That's why I questioned it. I mean, I could understand What Dreams May Come or Dead Poet's Society or Good Morning Vietnam but neither of those films are good and "playing a serial killer" shouldn't automatically mean you earned an Oscar.

Marlon Brando and Robert Deniro deserved their Best Actor Oscars for the exact same films... So from that perspective, no he shouldn't have given the two Actors playing his character's father both smashed it out of the park.

@colliric
@colliric 6 лет назад
I think Pacino should have won best Actor for the second part. Deniro won supporting actor now that I remember it. Still his part was the best, and matching Brando with his own Oscar winning performance in a younger version of the same role was fitting. But yeah, if they didn't "give"(lol because he didn't accept it personally) Brando that Oscar I would have been pissed. His performance as Vito Corleone was iconic and masterful. He was the title character of the first film after all. If he wasn't competing against and overshadowed by superior performances from the exact same films, you might have been on to something.

I can't sit and read 400+ comments but the fact that Denzel Washington wasnt mentioned on this list is a major oversight. He won for Training Day but look how he killed it in so many other films prior. Malcolm X, John Q, and more.
@eLiFILMSinc
@eLiFILMSinc 6 лет назад
Who was he up against in the years he lost?
@TheBraunMachine2011
@TheBraunMachine2011 6 лет назад
I agree, and for most, he honestly thought to be a shoo-in that year, same for RDJ for Chaplin, everyone knew it was coming down to those two but it ended up being pacino for scent of a woman. I think that Oscar was for the many performances from pacino that he had lost out on. There's been many upsets like that one, same thing happened with MCD (Green Mile) & Haley Joel Osment (Sixth Sense) and Michael Caine won it. They usually give it to a senior actor when it seems to be a hard choice. Alan Arkin beating out Eddie Murphy (Dreamgirls) & Djmon Hounsou (Blood Diamond) is another one. I do agree, Denzel killed it in his other films, I thought he'd win for The Hurricane but Crowe beat him out for Gladiator, some thought that Crowe would've won for A Beautiful Mind but his incident cost them the Oscar and they gave it to Denzel, who some thought was due for one after The Hurricane performance and how good he was in Training Day. I do think he should've been nominated for John Q. His speech to his son hands down should've won him an Oscar.
@stephanierednour8590

thatdemoguy he won for glory also best supporting. I believe flight was one of his very best I don't know who won that year.
@starshake8998
@starshake8998 3 года назад
Agreed. And while it's true that Washington's performance in Training Day was a tour de force, I found it pretty offensive that an actor known for so many dignified and heroic roles (like Steve Biko and Malcolm X) wasn't recognized for his consistently amazing acting until he played an evil, dirty cop who is graphically, excessively executed at the end. The snuff film quality of it was dusturbing. I couldn't help but feel the Academy was rewarding him just as much for reinforcing the "white people good, black people bad" stereotype as for his superb performance. If he'd already won for any number of his other outstanding performances, it wouldn't have felt so strange.

Academy friendly doesn't mean it can't win in other categories (Mad Max won oscars... for things like costume design and sound editing), just that it won't win in 'the big three' = Best Picture, Actor, Actress.

Marcia Gay Hardon (Pollock) "Outstanding Actress In A SUPPORTING Role" for the year 2000! Jennifer would NOT have been nominated for Lead (like Ellen Burstyn that year, Julia Roberts slightly Robbed her even though I love Erin Brockovich) but for "Supporting" since she was ONE of the Leads but not what some may consider the MAIN in "Requiem"! But yes I agree Ellen and Jennifer were and STILL are BOTH incredible and amazing to watch and still have OSCARS on their mantle (1974's Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore/Lead Actress) and (2001's A Beautiful Mind/Supporting) just Marcia and Julia got the spotlight that particular specific night!

Going a bit further back in time... Humphrey Bogart won an Oscar for The African Queen, which is a lovely film and a good performance in its own right. But it was widely believed at the time that the award was more of a belated acknowledgement for his impeccable performance in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre the previous year. Henry Fonda won for On Golden Pond (which admittedly I haven't seen) but NOT for The Grapes of Wrath. Coincidentally the year Fonda was nominated for TGoW, James Stewart won for The Philadelphia Story - he should've won for It's a Wonderful Life instead, or even Vertigo (which he wasn't nominated for). Sidney Poitier won for Lillies of the Field but wasn't even nominated for In the Heat of the Night.

Personally, I think that the following two actors should be included in such a list. (1) PAUL NEWMAN. He later won for 'The Color of Money', but sheesh, he was not only passed over for 'Cool Hand Luke' -- unbelievable! -- but also in 'The Hustler', 'The Sting' and *other* great films. (2) NATALIE PORTMAN. She later won for 'Black Swan' but holy cow was she amazing when very young in 'The Professional'. On Christian Bale who, I think, deserves three or four Oscars by now(!), the video omitted citing 'The Machinist', where Bale's absolutely stunning performance matches the level of his performance in 'American Psycho' although in an entirely different character. Further, it is an omission not to mention his performance, as a youth, in 'Empire of the Sun'. Spielberg hung an entire movie on this young, young talent, and Bale knocked it out of the park. Similarly, on DiCaprio, his role in 'The Basketball Diaries' was not mentioned in the video even though he, too, was so young even as he fully inhabited the hellish depths to which heroin addition can take a person. I was happy that 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape' was mentioned in the video since DiCaprio's performance in it was absolutely brilliant, but way back then he was also brilliant in 'The Basketball Diaries'. It's hard to believe the talent and obvious dedication to craft that Portman, Bale, and DiCaprio showed so early.

I was thinking of starting a RU-vid Channel where I review films that won Oscars and do seperate videos on "Oscar Reshufflings", where I reassign Oscars to films that have objectively stood the test of time for that quality (e.g. Rear Window for it's film editing and cinematography, The Truman Show for Best Actor and The Dark Knight for Best Picture, Best Director etc.). In my opinion the Oscars have potential for being awards that will tell future generations what the best films of the year are but they are always bogged down by rewarding whatever's popular, whatever ticks certain boxes for them and whatever has the best advertising or promotional campaigning. If I had the time I would most likely do that. Any thoughts?
