I moved countries from California to New Zealand one year ago with my wife ‪@CarrieRad‬ , and since then it's been a wild ride traveling the country, finding a homestead property and working our butts off to renovate this diamond in the rough. With most of the big DIY renovations done, it's finally time to move into our home, but things don't go as planned.

I have had several, "What the hell have I done?"moments. Keep going. De-cluttering is such a valuable experience. Changing your life completely is absolutely worth it and even if it isn't, you can always change again! You've got this!!!! Welcome to your new home❤️

I love the moments of introspection in your vlogs, they've become my favorite parts, thank you for sharing your personal journey. Even though it's a completely different life, I've been relating your content to my first year teaching this year. It has been something I have worked for for a while, setting up my classroom was a process, the job is harder than it may look to others, but also so rewarding. I feel like I've related to snipets of similar feelings in your journey. Anyways, congrats on your accomplishments and looking forward to next week:)

You might both like a FB post doing the rounds at the moment Engineers make bridges. Artists make paintings. Scientists make rockets. But teachers make them all. I come from a whanau of teachers and it really is a labour of love. Total respect 💕 I enjoy the journey, thoughts and accomplishments you both share. We have in common our humanity to live amazing, challenging, rewarding, tiring and sometimes painful lives. I am in a place of contemplation about next steps at my end and I am looking forward to some still moments over Christmas to catch my breath and gain clarity. May you enjoy a wonderful Christmas together with loved ones as you work through your next steps too. Bless.

I moved from New Zealand to Australia at the same time you moved to NZ! I've so enjoyed following your journey and seeing the parallels to mine. I had a moment about four months ago, when I was working a truely terrible job and just wanted to move home and throw it all in. But I found a new role which is incredible and just last week I got into an Australian university with a massive, life changing scholarship. It really was an Alchemist moment! Been a fan for years, I love seeing the way you capture my home country, keep moving forward!

I just love the mindset parts of your videos, Alex! It's such a treat every time! I've definitely experienced this as well and I think I saw a picture once of two people digging for diamonds - one giving up just before he'd find them and the other that keeps going finding them in the end. I try to remember that picture every time I'm feeling like giving up on something and I say to myself that I haven't found the gems yet, so I just need to keep digging. And surely enough, I found the diamonds when I managed to keep going. You mentioned it earlier in the video - patience is just such a an important part in any pursuit. And in this social media induced "instant gratification" times we are living in, patience has become one of the most important skills to develop.

You had a Marie Kondo moment. ‘Will this new life bring you joy‘ versus sentimental feelings for the old. It was likely one of the final stages of grieving your past life in the US and the new life in NZ.

I don’t have the gift of words like most of your followers, but I have a heart, and your journey has touched me from the first day I discovered your channel. You and your Carrie are an inspiration. If ever I have felt someone deserves a ‘Good as Gold Award’ or just a hand-up to lighten the load or whatever, you are that person/couple. Not once have I felt you have wanted help from anyone during your massive move from a life that was probably everyone’s dream life in the USA, although I’m sure a hand here and there would have been welcomed, but no, you have just got on with it, done the hard yards, and now, here you are, at that last mile of your marathon, with the finish line just ahead. I know you have probably wanted to do this on your own, but bro, if ever someone offers to help, take it. Clearly, the hard yards have all been tackled by just you and your beautiful Carrie and you are ready to look back and say, ‘We did this, all on our own’ but there’s a bit if a sad corner in my heart that says, ‘Where are all these Kiwi’s who are supposed to be so full of aroha and compassion and kindness and the good-old fashioned attitude like ‘Hey, these guys can do with some extra hands, let’s just rock on up and render some service, even take around some kai or a drink or something,’ …. I feel guilty myself, that I didn’t ‘put my money where my mouth is’ and done something, anything, but no use crying over spilled milk, right? You guys deserve the very best in life. You are so hard-working. I’ve never known anyone (except maybe my bros, uncles and people in my poor community in the bush who lived over 70 years ago who worked the land and their hands to the bone but had the help of community every step of the way), to work as hard as you. Thank you for your commitment to the land of your heritage. May the future be brighter (now that you have done the hard mahi), and may the remainder of your days in your amazing Wairarapa and Aotearoa, be filled with joy, love, laughter and peace, and lots of better weather and surf, sunshine, and great books to read. OIf this comment is deleted, I think I will understand why - all good! - but just so that know you (for what it’s worth) that you are admired so much for your amazing positive attitude throughout this journey, your unparallelled work ethic together with that ātaahua helpmate of yours who is equally amazing. Hope you are enjoying Kirihimete in your beautiful home surrounded by family and loved ones. All the best for 2022. My choice of KIWI OF THE YEAR … DECADE EVEN!! Arohanui.

Alex, you are not crazy, you are not alone. Recently I chose to leave my job as IT Service Desk and try to become a Web Developer. It has not been easy. Thoroughly enjoyed your videos. You are so correct in that life certainly has its ups and downs. And yes, there are many times when you feel like giving up. I think we have all felt that. But as you point out it is so important to remind yourself that it will all work out in the end. As a kiwi abroad my thoughts of returning home have swung wildly over the last year or so, but watching you and Carrie it has been pushing me more and more in that direction. Keep up the great work and always stay real.

