On April 21, 1967, the residents of Athens woke up in a new state. The military seized power. Arrests swept across the country. Rigid methods of government were supposed to be the key to economic success. For almost 10 years, the mythical bird Phoenix became the symbol of the country, which, although it suffers in flames, is reborn from fire itself. This time went down in history as the era of the dictatorship of the "black colonels".
The coming to power of the military in Greece was the result of a long-term confrontation between the left and right political forces, the roots of which go back to the 1920s and which did not stop even during the German occupation. The constitutional crisis in the country for two years contributed to the success of the rebel officers.
The organizers of the coup were Colonels Georgios Papadopoulos, Nikolaos Makarezos and General Stylianos Pattakos. About 100 tanks were introduced into the Greek capital, which occupied the most important points of the city's infrastructure, starting with the Ministry of Defense.
