Ni no Kuni 2. Persona 5 (if Royal is cheap, that instead) Yakuza like a dragon If Valkyria Chronicles 1 remaster or 4 is cheap physical. I only have the first remaster from release day. But All those should be like $20-$40 USD max, since in Canada Ni no Kuni 2 was $20, Persona 5 OG $20, Like a dragon $49.99 on ps5 and $52 on PS4, Valkyria I think was like $20 last I saw its price but that was years ago. Though Sega game prices aren't like Koei, they tend to hold prices for a good bit
Yeah the game combined my love for old school ATB Final Fantasy like games and mostly snowy Terrain. Such a good game, story and chars were also solid but the music was great.
Blue Reflection: Second Light is between $40-60 right now, but I expect that to go up over the next couple of years. The first game is already over $100 I believe. If you like magical girls and a battle against a supernatural threat, grounded by day-to-day living and realistic character interactions, with great writing and an amazing artcore soundtrack, this is the game to get. You don't even need to play the first game, and this one is better anyway.

Scarlet Nexus is super fun. I loved stacking the abilities and just seeing what kinda crazy combos I could come up with. I love both stories it's truly wonderful
I'd also say Ni No Kini 1/2, the .Hack Last Recode collection, Digimon Story Cybersleuth and World, and Witch and the Hundred knight 1/2 all belong on this list as well! Mad respect for including 13 Sentinels and Tales of Berseria. Played them last year and they're definitely some of my favorite games of all time now. Gonna check the rest of the list, Scarlet Nexus caught my eye!
Berseria is very good. It was always on top for me besides Vesperia. Played through Scarlet Nexus and I can only recommend it. The story is so good and well made up until the end.
Loved seeing someone else, besides me, enjoy Shining Resonance Refrain. I'm a huge fan of the Shining series, after all it was Shining Force I & II that got me into turn based JRPGs to begin with. Having played every entry, I was taken aback by this game but soon fell in love with it. Like you said, it's a very niche title, but one that paid off for me!
I beat Nier Automata and Nier Replicant when they came out and my goodness they're so amazing, absolutely perfect games. Great vid too, liked and subscribed. I can sense great things in the future for you Hallowed!
Omega Quintet is a great turn based JRPG if you don't mind your characters being Idols or have a problem with their dresses getting destroyed during combat.

@@bsinky Depends on how much you like it, but both routes reveal stuff that the others doesn't. 2/3 of the story are roughly completely different, though most plot revelations are shared between both. I recommend Kasane because her story is better told and the revelations that happen in both routes are far better paced in her route. She also a more interesting character and her team has a more interesting dynamic all around.
@@Amaror2 many people are telling this but I would rather recommend how it was planned afaik. Yuitos route first is more "chaotic and mysterious" without trying to spoiler it and afterwards Kasanes route felt like a revelation to everything considering both routes.
Absolutely loved 13 sentinels. Bought it on day of release because the 2D work looked so damn clean I had to support it but damn did the story/characters/music and overall world and style impress the hell outta me. That ending further cements it as one of my favorite ps4 games.
Awesome video and list! I have almost every game in the video and I'm still playing through some of them, but every game mentioned truly is fantastic and worth experiencing! I am interested in Poison Control, don't have that one yet or the first Nier game. Really enjoying Nights of Azure 2 so far! Still would love to get the first game, but it is sadly expensive. I haven't even seen it discount on the PSN either. Anyway, I'm really happy to delve more into the games I currently have!

I cant recommend Nier Replicant enough. If you dig Automata then youll dig Replicant. Goes without saying that getting all the endings is a must so prepare to sink some time into it to get the full experience. One of the most satisfying games to finish to absolute completion.
@@SkillShoe-f11 That's awesome to hear! Do you know how it compares the original Nier? I tried playing that one and although I liked the characters and combat, there were some mechanics I found frustrating. Like when you go into these rooms and had to determine what actions you couldn't perform or you'd have to restart in that room and fishing was difficult to figure out. I am still interested in trying Replicant though! I did enjoy Automata and got all of the main endings.
@@bergster30 replicant is weird. Its basically the original nier reimagined and you play as the brother instead of the father. They tweaked A LOT in replicant. Everything is smoother including the combat and many of the puzzles are more fluid and explained better. The only part I can think of in Replicant that was annoying was a text based puzzle that does make you start over if you pick the wrong anwer but honestly once the puzzle clicks its super easy, and that part is really short tbh. Apart from that they really did revamp the absolute shit out if it. Replicant will be a cult classic standing on its own merits even apart from its original and it's sequel Automata. I get super dorky and ramble on about anything related to the Drakengard universe lol

I’ve been collecting switch, ps4 and ps5 rpgs for a few years now but here lately a ton of titles are down to 15 to 25 bucks. The tales series on ps4 are all on the 20 dollar mark and that’s a great place to start. Right now is best time to be a collector

Solid list. I’ve played a few, own some that I have haven’t played yet, and got interested in a few. Though rising prices for physical media saddens me. I looked up some on the PS store, and, $59.99 for both Nights of Azure:( Hmm. Nier:Automata is the best game on that list that I have played, and the first game I actually enjoyed a “play again” mechanic in. New Game+ is wasted on me. Also 13 Sentinels. Makes me wonder if the Switch version is worth it or if PS4 is the way to go (esp since I play on PS5). Not a fan of Switch ports if they noticeably degrade the visual experience:(

