In early October 2013 I passed the 10,000 fan milestone on my Facebook photography fan page. I held an open forum for questions from Facebookland and recorded my responses in this video. Had a blast making it and I hope you all enjoy it!

I read somewhere that you left the engineering field to pursue photography. How often (if ever) you ever regret doing that? How uncertain has it been financially (vice versa how rewarding has it been personally)? Has it been detrimental to any of your relationships (girlfriend, wife, family) being out in the field so much? How rewarding do you find the art show circuit (personally and financially.) I'm a dude with an engineering background who's going back and forth thinking about doing the same thing (but who hasn't yet jumped off the deep end.)

My son-in-law's photos are truly amazing. I asked him if he'd mind if I used them to print, frame, and sell for him. But now I'm thinking... I've never sold any of even my work so how do I go about putting a price on it. How do I make this jump from making art to selling? Do you think I'd have to do the art fairs or just have a gallery on line? And prices??? Any ideas? You kind of did the science end then jumped to the art and business end. How did you achieve it? Thanks! Sorry this is so long!

great answer about leaving your job. i'm a web developer myself in pleasanton. people have said i should do the photography thing full time, but with web design i learned that turning it into a job kinda took away the passion for me, and i don't want that to happen for me with photography, which is kinda my escape from the normal world. luckily, my company lets me take about 4 weeks per year off, and it pays really well, so that's enough for me at the moment. i DO wish i could travel a little more, maybe more like 6-8 weeks per year, but it's all a balance. i work work work, then make it a goal to take off at least a month total over that year and that keeps my wanderlust satiated. i also hate doing the "business stuff". i could make tutorials, write blogs, etc, but honestly i'm lazy and don't have the drive to do all that. i just wanna take shots, and if i happen to make a bit of money from it via prints, licenses, etc... that seems to be enough for me. i admire your bravery to quite your job and am glad you seem to be succeeding now with over half a million facebook fans. hope it's translating into dollars now :)

Steven Davis Hey Steve, I actually moved from Santa Cruz to Sonora (near Yosemite) in the summer of 2013. It's a kind of a pain being far from friends and culture, but I just had to be in the mountains.

haha. i see. yeah you're up there a lot. i was like "man, he's driving 4-5 hours each way to go there that often?" makes way more sense now. i bet cost of living up there is way less too.
