I have to defend the air fryer ... as someone who is only ever cooking for one person, it's so much more economical to use the air fryer instead of having the whole oven on to heat up e.g. a single veggie burger, one bowl of baked oats. It cooks things so much more quickly too and the texture of things is way superior. Mine is also a combo one that has bake, pressure cook, steam, saute etc functions so it's definitely multi functional and not a waste of space, I use it every day! I still live at home but I know when I eventually move out I won't bother buying an oven if the house doesn't already have one, my air fryer will be all I need!

But like if you're cooking an actual meal, like you're not just having rice, but you're having rice, and veg, and protein, I mean you can't steam your rice, and sautee your vegetables, and fry your tofu in the fryer at the same time. So... It's more practical to have a stove/oven, since you can do more than one thing with it at the same time......... Also, your air fryer likely will break down a lot faster than a stove. I mean... Be realistic here.

Yes I came here to say in the defence of ppl with airfryers ( dont have one myself as we dont have the room( in a cost of living crisis ppl are buying them because its too expensive to put the oven on. I no longer buy or eat anything that has to be cooked in an oven which is sad because so many things I can't eat anymore
@MissieK
@MissieK 7 месяцев назад
@@zenleeparadiseto turn on one or two stove tops and the oven each day will cost more and in many cases creates extra food that might end up in trash. it might not be useful to you of course but for people who live alone, it has solved many issues that they had. It's a waste of energy to turn on the entire oven for one piece of veggie burger when it can be done in the frier in less than 7 minutes with a side of fries

as someone who grew up in a household that bakes a lot keeping essentials like flour, sugar and cocoa in airtight containers is pretty important to keep it contained (the paper bags can spill/leak since it's so fine) and also to keep bugs out (the amount of time we've had to throw out flour due to bugs getting in). But buying a bunch of containers just to put sealed packaged snacks in that already come in packaging... why

I love a labeled and containered pantry. I use upcycled jars for my ingredients and use painter's tape for the labels so they can be changed easily as the jars empty out. I switched to keeping everything in glass after I got hit by pantry beetles, their little mandibles can't get through glass.

Same, I understand that many people do these only for aesthetics or something, I choose containers that are really fit for the job - airtight and such. Had insects in the pantry way too many times because of items not being properly sealed and storaged (they even got through original packaging of something that has not been opened yet). I also use a lot of upcycled glass jars.

Overall I think that no item is a "must have" for everyone, but many items are a must have for someone! For example as someone with ADHD, putting my food into clear containers where I can see the contents and not the distracting labels greatly increases my ability to feed myself while reducing my stress and the amount of food I waste, so for me clear containers are a "must have". Someone else though might find it unnecessary and annoying to move their food into another container just for the visual appeal. It's important to think about what really makes a significant positive impact in your life, and avoid purchasing things that don't just because they're novel and because an influencer said you should.
@Killjoy_Mel

Huh. I have ADHD too but all my containers end up collecting dust and I never eat the food in the clear containers because then I have to wash them too. A knife and a pan and a pot and a submersion mixer, and original packaging and I'm good. The time I spend on putting things in and taking out of a clear container, or cleaning the kitchen gadgets I could all spend on some quick knife work and tossing them on the pan or in the oven.

As someone who lives in the UK in a damp block of flats (70s and someone literally flooded their flat while it was uninhabited) it is soooo much better to have glass jars over paper packing. It keeps certain products a lot more dry. I also have a dehumidifier that I use regularly.

I gotta defend the Airfryer as well! I purchased it almost 4 years ago and it's one of my most used kitchen devices. I use it for everything, baking tofu, making fries (from real cut potatoes, I dot buy frozen fries from the store), bake veggies, rolls, toast my bread, make cooked rice crispy and heat it up, I bake sliced apples inside and let them caramalise a bit for my porridge, etc etc. The Airfryer is soo versatile to me and I very rarely use my oven. Also love my Instantpot which I use every week.