The Alchemist is one of my favorite books as well. I read it just as I was starting my first business and it gave me a lot of courage and perspective on patience. Yes, I can totally relate to having moments of doubt. The funny thing is that the people around us who love us never doubt us. They are the ones who know we can finish the marathon and are cheering us on. So gather our confidence in you Alex and our well-wishes and hear everyone cheering you on right now. I’m really glad you made this channel and created space for your thoughts and reflections on life. They are so valuable. Whatever is coming next for you and your family is part of the greater journey. Sending you congratulations on a huge milestone completed!

Thanks so much Alex for your authenticity and wisdom. In my almost 70 years on the planet, there is one sure thing and that is to make friends with (as I tell my three children often) and that is CHANGE. It is the only constant in life we can truly rely on and the way to master it is always in mindfulness of its existence, wisdom and growth it gives us and to develop a true friendship with it. It all is great character building stuff and you have it in bucketfuls. Thank you for inspiring us all and taking us along your journey with Carrie and Lanka. Blessings and happy Christmas to you all. I hope NZ extends a warm welcome to your first Christmas here and may you have a nourishing year ahead.

We've moved cities, not countries this time, in May, but being pregnant I felt like I want a fresh start, not having anything in the house that seems even slightly unneccessary. And now having a newborn I still feel this way and I am happy when we can get rid of more stuff even though we keep needing more new stuff bc of the new lifestyle of our family of three!

Your concluding chat at the end of the video really resonated with me. As silly as it sounds i was almost brought to tears by the camera not recording because it was so symbolic of what you'd just been talking about, it almost felt like a gentle wink from the universe: "remember, things don't always go as planned but we keep moving." Sending positive vibes to you and your loved ones, be grateful that you've got the right mindset going into whatever challenges you are currently facing. Many don't have that perspective and it makes the challenges and heartbreaks so much harder. 💞🌈

I related to this video SO much. Thank you for being so honest and vulnerable. I purchased a house just about 3 months ago, but waited to move in until I was able to get everything painted and the floors switched over from carpet to hardwood. I’ve technically moved everything in and am finally at the unboxing and getting settled phase, and it’s taking me so long to get into the headspace to complete it. It’s so bizarre, because this is the goal line I’ve been working towards crossing for 3 months, and now that it’s finally here, I feel like I’m needing even more motivation to finish it out right. All that to say, I relate to how you were feeling and am grateful for your transparency. Hopefully this video will give me the motivation to power through and finish well :)

I’m so happy for you guys!… And, you’re not alone in feeling so many of the things that you mentioned to your video. Such as wondering if you made the right decision, feeling tired from the constant hiccups and unexpected curveballs that you have to dodge through, only to have to re-slodge through to get closer to your goal. But it’s my experience that’s part of life, and there are so many awesome highs, that fuel you through life, but as time goes on, you just get better about reactivating those good memories, and reminding yourself that the bad times will pass. It becomes quicker and faster every time you go through it. I’m 37 now, and have been so grateful that as each year has gone on, as much of a perfectionist as I used to be, I take the setbacks more easily in stride, and get giddy about the new things to come.. I love how you and your wife’s videos focus on both sides of the coin, because it’s a good reminder to all of us, that we’re not alone in the struggles and good things that we encounter in life. That we can do everything right, and still things may fall apart, but that there’s still better days ahead. Hang in there. Soon enough, this is going to feel like home, and you’re going to be so glad you made the choice! Warmest wishes to you and yours!

Loved the bit you shared in the truck when you were having your alchemist moment. Great book too! It's such a real part of life and I have found myself many times wanting to give up, especially when it came to doing things the way I wanted, which didn't fit into like you said societal conditions and how we are taught to "live". I have persevered because it was truly heart-based and I believe living from the heart takes a lot of courage. At the same time, the feeling of experiencing our capabilities and what we can become -- is truly for me synonymous with feeling alive.

Really enjoy it when you philosophise. Some of it really clicks with aspects of my life, but I especially like showing my kids (~10 years younger than you). Reassuring to see similar patterns of life’s ups and downs are universal. Hoping everything is ok with you and your family. The old nurse in me worries for health when I hear the way your were talking there at the end 🙏🏼

Every video you drop truth bombs and I love it. Your comments about the things you have and the emotional side of how you're living we're so true, and your comments about building dialogue and community on this page. You do that so well. Your interaction with your viewers is super impressive, I've enjoyed it personally and I am always impressed by how much of it I see in the comments. You're really trying to cultivate something here and I hope it is happening the way you want it to ^.^

Hi Alex, we have been following your and Carries' channels for some time now. Always enjoyed it so much. Especially since we moved from SA to Asturias, Spain in January this year. In this message today you are speaking directly to us. We are about to finalise everything, this last final step to make Spain our home and we are going through exactly the same emotions... we wish you all the best. X

Hey Annelize! We both appreciate your support. Having lived in Northern Spain for three years (1 in Galicia and 2 in Euskadi) I can tell you Asturias was without a doubt my favorite part of the Camino de Santiago. What a lovely corner of Europe. Where did you move? I remember surfing a great wave there called Rodiles, and loved walks in the Picos de Europa but never got really deep up in there. Need to come back!

