Congratulations on that personal best catch. Yeah I've gotten nothing close. I will be out there next weekend so let's see. This is why I'm looking for any recent videos. Thanks for sharing
Awesome to see that one come from Juniper Point! Woo Buddy! Get wet on that fish! You deserved that big one for the time you have put in up there at Big Bear and for helping all the anglers out too! I remember I thought I had a good trout that time and brought in that carp! Doh!
OHHH MAN!!! What an awesome day! Had so much fun up there with ya. You definitely do deserve that fish out of there for all your hard work & dedication to the lake. You know that lake like the back of your hand. Watching you finesse that beast in like a pro, and then ‘SNAP’, that sound of the pole breaking will haunt me for a while. Haha. Thanks again for having me buddy, hope to do much more fishing with you in the future. CONGRATS!!
It was awesome to have you at the shoreline dude!! Well done yourself out there slayin' em'! You have many more fish ahead of you at BBL! That net sucked!! Did you happen to see those folks in the background getting ready to jump you for your fish in my video? LOL. I was rollin'
Wonderful video. Remember cold air flows downhill and is trapped. It accumulates & becomes progressively colder in the valleys and canyon bottoms. That is why Big Bear and Baldwin are so much colder than when you are driving along the hillside slopes, on the way up. The same is true down the backside where Lucerne can be as cold and sometimes even colder than BB. Wind also plays a role. A breeze mixes the air and does not allow it to settle, even though it may make it feel colder.
The interesting thing about that... is the lake itself can be 20* colder on the east side of the lake than the west side, same elevation. It's all about that air flow! Wind compresses air, flat bowls trap it. East big bear is the coldest, although not that cold compared to other spots I fish.
Nice fish! I have 2 fish in Big Bear over 5 pounds. And lost one I thought was in the 7 to 8 pound range. I usually troll when I go to Big Bear. Congrads on a great fish.
Yeah I love to troll on BBL,, but I don't have a boat up there so it's a rarity. Also I do pretty well along the shore there most the year. I wish it wasn't such a hassle to tube it there I would do that a lot
Should be decent fishin' @ Juniper on and off... the storm could change things of course, but should be good on that east side for the most part. Good luck out there!~
Great catch. Big Trout. Great fish. I loved when the net broke great action. I have fished that lake before but never a monster like that. Going to subscribe to your channel right now.
Man all I want is to catch a 5lbs+ trout in the west coats mountains, those are so beautiful. But the only way to get them is to keep trying. Awesome vids man👍
I'm glad you enjoy the cooking portions I really wish Id do more of those too!! I'll try to get some in ..in the near future. Not sure when hitting Big Bear next probably in a week or two
@@TroutWest I started trout fishing with power bait! I won’t stop using it! But now I’m into spoons and spinners, it is super effective and you can’t deny it feels so good to catch a fish off it, your work pays off
Nice rainbow, man. I'd brine and smoke that sucker. Quick tip though, if you take a small paperclip and bobber and hang it on your line between two guides, you will detect bites more easily. Bobber shoots up or drops down, depending where the fish swims with the bait.
I don't like putting things on the line or rod for bites.. I watch my line at all times. I'm aware of all the doo-dad tricks you can do for bite indicators but i'm just not a fan of it. I can see using reflective at night, but i only do a night fishing trip a few times a year. In general I'm watching lines... no issues detecting bites. Thanks for watchin'
Currently the roads are mostly perfect, there were some icy patches just before and just after snow valley. Melt during the day, then ices over night. Nothing dangerous though.
Thinking of going to big bear in a few weeks. Any tips? I do most my fishing saltwater and just started fishing freshwater this past summer so any advice is much appreciated! Type of bait, rig, gear?
6'6""-7'6" ultralight rod... 2-4 lb test. Look up a sliding egg sinker setup on Google image. Use a 2-3 ft leader. Your choice of number 16 treble hooks with powerbait or number 12 mosquito hook with gulp egg. Important to use scent. Try bang garlic spray. Fish the east side of the lake....pro tip is to make sure if you use powerbait to roll debate like a worm and keep it small no bigger than 1 inch. I prefer the gulp egg on a mosquito hook method.
Amazing catch!! I love fishing big bear. Hoping to get out there this winter. If you take invites I'd be happy to join and even chauffeur. Is there a power egg color or scent you would suggest? How many do you put on a. hook?
