Hi there are visible joins in all the panels. Try a forum on Facebook for availability from Thailand. I’m pretty sure you can get most of them imported. Thanks

I have a mega rare MK2 Crew Cab four door 1986 4x4 without a rear tub. The tub on it was not original and tried to repair it. Every welded joint was gone and was worse state than this one. I gave up and scrapped the tub. Now have a restoration project without a tub and have run out of hope of ever getting a decent MK2 donor.

Lads, some great tips and pointers here, if you could just post the rest of the videos in the series that would be wonderful hahaha. Currently restoring a mk2 and the tub needs a little work, As you've already said panels for the tubs literally don't exist for the mk2 anymore so really happy I've finally found a relevant tub build for tips. Top effort

Anyone who doesn't understand the long process of doing this stuff will either learn or zone out. Those who stay will get a lot out of it. The nice thing of watching good videos on RU-vid this is that one can learn many different ways to accomplish a task and develop their own practices. That or at least be informed about how things are done in case they need to contract someone to do the job. Are you familiar with David Gardiner at Classic Metal Shaping in Little Oakley? I'm not sure if he still sells them but he had a fantastic DVD explaining all the coachbuilding methods that you employ. For "young guys" you have great skills. Looking forward to more videos...
@Metal_shaper_tom
@Metal_shaper_tom 2 года назад
@@Joe.Doucette I think I’ve seen his stuff but I’ll look him up and double check. This is just our own workshop that we go to in the evening and weekends. We are full time coach builders , panel beater, fabricators by day working very high end restoration making complete bodies out of Ali and steel so to us this is fairly simple stuff to do but we just wanted to share our skills on RU-vid and grow the channel as there aren’t many places that do a high end finish on normal cars and if someone learns something from these videos then we have achieved what we have set out to do hopefully 👨‍🏭

I enjoy all of your videos! How close was this project to being completely remade from scratch and just cutting off the bits you needed? You're already about making the whole bed. Drilling all of those spot welds and dissecting all the panels cost money too. I'm just curious on the mindset of a business vs. a home project.
@Metal_shaper_tom
@Metal_shaper_tom 2 года назад
Hi James and Thanks! Nearly everything except the main frame and skeleton will be made from scratch, sometimes it's actually more economical to do it this way as lots of small patches lead to wonky panels and more work for the paint shop. If a better tub was available or new panels then that would be preferable, however most of the tubs out there are in roughly this condition and there are no good quality panels available.

Most informative. I can see where I went wrong when I cut off a wing to replace on my car. I cut my hands on the metalwork and have always worn gloves since, how do you avoid the lacerations, or is that experience? By the way, I hate wearing the gloves, as the are the thicker ones (not welding gloves)
@Metal_shaper_tom
@Metal_shaper_tom 2 года назад
We have worked with metal everyday for something like 18 years so we have toughened skin 😂 but it is inevitable that you will get injurys, Tom usually wears gloves but I (Andy) don't wear gloves usually as I find it difficult to feel what I'm doing.
@njwithy
@njwithy 2 года назад
@@Metal_shaper_tom Ha! Thank You. I completely understand, as I do not like the loss of feeling when wearing gloves. "Normal" blue gloves are useless, of course.

I am intruged, you mention datum point but have (from video) not measured anything or even braced the bed while its sat on the horses, how have you kept it square and plumb??
@Metal_shaper_tom
@Metal_shaper_tom 2 года назад
Evening. You’ve made a good point. So as you can see I’ve already made one side so I’ve already got my measurements and workings out already jotted down when I was making that so this bit I haven’t shown in the video. As for keeping it squared I’ll be checking this as I go along plus the top rail that remains in place keeping the overall length as well as keeping the middle floor section in .Ive also got the measurements from that point to the tub floor so I know what hight it has to go back in and the wheel tub measurements and floor sizing ect to help me with the overall width. The rear tailgate will help with squaring up and gapping the rear end. I’ll make sure it all sits level when I’m doing this. I get what you mean about bracing ( structurally ) and I would on a car if I was replacing a large amount of metalwork from past experience I didn’t feel the need ( just my opinion ) on this job and felt I had enough info and and can manage those factors as I progress on the job. There’s nothing wrong with bracing on this job if somebody wanted to do that . Hope that clears up your questions as I’m not the best at trying to explain everything 👍

@@Metal_shaper_tom i wasnt try to nit pick it was more constructive criticism, I also have a RU-vid channel teaching/helping people with restorations and I have also been pulled up on things in vids that seem extremely obvious and common sense at the time of recording but many many many ppl dont understand some of these basics and thats the people that are watching, that being said i do love your work and its refreshing to see them skills this side of the pond

We are in Cheltenham if your ever passing by.we work for a large restoration company in the day making handmade bodies in steel and Ali etc and just do this for a bit of fun in the evenings and weekends on more normal cars . Hopefully well get better in front of camera over time the more we put out as I take my hat off to anyone giving this ago as it’s not easy! Good luck on your RU-vid journey to!

Very tidy work, as always. By the time labour was factored in would new panels (assuming they were available from Toyota) have made financial sense, rather than making them? I understand the answer may be "because we can" which is fair enough, and it's much more enjoyable content.

Hello Billy, we're not too sure what you are talking about? People require premium to watch videos ad free across all of youtube, we personally don't have premium and have the patience to bear a few seconds worth of ads, that's how youtube (the website make money) We have no control and nothing to do with adverts or anything our end I'm afraid.

Hello Billy, I think you are mistaken. We have personally bought a new planishing hammer, from frosts. We have done 2 youtube "shorts" (15 second quick videos) of us giving it a quick go, that's all, they are NOT adverts! we are excited and wanted to share our first attempts with the new tool and thought we'd have a go at a 'Short'. Someone else has commented, so we are not sure why you can't express your grievances directly to the shorts.
