The past year we've been working hard to turn our dreams into reality with this huge renovation project. This video documents many of the highs along the way and showcases a lot of the progress we've made. There's still a long way to go, but we're steadily restoring this house back to it's former glory.
Renovating an abandoned farmhouse in Italy doesn't come without it's difficulties, and having this video as a reminder of how far we've come in one-year is truly fantastic.
Our Story:
We sold our apartment in Stockholm, packed up the car and headed for Piemonte. After a couple of months searching for the right house we came across Our Italian Dream House and immediately made an offer. Four weeks later (just three days before Christmas) we signed the contract and had the keys.
It's now early 2022 and we have begun work on the epic renovation that stands before us. We are mortgage free and have a very limited budget so plan to take on as much of the renovation ourselves as possible - follow us on our journey as we turn an abandoned Italian farmhouse into our dream home.

I'd love to do this but the logistics seem daunting: where do you dump all your debris? Where do you find power tools and plaster and tiles? Who makes the custom doors? How do you find all these things in the new country where (I assume) you don't speak the language?

That is a HUGE amount of labor investment. I'm wondering...why not keep the beautiful terra cotta tile flooring in that large room...? 🤔 ...Granted, I'm only 6+ minutes into the video...and I see that you did eventually begin salvaging them, rather than smashing. The bones of the farmhouse are incredible. Those ancient bricks! 😍 I was glad to see you finally got a WHEELBARROW! Those enormous terrazzo tiles are gorgeous. The completed onsuite/bathroom: 👍🏻 Love the tiled patio.
@OurItalianDreamHouse
@OurItalianDreamHouse Год назад
Thank you so much! 😊 The reason we remove the terracotta tiles is because the floor under needed reinforcing (eg remove the old sand and loose cement and replace with a proper concrete slab). The tiles had also been painted with several layers so it was impossible to remove them without having several tiles breaking.

I’m kinda curious how you actually did all pipes and drain systems also with insulation and heating stuff. Not sure which part of Italy it’s located this house, but for sure this is not the things I would do myself if I had no idea how those things works. Black or white Kitchen can looks nice on pictures but it’s really hard to maintain it nice and clean. I would rather to invest in time less natural materials in kitchen and bathroom than follow the trends. This darkroom if you don’t have strong idea how it’s supposed to like could turn out in really narrow and unpleasant area to stay in so you have to be really careful what kind of stuff you want to put in. Anyway, I think it’s a really great job done with this renovation.
@OurItalianDreamHouse
@OurItalianDreamHouse Год назад
Pipes have been completed by a plumber as we need to have them up to code and signed off to be able to have the project completed. The dark green colour is something tried and true as we did this in our 100 year old apartment in Stockholm too. We like to be unique with our interior design and create a truly beautiful space that is inviting and inspirational to be in. Fingers crossed we an pull it off here too

WOW, what a big job that was for both of you, the amazing transformation that was. Was wondering why such dark walls? It makes the space smaller when there are dark walls. Keep up the wonderful work and happiness for everything to go well into the future. Love, Peace, and Happiness to you both.
@physina
@physina Год назад
Rewatch the part of the video where they are applying the dark paint. You will see that the dark portion of the wall appears to look farther away from you than the older white portion. Dark paint can make a wall visually recede and actually increase the apparent size of the room.

I can see that a tremendous amount of hard work has gone i'to this project, but what i don't understand is why buy an old stone built farmhouse, painstakigly remove all the 1960's tiles etc to reveal stone walls then cover it all up to make it into a sleek modern interior that could be anywhere. What have you left of the original ? By the look of it nothing.
@OurItalianDreamHouse
@OurItalianDreamHouse Год назад
Hi Marianne, thanks for the comment - it’s certainly been a lot of hard work! 😅 The farmhouse isn’t actually a ‘stone’ house, it was built with a combination of “mattone crudo” and “mattone cotto” (raw bricks and kiln fired red bricks). The raw bricks look like stone but are far from that, they need to have a plaster coat on top otherwise it will cause big issues over time. When it came to the floors, all the tiles had to be removed to allow for restructuring the floors. The way that it was built originally, placed compacted sand and earth with tiles on top. Removing them and digging out the old earth and sand allowed us to place rebar in the floors and poor new concrete which stiffens up the whole house and improves the structural integrity for generations to come. You have to remember that the house was abandoned for at least 20 years with minimal weatherproofing since the windows were broken and tiles had slipped from the roof. This meant there were a whole host of issues that had to be fixed and unfortunately meant that the original features couldn’t be maintained. When we replastered the walls, we did so with the “rustic” plaster to ensure a traditional look and we have included many details and features that respect the original house and the period from when it was built. 😊

Great job! We were remodeling a house and every time we were hauling some piece of it out to the trash a neighbor would say "and that's why you bought this house, because you loved it so much."
@OurItalianDreamHouse
@OurItalianDreamHouse 11 месяцев назад
Hahaha, love that Well, I think that people who have not remodelled an old property have very little understanding for that no matter how much you love something, it's not worth keeping if it's in too bad condition. We would have loved to keep both the terracotta floors and the green terrazzo, but then we would have to live in a house without heating or electricity (since they put the tubes for all of that under the floor) and the outer wall would risk separating from the rest of the house and fall down on the neighbour. We also learnt along the way that it's so hard to judge the real state of things at the viewing. We absolutely overestimated the condition of the floors and plaster for example. Oh well, lesson learnt the hard way haha
@poodlegirl55
@poodlegirl55 11 месяцев назад
@@OurItalianDreamHouse Well if it were in great condition it probably would have been out of your price range is how I look at it. My husband and I have something we always say to each other when working "take out anything that isn't a nice house." We also repeat our neighbors words and laugh! We have remodeled eight houses in our 49 year old marriage, still doing one now in our 70's, it gets in your blood.

@OurItalianDreamHouse
@OurItalianDreamHouse Год назад
Thanks Diane. In our other videos you can follow the progress of each room/project. But this is also a great idea, maybe we do a more detailed before/after video 😊👍 the wall plaster is lime based render without pigment.

Why did you pull up the floor tiles? They looked in good condition. Seems like a rough job that could have been skipped.
@OurItalianDreamHouse
@OurItalianDreamHouse Год назад
We had to pull them up to remove the cement under which had sunk. Also, in Italy they put all plumbing and electricity under the floor and inside the walls so the job was absolutely necessary.

Well, in Italy it’s standard to put all pipes and electricity in the walls and under the floor so unfortunately everything needs to be ripped out in order to modernise the house and make it habitable.

when it is "abandoned" WHY did you pay any one money for it????? don't you know the laws? Some people ripped you off, lol.

Wouldn’t that be nice, a free house! 🤗 Unfortunately for us, abandoned refers to the fact that no one has lived in it or taken care of it, not the fact that no one owns it. Alas, we had to pay the previous owners to purchase it!

I totally agree. Would never have black walls. Green walls though, amazing! 👍

How wonderful to see two people working side by side to achieve their dream. Fantastic work. The grey colour on the walls looks disturbing though but other than that is perfect.

Amazing but I would have personally left the red bricks because it gives back the authenticity of these houses.

Thanks for your comment Elena. We wish we could have kept them too, but unfortunately they had to be removed to make reinforcements and ensure structural integrity.

I saw those beautiful terrazzo style tiles and I said to me what an exquisite taste they have. But then I saw the ugly gray painted kitchen walls and fronts of the cabinets and I lost hope. But still a big like for bringing back to life this old house.
