From what I understand, the yellowing is due to oxidation. The uv-light accelerates that process. Curtains will help, but oxidation will still occur. I've kept my favorite books in plastic air-tight containers. I use ezy storage containers. They are see through, but air tight, and my books look good as new. As a cool diy project, I think you should make plastic airtight covers (that look good) for each compartment of your bookshelf. Something that you can just "plug" into each opening. You can add a uv-blocking car wax to the outside of the containers. IF the walls of each compartment isn't air tight, you can use packaging tape to cover the edges and corners, and some talc powder to take the shine off the packaging tape. Something like that would be a good proto-model. I'm sure you can get fancier. A permanent solution, is something archivists do, I'm not familiar with it, but it involves chemically altering each page of your book, by dipping it in some chemical which removes the acid in the paper, but leaves the look unaltered.

the first manga i bought was a sailor moon one from norma (spanish version) and for me was cool bc the paper was a quite thick bond paper so i thought all mangas were like that lol then i bought some english versions of other mangas and they had bulky paper. i think bond paper editions last longer. in my case the WORST problem i have is humidity, that shit ruined all my life not only my books 😂

As long as i can still read my books i couldnt give 2 shits if mine turn yellow but if you really want to prevent them from turning yellow get the mylard comic bags or any mylard bags thats the safest way to go

humidity kills books if you place them in containers of any kind that aren't air tight. It traps humidity

Nice video, I have my comics in a very sunny room; one of the walls is all widow. However, I keep the widow shut in the morning when direct light would hit my bookselfs. Still, with no direct sunlight, spines have faded... Curtains will certainly protect books, but I think I'm going to try putting a UV filter film across my window.
@Nikogus
@Nikogus 3 года назад
how long can I get away with having the spines of my manga in sight of my window? I’m moving in a few months but until then I pretty much only have my bookshelf which keeps the paper itself shaded but not the spines. I’m wondering if I should just wait it out because I really don’t like covering my manga (I only started recently collecting so all of my volumes are pretty new). also my window is on the side of my house and I can never directly see the sun from inside of it, does this make a difference?

@@ottmaku This is wrong. Keeping them locked away is just as harmful, the books require air circulation or the off gassing from the books themselves and their shelves will yellow the books. You want to keep away from sun, in a room that doesn't fluctuate temperature a lot, around a stable 20-25 celcius and away from a high humidity environment, have good air circulation, regularly dust them and take them out occaisonally. Contact paper between the books and the shelf and don't push the books all the way to the back of the shelf.