@@AlexanderAyling thanks for your reply. The North of Spain truly is spectacular, hey? And yes, the beaches are breath taking! If all goes well, we will be running a small rural hotel in the Arriondas area soon. You guys should definately come and visit. So many hidden treasures in this part of the world. We also hope to do the camino soon. Anyways, thanks for your beautiful and inspiring videos. May you be so blessed in your new home. X

Alex, I'm sure we can all relate you your comments about our lives not moving forward in a straight line, but rather there being unexpected twists and turns throughout the journey. In these Covid times, nothing can be taken for granted and I find that it is far more satisfying just moving with the punches rather than hoping "this" wont happen, or "that" won't happen. I try to look at the whole experience as an adventure and look forward to future possibilities rather than fret about the things we can't do at the moment. History is being written just now and we are all a part of it. How exciting is that? Best wishes for a happy, summer Christmas to you, Carrie and Lanka and the other members of your growing homestead.

Everyone has had an alchemist moment and I think its scary when it happens because u start to think, did u make the right choice? But the thing is if we never move forward we never learn even if it's scary ass hell and makes us question our sanity. You aren't alone or crazy at all, you are experiencing normalcy and I appreciate your openness to share with us the truth of how you feel thank you Alex so much

Oh Alex, you and Carrie have done a superb job of transitioning and adapting to your new life in NZ. You both should be extremely proud of yourselves. You’ve both accomplished so much in the past 12 months. It will be so rewarding to have your own things in your new house / homestead and be able to stamp your personalities into the homestead. Life can be a merry go round but if you can be flexible ( I say roll with the punches) then life is somewhat easier to navigate. I’d like to wish you both a very Merry Christmas and I hope you will both enjoy the day with your family (on your Dad’s side) and be able to make new Christmas traditions and memories. Big aroha to you and Carrie. PS. The house is looking more like your home now, after all the hard work you’ve both put in and also seeing your personal belongings taking pride position. Take care and I hope your upcoming challenge / swerve ball isn’t too burdensome.

Over the past 14 years i have had to drastically change my thinking and mindset. I have a son with a disability that is not recognised so have struggled all 14 years to get him the supports he needs and make sure that his future is secured as much as it can be in case something happens to me. In that time i have had to live in survival mode and now we have supports i am at a total loss as to where to from here for me. So much of my life has been fighting for my son and not its time to start to explore living my life i am at a loss as to what to do now. I have given up so much and now have to start all over again and although it can be daunting at times it is also exciting as well.

Living for your (and Carrie’s) content right now. We are less than 2 weeks away from moving to Texas from Utah. On top of that, we’re moving from a townhouse with no yard, to a house on almost 4 acres. I’ve moved a TON in my life but for 99.9% of my entire adult life I’ve lived in Utah or Idaho. So it’s scary to move somewhere completely different in so many ways 😅 It’s also far from all our family. We do have one couple we know who lives there, so that’s something!

Having moved back from the UK after years of living there. I had so many moments of doubt... still do at times 3 years on... but NZ is a pretty amazing place to be, especially in the last 3 years. So I think that must be normal! Also wanting to declutter especially after this long lockdown. Stuff gets in the way of clarity.

I personally feel sometimes when we get close to accomplishing or acquiring something we want so badly, and have worked and dreamed about for so long, we become afraid of reaching the end of the journey and wonder if it will fulfill us in the way we have envisioned? We're afraid of disappointment! When these moments have come in my life, it's wonderful for a while to have what you've wanted but ultimately being happy or content and fulfilled is an inside job and as long as you realize nothing outside of you can permanently fulfill you, you can appreciate and enjoy the dreams which come true for you while they last but not be too attached because life continues on with its ups and downs and it's how you navigate them internally that makes all the difference! 😊

Congratulations on this huge step! So fun seeing the house become more and more homey. And I loved listening to your reflections! (I definitely want to get a copy of The Alchemist now). The experience you shared of being so close to the end and yet feeling a bit deflated, it resonates a lot. I'm currently in the process of applying to graduate school and with deadlines fast approaching, the process is nearly over and I feel like I should feel proud and excited and yet, it's like, the closer I get to this next chapter the more I'm gripping for a sense of certainty. So much doubt is coming in the form of 'are you sure this what you want? what are you not seeing? how will you know this is what you will want 20 years from now? etc etc. it's just a process that's really testing my sense of self-trust I think. Something I love about watching your journey is that I feel like you and Carrie have gotten very good at coping with the uncertainty of life and being comfortable with uncomfortable, as you said. And man, that is not an easy thing to do! I'd love to know, what do you think contributes to you having that mindset? What do you do to stay grounded even though life is inevitably uncertain all the time? Looking forward to next week's video, as always!
