1 Way Lighting Circuit 2 Plate Method Testing Continuity of CPC, Polarity & Insulation Resistance

In this video I show you how to test a 1 way lighting circuit that is wired using the 2 plate method where the feed is take to the switch. The circuit contains 2 LED downlights (spotlights). I show how to carryout the continuity of CPC, polarity and installation resistance tests using my Megger MFT tester when the circuit had LED downlights connected. The 2 plate method is a very common wiring method used on site so it’s important appreciate electricians and trainees understand it.

Thank you for delivering this video to us, It has been a while since the megger came out of the dust. Disconnecting the load is so easy using connectors. In the Netherland we work allot with Wieland connectors for light systems.

OK, I'll bite. It's 'megohms'. Always. Also, I'm learning more from watching excellent videos like this on a number of channels about how BS7671 electrical installation testing is taught and practiced in reality. My background is in protection and control commissioning for 6.6, 11 and 33kV networks. What you describe as a visual 'polarity check' , I would call a wire check *only* - the *polarity* of the installation may, as yet, be unproven and could be incorrect at the cable-head (but I concede that I may have missed the video where you have already confirmed supply polarity).

When you use 250v DC for insulation resistance tests between Line and Neutral, when it reads says 10 megaohms it doesn't always mean it is ok to use 500v afterwards as there may be a an unknown SPD connected connected

On the IR test don’t you have to operate the switch as otherwise if it’s off you’re then not testing either the line to CPC or N between the switch and the lamps?

If you were just doing a polarity test would you have to open the switch to do a visual ?? I mean to confirm you were not switching the earth ? Would this be really necessary in that case

I’ve learned that you can bridge live and neutral to avoid device damage for the insulation resistance test

You would only use the earth bar as there is only one circuit... normally you would remove the cpc to carry out R1+R2 to confirm you have a cpc not an earth continuity from another circuit or bonding

Anyone else find Collingwood lights a pain in the arse? Esp for the £? Seem to be very incompatible with lots of dimmers...

Definitely not “Megger” Ohms, as Megger is a brand name. The SI (System International) prefix is “mega” Ohms with symbol “M”.

Noo don't disconnect the led... What if you have 100s etc or not accessible it's not economical fit.. Some led are integrate.. How can you do instullation resistance test???.?

Thats what iam trying to find out as lots of houses have integrated down lights with no quick connection to disconnect so do u just record at 250v dc ??

Hello, will you be doing an example of a 2 way 2 plate? or a 3 way (intermediate) 2 plate on the board?
