields!!!!

My hardening off process this year involved sitting the plants outside in the sun for six hours one day then planting them the next day, that was almost two weeks ago and so far so good.

Happy Gardening to you as well. We have had somewhere between 12 and 15 inches of rain in the last 2 weeks. So far my garden is flourishing. Everything is growing so fast it is becoming a jungle. I have those same.mushrooms in my raised beds, and some in ground rows. Also amended with goat barn clean out.

Pruning/topping peppers does indeed depend somewhat on the variety. Anaheims tend to always be tall and leggy, and benefit very much from early topping in my experience. Superhots on the other hand usually branch out very well on their own and don't generally seem to need it. Even within one variety I often find some plants that branch well and some that need topping. In that case, I only save seeds from the ones that naturally grew more squat and with lots of branches.

I live in TN now but grew up in WI. It's pretty funny... people back in WI say "OMG how do you stand the summers" and people here say "oh you don't know what hot and humid is." I got news - it's really not that different at all. WI gets 90F+ and crazy humid too... the only real difference is that summer there lasts about eight weeks and summer here lasts five months ;) I'll take the longer growing season over those brutal northern winters every time.

I've heard from several sources that peppers like being planted as a pair - they like their buddies, they support each other. Not intentionally, I planted pairs of peppers in pots last year and they grew amazingly well for a small pot and gave a great yield. So maybe there is something to that :) I usually grow salad greens, carrots, scallions, radishes and beets together in polyculture pots, and they do well all crammed in there together. I planted a polyculture bed in my back garden several years ago and it worked well too. I put all the "like" seed together and broadcast them into the bed/pots, and that's it. I let them go to seed and many of them reseeded the next year and it was actually more beautiful the second year. I couldn't have planned a prettier garden :) I just love all those things growing together in wild masses. I know a lot of people don't like it, but I've had good luck with it.

Another thing I did with my peppers in pots last summer was to allow low-growing beneficial weeds (last year it was purslane - I did not plant it) to run abandon underneath them. It didn't hurt them in any way, it acted like a living mulch and I got to eat the purslane leaves so it was a happy marriage. I don't know if they will come back this year or not.

Your look so happy when your in the garden. My garden is my happy place too. I had done some starts for a friend....they moved to California. So I'm going to put those in my garden. My very first time starting from seed. So glad I did my own starts. The prices here are at least $1 more per 6pk than they were last year. I did buy a few peppers and tomatoes of different kinds that I wanted and didn't have. Hope I'm able to save seeds for next year and to share.

the mrs. here...i had to laugh when i saw your red toenail polish! my sister had to stop wearing any so her turkeys would stop pecking her toes, lol!!! and i am so jealous! wisconsin has been so humid that i have been physically sick. i go out every am and pm to care for my happy little transplants that are waiting to be planted. take pride in a job well done! Me too, i start off with everything labeled, but after it’s planted, I have to wait for the fruit to know which kind. Someday I will manage to label the plants in the garden.

Love your garden and new flower bed. Your starts look great!!! I watched video a few years ago called The 52 Week Garden's Bale Garden July 2015. I believe if I remember right he is in Georgia. The entire garden made out of bales and he has them on drip. I liked how he mentioned no weeds and garden going strong during the hot months. And the fact that everything is raised. I have a fractured back and always trying to make things easier. Purchased timer and trying to get things on drip this year. I am so glad your trying the bale experiment. I will be watching your progress. Love your videos!!!

Doesn't it feel so good to have everything a most planted? I just finished planting almost everything... I am going to be doing a lot of succession planting this year but the bulk of everything is done!

I tried hay bale gardening this year for the first time and my plants are doing the best I've ever seen. My cherry tomatoes already have fruit on them.... oh, and I never need to water or fertilize them. I wish I've known about this gardening method before

Did you make a pickled banana pepper video? I have tons of them coming on my plants this year. Don’t know why it’s so different this year.🤷🏾‍♀️ My peppers rarely produce anything-except the jalapeños. But we buy pickled banana peppers from the store because we love them so much. I’m thankful they’re going gang busters this year.

Everything you grew looks fantastic! Even better and healthier than the ones I bought from the nursery. Next year I will attempt growing my own plants. Plenty of time to research grow lights. Thanks for all you share.