I don't have the weird silicone grease floppy thing, but I do have a grease guard, which is a circle of metal mesh (to let steam escape) with a handle attached, and it helps yes keep the counters clean but also keeps the grease pops from hitting me or nearby people when I'm cooking. I don't use it as often as I should but it's a life saver when I do need it, and definitely more useful and with a longer life span than that silicone funnel thing

Agreeing so hard… I’ve always been a bit of a hardass about this, but I’ve been cooking since I was eight and you really only need a knife or two, a couple of bowls, and a wooden spoon or two. A friend of mine once gave me a whisk as a gift because she was fed up with hearing me declare, “A fork does the same thing!!” I still mostly use the fork.

The knife or regular scissor is actually easier to use if you have hand issues like arthritis or reduced grip strength. It's easier to cut with a SHARP knife or scissor and you can continuously sharpen these with a whetstone or have them sharpened by someone else. The special single-purpose scissor will get dull quickly and make it so hard to cut the vegetables and at some point just mash them and then you have to clean out the stuck bits.

I laughed when you brought up the point of decanting food items into containers… Where the heck do we put the remainder? I never could understand this. And I cut my carrot peeling time by 100%… I don’t peel them… Scrub them and save the nutrients! As for any of the items listed, if I have them, only the air fryer… And have to agree minimal usage/too friggin’ big

Hi Gittemary ❤ THE FELLOW OUTRAGE I FELT AT THAT PEELER IN THE OPENING! 😂 Also, from experience, that multi-bladed scissors is indeed so difficult to clean. As a kid, my kitchen chore was to quickly chop small amounts of herbs in a cup with normal scissors - though I would recommend using extremely sturdy cups like from metal, because i once broke a glass with the enthusiastic cutting 😅 Also, thank you so much for saying multiple times in the first half that mindful usage and accessibility is important to take into account for certain products. I had some moments where I was feeling a bit apprehensive because yeah, I do have knives, cloths, and usually should also have the time, energy and love for being in the kitchen, I love to cook! But the trendy "must-haves" that I sometimes feel a bit guilty about DO help me so, so much with keeping me healthier and happy on a weekly basis: - my mini-airfryer (second-hand through my mom 🎉) actually fits in my student's studio while an oven doesn't - and I miss ovens INTENSELY, but at least I can bake small cakes to treat myself, and experiment with making single-portions of oven dishes (lasagna, gratin, veggies and their various cook time, snacks...) - the spiralizer, thankfully designed a bit like an upsized, two-sided pencil sharpener and thus stored in a drawer, helps me with my veggie-intake (zoodles with ALL the long pastas and noodles! I love how I can spiral both linguini and zoodles onto a fork and pick up noodles and zoodles with chopsticks in one bite!) - when I don't have the energy to vaccuum-sweep-clean everything, I can at least get the worst with the (second-)hand vaccuum in a really short and efficient time - I don't have the mandolin slicer box myxelf, but I've seen tips on making full salads for one, reducing on cutting and cleaning time since a single portion can be made and eaten straight from the container. It would be such a boon when ADHD makes every five step recipe look like a 15-step one (since i'll have to grab the knife from the drawer and the cutting board from the cupboard and clean the cucumber and the each tomato and each bottle for the dressing is in a different cupboard or drawer, etc etc etc, and then i STILL have to wash all the things...) Thanks again for always making it a point that it's not about feeling guilty that I can't do more, but that it's about making it sustainable, low waste and mindful where I can ❤❤❤

I think a lot of these for certain people are accessibility tools. I know you mentioned disabilities with the mandolin, but also having see-through containers is AWESOME for people with ADHD. If I don’t decant, I’ll never remember to actively look to see how much I have left, but I can easily inactively see how much is left. I’m okay with having double storage just so that I can see how much I have left. As for the air fryer, as a single person with binge eating disorder, it’s MUCH easier for me to control what and how much I’m eating without heating up my whole oven. I can throw a chunk of cookie dough in my oven and having only one cookie available keeps me from eating a massive plate of cookies that I’ll be more inclined to eat.
@Killjoy_Mel

I have ADHD. The sheer fussiness of decanting and playing fridge tetris, and thinking how to store all that, frankly, crap, only for me to not even eat decanted stuff because I can't be bothered with the maintenance and mess, is simply giving myself more stuff to worry about, which leads to me not eating at all. The less stuff I have and the fewer moves I have to make, the better. I hate it when I'm cooking and now there's containers and lids and cling film everywhere that I have to wash and clean and store. But then I know my way around a kitchen so I can whip a good meal up with everything and anything so running out of one ingredient suddenly is not a tragedy.

