Electricity in Vancouver is normally all Hydro. There might be a natural gas peaker plant, but when you charge your car, the electricity is normally generated by a water-driven turbine.

As a Vancouverite I agree with pretty much all of this. I will say that as a woman who's not 6'5'', I used to work in the DTES and have never been accosted by the homeless folks there. I've even walked alone in a mini skirt at night and not been so much as cat-called. Ironically I've had way more trouble with regular dudes harassing me or following me from the train. It makes me really sad that we price people out of housing in Vancouver, then criminalize their homelessness. I'm hoping the city takes a turn for compassion, since it's kinder (and cheaper!!) to help people with housing and addiction support than it is to constantly harry them or trash their belongings.

I moved here from England in April and I think you’ve hit the nail on the head - the lifestyle, accessibility and scenery alone help me justify the cost and have had nothing but great weather so far. I have a 1 bedroom fully furnished with bills apartment for $2800 and the sad thing is I feel lucky to be paying that because it’s so tough to find a place that checks all the boxes. I haven’t experienced winter here yet of course but in no way do I regret this move so far! I want to live in a city that shuts down because of a cm of snow. It's such a waste of time shovelling snow. It is nature's way of saying "don't live here". As with Vancouver keep the snow on the top of mountains and go and play up there all you want. Just make sure you live in a place that has so many mountain slopes so close you can go to them after work.

You did a great job accurately depicting this city. I have been lucky enough to call this home for almost 40 years now. We do have problems, but all cities do. With the mild climate here, a lot of marganalized people come from across the country to survive in our winters without frostbite or freezing to death living on the streets. That helps give us a higher than average population of impoverished and entrenched people. I would also like to comment on the building as you had mentioned them not being too tall. There is an aspect of not cutting off views , but it is also noteworthy to mention we are on the pacific rim, and lo0ng over due for a major earthquake as we are frequently reminded. That is a more prevalent reason for the lack of towers... which is also changing. A lot fo the newer buildings are coming in around the 50 to 60 floors as the engineering is making safer structures. (Still to be put to the test.)

Very pricey but really - the rest of the country is quickly catching up. I’m in Ontario, not much better here. Also in London ontario - the violence, homeless, drugs, etc - EXTREMELY bad here. Over the past 5 years it’s been steadily getting out of control. Anyways, great points you make about the quality of life in van . great job trav! The path goes all the way to Dundarave. DTES danger is (somewhat) overrated. I'm a 5'8 disabled guy with zero fighting ability who's walked in the DTES very late at night, alone. If you don't bug them, they typically won't bug you. Obviously, it's recommended to keep your head on a swivel, don't listen to music, yadda yadda. And obviously, I'm still a guy - I assume my experience would be different if I was a woman or in an even worse mobility situation. Still, I think the whole violent crime BS is just the news media having a shitty day and reporting stuff that would've been ignored pre-2020.

It can also come down to preferences and one's personal situation. You need money to live there. A working person will struggle there. And it used to be a very British place, as the native-settler population for English Canada is English and Scottish. But now it's very Chinese, especially in the younger demographics. So if you're young and want to find a partner who is Chinese, or you love that culture and that scene, then it's for you. Otherwise, you may feel quite isolated and experience cultural clashes. We live among other people, not as individuals, and so it's a very significant aspect of life there.

@trav4oilers Have you done the walk that starts behind Park Royal Mall. going West? The path goes through a tunnel of trees and opens to Lions Gate bridge view. The path forks , going right is for cyclists and left for pedestrians to the open ocean view. Walk past the area open for dogs and come to the main parking area for cars looking to enjoy the view. The path goes all the way to Dundarave. It is my favourite walking path in the whole city, and beats the nice UBC, 10th, 8th ave walk towards the city, and down towards Kitsilano,,staying close to the ocean view side (Point Grey Rd to Cornwall).

Of all the Vancouver vlogs, this one is at least somewhat honest. Kudos for mentioning the DTES and the rising crime. It's just as much a part of the city as its natural beauty. I lived in Vancity for 13 years. It's the Rolls Royce of cities. Is it nice? Of course it is. BUT it better be when you're forced to pay the asking price. For the average working class citizen, it's a raw deal no matter how you spin it.

One major reason why you don’t see homeless etc in west van and north van compared to other parts is that there aren’t any services there. Downtown east side believe it or not has one of the highest concentrations of government services, NGOs and charities for these people hence they’re all around there. It’s why everyone gets pissed off when there’s potential news of a service or low income housing proposal in certain neighbourhoods. It’s unfortunate that we are taking in tourist visa refugees by the plane load and not fixing Canada for Canadians

great video - made me appreciate Vancouver more Moved here in 2007 from US never ever looked back. Here is how I see it differently: food is AMAZING and so reasonable to literally eat out every day, THERE IS NO CRIME !!! Have no idea what you are talking about as far as some "scary violent crime" it is the safest place in maybe the entire world - Of course I came from gun happy murder and weapon capital Virginia where school shootings are a normal part of life. Vancouver has been the absolutely best place to raise kids and I am so grateful to live here. PS it is really complicated and hard to immigrate here so very very happy to be past all that hard work and just enjoy now being a citizen. Street addicts are not dangerous here like in the US there are no weapons on the street. This is all from a privileged white lady - if I was Indigenous the story would be very different. But that would take another big comment

@@KeatonDee WOW sure.I don't think you have an idea of what it is like to live in many parts of he US where 70 - 80 % of your neighbours have multiple guns, 150 gun related crimes in a two week period in close vicinity to your home in a small city (Virginia) and, as in my case, a neighbourhood school shooting happens the year your kid is ready for kindergarten. etc. Open carry. anyone ? Vancouver is a great place but i disagree it’s where you’ll have the best quality of life. The rain really gets you down and even if you tolerate it, I find I was much happier living in Calgary where it’s sunny every day and people tend to be much nicer in places that get more sun. Not to mention the cost of living in Van being so high that really brings down your quality of life easily by needing to live in a crappy apartment or having to commute from far outside of the city for your job. I personally feel at the moment, vancouver is not worth the hype.