Thanks for posting up I'm glad you enjoyed the video... We do offer invites anybody's welcome to join us when we head up. Email roadtripvidz@gmail.com with some contact information. typically use only one egg on the hook and less I'm looking for even more visibility... I add sent to all of the eggs I cast out I usually add bang garlic spray or a custom dip I made.
Hey man, I don't know if you'll be able to get to this or not... but where do you park during the snow? Assuming the roads are plowed and there's no parking at Juniper.
That's a great question and it's really hard to park during the winter because of the big snow Banks created by the plows. you have to just look for areas where you can fit a car as long as you're parked off the highway and away from where I plow needs to go you will be fine. A lot of locals and tourist is still punch holes in the snow bank along the north side to find spots. there is a strong chance you will have to walk a little bit farther to your actual fishing spot because of where you park. currently the snow has all but a hundred percent in melted along the North shore except in a few areas so you will be good for the next two to three weeks probably unless another cold storm comes in. The next storm is supposed to be warm again not much snow.
Have you fished fisherman's retreat in Redlands? I pull a 8lbs out of there this past winter i wont there jackpot for biggest fish on the last day for the Weigh-in's they said there are up to 13 lbs in the lake still to this day
Excellent man...you had me nervous for you...I've had those cheap nets break on me too...sweet move getting wet. What time of day did you catch that beast? Again well done. My Best, Ray
Are you using barbed bait hooks for catch and release? Isn't that not allowed and all but guarantees the fish will die when you rip the hook out and then release it.
These are single Barb mosquito hooks.. being more gentle on the fish. This is why I use mosquito as opposed to treble. If you watch my channel you will see most of the fish the hooks are easily removed because the fish does not swallow the bait. In the case the fish swallows the bait, I remove the bait with pliers and release the fish with the hook. I use non painted hooks which will rust out in about a week. No it is not illegal to fish with barbed hooks and release fish. Also, Big Bear Lake does not have a barbless artificial restriction. While it is possible that releasing a fish after being caught will die that is possible regardless of the hook used, as some fish may die simply from the fatigue of being caught or improper handling of the fish once it is caught. unlike keeping a limit of 5 a 100 percent of that limit will die as opposed to a very small portion of the fish i release will die. In the thousands of fish I have caught in the last year I have only kept 2. In The last 5 years I might have kept five total. That's probably 10000 fish I have caught and released in that span and kept five think about that.
Why dont the trout like lures @ big bear , I used to use lures in the early 2000's but I never touch it since now I always use bait because rainbows like the smell of such and such.
That's a very good question I don't think it's that they don't like lures but I do think the fish habitat there can create a feeding pattern that makes the trout prefer a bait over a lure. I Fish 90% spoons when I'm on the water.. but I have noticed over the years the spoon bite at Big Bear has been less and less active. Regardless of the water im fishing I will always use the most effective method... Whatever gets em is what I have out there. I do remember going there and throwing spoons and catching a couple hundred a day at Big Bear though it's been awhile since the bite with lures has gone wide open. I'll be up there again very soon I'm thinking it could happen then
@@TroutWest i bet competition for lures and loner fish on bait. Trout have really good smell and rather bite it; a trout tht gets bit on a lure are the ones that are chasing other trout and are very agressive torwards other fish. thats why they go around sometimes and nip at eachother
@@shatter2608 yeah I find thatthe spoon bite is better in southern California in the spring when there are bait fish in the water.. tuning the trout on to eating fish pattern Bait. Most lakes other than big bear spoons are much better than baits, but at BBL they can be picky.
It wasn't easy! I've lost a lot of fish before this one smaller to learn how to get this one in on 2lb. It's a combination of rod length,Rod being UL,Reel being good quality, drag set right and not horsing him in. I do a lot of salmon fishing so that helps you learn patience on hard fighting fish. I only "Lift" to make ground on the fish, I don't just reel. When the fish pauses on it's fight, I lift up then reel down fast to gain line. IF it fights, I let it run but keep tension
Urban Outdoorsman I see this line a lot all over RU-vid. My wife and I are backpackers. And as soon as this social thing gets lifted 20lakes basin is where I’m going first ! I’m a saltwater fisherman chasing stripers. So chasing trout is my next species so I’m building my trout Arsenal. Any tips advice I would appreciate it