10:43 - of course you peel carrots into a peelings pot that you keep in the freezer, ready to make vegetable stock at a later date, right Gittemary? ;-) In a small defence of air fryers... Due to finances/being a bit lazy, we've not had a cooker/oven for over a year (thanks to very slowly renovating our kitchen), and relying on a single induction hob plus a Ninja Foodi (bought 2nd hand from eBay). As we don't have an oven or microwave, the Ninja Foodi has been great for us, because it allows us to eat oven-cooked dishes, as well as being a grill/broiler, steamer, pressure cooker, slow cooker, and capable of open-top sauté style cooking (useful if our single induction hob is occupied). I also believe, being a 2 person household, the device uses less energy than if we were to use an oven for the same smallish portions (usually cook 4 portions so we also have leftovers for the next day). So if your household is small and you have enough worktop space, I'd recommend an air fryer that is multifunctional.

I've actually bought a manual veggie spiraler about 10 years ago. It's basically a giant pencil sharpener with julienne inserts on the blade. Very minimalistic, lives in our cutlery drawer and is mainly used in summer to spiral zucchini to mix 1:1 with spaghetti to get more veggies into my kid and myself. Or so I tell myself. Actually 80% of this thing's purpose is the fun of sharpening all kinds of edible roots, small potatoes or whatever is spirable. And the only spirals I use as they come out of it are the zucchini noodles. All others a chopped up in smaller bits and tossed into salads or cooked. Is it essential? No. Would I buy it again? Probably not. Would I give it away? No way!

I love airfryer! It is a game changer for us. It does not only fry, but also grills meat like fish and chicken breast filet and a lot faster and economical than traditional oven. As for food containers.. they've been around for decades and I didn't get the point in using them even back 30 years ago.. seasoning containers, flour jars.. they take up precious space and deprive you of info on expiration date and exact content. Then you go and buy stickers to mark them which is a total waste of time.

Yuuuup. I can't wrap my ADHD mind around the supposed convenience of decanting. It's a storage and cleaning and decanting nightmare and I won't even know how close or how far past an expiration date it all is. I prefer my stuff in their original packaging with info on it to save time and product. The less stuff I have as an ADHD the less paralyzed I am. Every ADHD has different needs but when your brain is all about having to find shortcuts, executive dysfunction and forgetting info, the decanting into containers isn't making life easier, it's adding several more steps I just cannot be arsed to take.

@Killjoy_Mel it does need to be cleaned but when the pieces are minimal and you enjoy using it the cleaning is worth it to me. I can see where just using a knife is a preferred choice to some. The way to tell you actually enjoying having a kitchen gadget is when you go away on holiday for an extended time without them and actually do miss having them. Now if I went on holiday and didn't miss something when I was gone.. or even enjoyed using a knife more I would 100% say "let it collect dust".

Lol…haven’t made it through this entire video yet but had to stop and comment about the handheld vacuum. I requested one for Christmas because I have a glass top table and no matter how careful I am wiping up crumbs with my cloth, I get crumbs stuck between the tabletop and the table base and the glass top is too heavy for me to lift safely on my own to get to the crumbs so now with my handheld, I can suck up these little crumbs that are really gross to have on the daily but especially when guests come over. So, it has been very handy and helpful and I use it daily; that said, I don’t know how long this little guy will last and if it doesn’t, then I most certainly will have to question whether it is worth getting another. I wish things were built to last! Fortunately, my husband can usually bring a broken piece of electronics back to life :)

@jello9739 6 месяцев назад
@@Gittemary I would agree with you it is not a MUST HAVE product, I just wouldn't go so far to say it's absolutely useless. The demonstrations I've seen using it have been from dieticians who are showing easy balanced salad recipes, showing how eating vegetables can be fun and easy and I believe that is a really important message to tell people. Of course you can just use a knife but when you have no motivation, time, or patience to finely dice something it can be tempting to just not eat it. As for cleaning I'd say it looks like it can just be tapped into the sink to get rid of large chunks and then put in the dishwasher. I'd say it's one of those products that if you don't have a use for it then don't buy it but if it will help your everyday life then there is no shame in investing (maybe even finding secondhand) and taking care of it. I love your content though I didn't mean for this to come across as hateful or anything :)

