(1) Why We're Featuring MikroTik Routers 

I hope you find our ongoing series to be helpful. MikroTik are extremely powerful, which can be daunting for new users. But hopefully our videos lend a hand.

Once you walk up the Mikrotik way, it is VERY hard to go back to anything else, especially SOHO-oriented.

Yeah, that includes Ubiquiti, although their APs are great.

@S K I will have to replace my UniFi UAP-AC-LR with a wifi-6 AP at some point and am willing to move away from Ubiquiti, as I have had to reflash it on three occasions and I kind of hate it now. I will have to look at what TP-Link have on offer.

If you can, use routers just for routing and access points for wifi. It may not even be more expensive(if you use the mikrotik router) and provides way more flexibility. You don't have to replace your router to use a new wifi standard, for example, can setup multiple access points, etc

It is less about that particular router and more about tools that MikroTik provides even with entry level hardware. If the devices has RouterOS, then yes, it can do what you are asking for.

I have a hEX Gr3 (gigabit router without an integrated AP) running inside a small box, at the top of a tower, for three years without any glitch. In the Summer, the box hits 55+ degrees celcius almost every day.

We had Mikrotik router continuously running from 2012 to 2019 with no issues, it didn't break we just upgraded to new version of Mikrotik.

You don't *install* Pi-Hole on it, no - it's a router; you set the DNS settings to point to your Pi-Hole. In my setup, I have it so even if someone tries to use an external DNS server, the RB will intercept and re-route to Pi-Hole.

hAP AC has been around a while, but is still current. The one I demo is Gigabit on all ports. You could upgrade to something with more power (and a higher price) if desired, and that's one of the beautiful things about MikroTik: They offer powerful enterprise-grade routers at all price points. Ours is perfect for our small studio (a small business with under 10 employees), but a larger business can simply buy the next one up in the line, and so-on - but the firmware capabilities will be the same. Re. my speedtest: The issue was my ISP, NOT the MikroTik. For good measure, I just ran a speedtest with the exact same setup and today we're getting 880 Mb/s down, 32 Mb/s up. The plan we have is "up to" 1 Gb/s down and 50 Mb/s up, so we're right on track with that.

@@needsomehike I Have the Gl-Inet 750 ex slate now for 2 weeks. It works, but the Slate CPU is very slow. It takes 1 minute to boot.

That seems a little vague. I have a few hundred of them and other than the occasional edge case it works just fine. Admittedly it is not a simple GUI interface that only does a limited number of things but Winbox does a pretty good job of presenting the configuration.