Yes, please make this a series ❤ Thank you for sharing! I do have a cutter/mandolin-thing, and I bought it because I am disabled, and it really needs strength in my arms for especially bell peppers, and I can’t do it. I am using crutches and have good strength too, but not a chance. I even put it on the floor 🤣🤣🙈 I do use the shredder blade everyday though for my carrots I use in my oatmeal. I peel my carrots over the food waste container, no issues there. I have thought about an air fryer since I am living alone and is disabled, but I don’t want to sacrifice my counter space for it. I don’t use oil to cook either, so it will not “save” the fat for me either. I can recommend silicone or similar ice cubes. I always have it in my freezer. They can freeze again and again and don’t water down your drink either. I love it in the summer time, and is very easy to find in the spring and summer months here in Norway. Thanks for sharing! Love from Johanne, Norway 🇳🇴

I use our airfryer all of the time. With the price of energy in the UK, we can’t afford to turn on the main oven and wait for it to heat up, just to cook food for 2 people. I cook veg in a steamer on the hob so only use 1 ring. It’s all about cutting costs and using less energy.

an air fryer is actually a small convection oven. it is really good at roasted a small amount of food more quickly than putting it in the oven (and tbh probably using less energy) than the entire oven. i use it a lot for roasting vegetables and it makes a mean chicken wing. we also use a kitchen shears a lot. ok the multiple blade thing is stupid, but we use the kitchen shears a lot and in ways differently than knives.

I've had a handheld vacuum cleaner for about 4 years? I really like it for the bathroom or for the thin strip between my bed and the wall (in front of my nightstand), small areas where it's inconvenient to maneuver a broom or mop, and that accumulate a lot of hair. I mean I would never call it a must-have, there are obviously other ways of cleaning, but I like having it

I have had two of the mandolin type crap and broke both within a few uses because of the pressure needed to get it to cut being more than the mandolin could take. I did replace part of the function with an old solid metal grater set attachment for my KitchenAid and love it.
@MaesRuth
@MaesRuth 7 месяцев назад
Totally agree with the gimmicky thing. You really have to think of rhe function and use thing. I do a mandolin, but that is because i do canning and dehydrating. When i go to do a batch im slicing up roughly 5 lbs at least of something at a time. But daily use it doesn't get used, a knife does. The mandolin is kept with the preserving equipment. So really unless someone is slicing up massive amounts at a time then it really is silly.

I loved the video and appreciated the shared outrage over some of the products. For me the issue isn't always the existence of these products, but rather the "must have" label. What might be helpful for one person might be completely useless to another! Personally I love a mandolin for chopping onions, as I'm VERY sensitive to them and if I use a knife I cry so much that I have often cut myself from not being able to see what I'm doing 😖

Sweetie, you can make much more in an airfryer than fries!! You can watch channels on RU-vid giving you recipes. I would love a glass one because of my Teflon allergy. And yes, I have an oven and microwave too. - I indeed can not use some things because I have not much strenght!! Even with a knife I struggle some times ;-( Some things are stupid and unnecessary, that's true! - The handheld vacuum cleaner could be handy, like for my son his bed, he tosses and turns a lot (due to the constant pain) and sleeps in short socks in the winter, because of the friction they (and his pyjamas) often release lint and then a small vacuum cleaner is a handy thing! Love from an old (rebel) Pinkie

I own most of these products and I never wanted them, lol. My husband seems to be be addicted to buying these weird things and since I keep complaining about it, he now does it in secret 😅. I think we're only missing the carrot peeler and the soda icer. But instead he got himself a thing to microwave eggs in. I do use the airfryer, the "multiscissors", and the hand-held vacuum occasionally. It's easier to suck stuff out of cracks with it. I don't use anything else from this list of useless things.

Idk about other people but when I fry anything I have to clean everything because the grease travels. It goes up to the upper cabinets both right above and around the kitchen, it also covers the lower cabinets across the kitchen. I mean think about how gross restaurant kitchens are from frying, that happens at home too. Don't believe me? Go look at the top of your cabinets above your stove, if there's a layer of dust stuck to the cabinet, it's stuck to the grease.

I will defend the little onion dicer (it's the one where you pull the string and it cuts up the onion). It is so much easier to get myself to cook if I know I don't have to chop an onion with a knife. And since I live next to the balkans, it is impossible to cook without onions 😅

To explain the "you don't need to touch the food!" - to me, this is really beneficial for neurodivergent people. Some textures drive me INSANE, and food often is wet, sticky, slimy, grainy... I deal with it by washing my hands a million times (the autism + OCD bicycle babyyy) - which makes me not want to prep food. So, while it may seem excessive, it's also an accessibility device for people who seem abled but have invisible disabilities! Also - basket air fryers seem super inconvenient to me, but I loooove my countertop air fryer oven. Mini convection oven = way less energy than a whole oven if you're only cooking for one or 2 people. Much more manageable to me than a big oven for whatever reason 😅 get one used and stay away from the basket ones IMO.

My grandma is 90 bless her and she loves to get me kitchen things. the past couple years I’ve been explaining what a minimalist is and that I prefer not to have gifts but would rather spend time with her or maybe a plant is fine lol. she gave me a spiralizer once, just one of the small $8 ones so it doesn’t take up much space but I believe I used it once in 3 years. whenever I see it in the draw I think of yea I have that thing but no I’d rather reach for my Japanese carbon steel knife. 🌱💚

This is why I only buy gadget-y things second-hand. When I lived somewhere without a stove, I used a rice cooker sometimes. Moved to a place with a stove and realized I never use the rice cooker, it's just as easy for me to make it on the stove. If you're someone who makes rice every single day, it might totally be worth it! But it wasn't for me. My mom uses her insta-pot frequently; I know myself, and I would never use one. If my parents had a toaster oven, I don't think anyone would ever use it. But I don't have AC at my place, so it's nice to have a tiny oven in the summer to keep from heating the whole kitchen. Never assume you need something just because it's the latest craze. If you want to try a thing out, when possible, buy it used (or borrow one). And if you find you're not using a thing, put it in your local Buy Nothing group! There's nothing sadder then a product not being used for the thing it was made for. Haven't used that veggie spiralizer in 2 years? Instead of feeling guilty for buying it, gift it to someone who will actually use it, and now you're both happy! ❤

I only decant food and liquids into other containers if they fill it with nothing left over. The only time I'm shuffling extra is when I go grocery shopping and need the next one to fill the container. I have 3 boys (1 man 2 Littles) and they go through cereal like mad so I get bulk adhd dump it into an extra large container. Same for flour and sugar. I got the large containers to mitigate that.

I have a mini vacuum for cleaning out my rabbit enclosure and sucking up hay and dried poops from the area around the bin - it charges from usb and runs for 15 mins - perfect for my needs, but completely pointless if i didnt have pets that needed space vacuuming every day =) The kitchen roll holder and your reaction (justifiably) made me laugh so much. The fry wall will also need cleaning (which i presume will use a cloth or sponge) :P I hate the idea of washing the mandoline slice slides and such - or the inside of a container or the multi-blade options - how p***ed off will i get trying to clean the darn thing!

I do love my air fryer. I'm wondering if yours just doesn't work as well as mine. That being said I don't own a microwave or toaster oven so my air fryer serves those purposes as well. We have a big family and a small fridge and I got tired of the amount of space my husband's sparkling water habit was taking up in our fridge and those plastic drink can dispensers that I found at the thrift store can hold more cans while taking up less real estate in my fridge and I love them! We do use them daily lol. I feel like the can holder in the fridge is still better than that instant can cooler. I am deceased.

3:52 I have to slightly disagree on some of the container and dispenser stuff. Some of us who suffer from object permanence need to be able to see the foods in the fridge/counter/cabinets. I have a soda can dispenser because stacking the soda cans on the shelf of my fridge or in the door was taking up too much space. Also, the boxes that the cans came in would fall apart if they weren't opened carefully.