@@InfectedElite Tales of Vesperia is alright game, my problem is with the main character. *spoilers* As much as people like how Mc Yuri actually does things normal mc would not, however I fathom all the consequences of his actions and how it would have made life really hard for rest of team especially for Estelle because he hid these things from team. Even Karol a kid has more sense to tell him that's not acceptable and could backfire on rest of us. Story doesn't follow through with this well, as his best friend is spot on and explains it what point of changing things if you go around just killing people? They never really come to conclusion with that arc. Main female lead is bit off putting too Estelle and thought they could done her arc better.
Started Tales Of Arise yesterday and love it so far. I have Scarlet Nexus on the way. Some good stuff on this list. It's a great time to be a JRPG fan.
I'm playing tales of vesperia for the 1st time and i know everyone is different but i love it it's so much fun. I bought tales of arise and it wilp be here in a few days. I'm so excited to play it. I'm new to the tales of series trying to get peoples suggestions on wich ones out of the series are the best ones. I also want to get tales of symphonia and beseria i heard those are pretty good too along with tales of xilla 1 and 2. I just got into rgps not that long ago after i played the witcher 3 the wild hunt and fell in love with it. Bloodborne too(not done with it either) i still need to play elden ring and skyrim. If anyone has any suggestions for rpgs or jrpgs that are really long and have amazing replay value along with good story and great combat please let me know. But yeah I'm loving tov great story great combat i just can't stand rita mordio she's so bitchy towards karol like omg she needs to take a chill pill lol I'm waiting for gow ragnarok to go down in price cuz that's the game I've been waiting to play since they announced the release date i should've saved my money but didn't now I'm kicking myself for not doing so. What a great time to be a fan of jrpgs or just rpgs in general. Wish i had a nintendo switch so i could play xenoblade chronicles but i don't sadly just a ps2 ps3 and ps4. I'm a horror game fan that's my fav genere but i love other genres as well. Only games i tried but couldn't get into were halo,call of duty ect. Silent hill hill and resident evil series are my 2 fav series of all time.i love games with weird creatures in it or just creatures in general like dragons or the beasts in gow those were pretty cool. But gow 2018 is another fav of mine. I bought every gow game a few years ago and loved them all.
Automata is just my favourite game on PS4 generation, and Tokyo Xanadu... I discovered this game with the japanese demo and was immediatly in love, eventhought it was graphicaly late (like many great JRPG after all). The gameplay, the musics, the Persona like scenaristic development, the anime style characters, so I bought the collector when I was able to and get all trophies on it. The game don't need a sequel but I hope for another Tokyo Xanadu in the future ! I will not talk about the others but I have quite all of them and need to find the time to play them! ^^' Especialy Ys and Tales of games I didn't played yet. Anyway, I approve this list =^)

About Tales of series, I discover the licence with Symphonia on Gamecube and became a fan (played Phantasia after that and it was great for a Super Famicom game). I already know I will love Berseria, and probably Arise too. I managed to appreciate Zestiria after all X^D You can notice that Vesperia is available on PS4 gen. You don't talk about some Persona or Dragon Quest in your list, P5 (first edition) is in the PS5 free games list. And I didn't played them yet too but I think the Trails of Cold Steel licence would have a good place here. I'm so late on my games, a life is not enought to play them all ^^'
I have a lot of of these and really like JRPGs, i would recommend Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4 on PS4, they are not your traditional JRPGs but are fantastic and both can be bought at decent prices.
Yeah, it is hard to get some titles in my country so I have to get them overseas. RPG games are my weakness, I want the ones I like more physycall if the price is ok, if not, digital is my call unless I get rich. Thanks a lot.
Well, Shining Resonance's battle system is actually an evolution of its strategy game version from previous entries (it's pretty much an action version of Shining Blade and Shining Ark battle system). 🤔

It's rare I see a game list where I can say I already own all but one (never tried the Ys series) but a few that I think a worth a note is Blue Reflection, the gameplay isn't too extreme but I find the story and journey is enjoyable all the same, Akiba's Beat is a similar battle system to people who enjoy the tales of series for combat, Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force being a remaster of the original version on ps3 but adding so much more to gameplay and extra stories makes it a much more definitive experience, Crystar was a much more enjoyable experience than I initially expected it to be with each characters diversity in combat and the overall story it had to tell and the last game/series to note is the Atelier series, I've been on this series since its first game on the ps3 and while some games are a hit and miss with some, I found balancing all the gameplay elements to never be too daunting
Very solid list I absolutely love the ys series and i personally find celceta in some ways more enjoyable then monstrum nox, (Lacrimosa of dana is still a favorite though) Might look into Sakura wars and Tokyo Xanadu later

If you love Ys I'm sure you will like Tokyo Xanadu. It feels more Dungeon Crawler like but the combat is almost the same. Music is as good as in Ys titles if not a tad better. And I do agree on your take about celceta, 8 was always my favourite Ys game but Celceta grew on me and I really loved the music, it added so much to the adventurous feeling you'll get while playing!

Looks like it's about too late for Nights of Azure 2 but 13 Sentinels and Sakura Wars I'll Definitely look in to. Got Tokyo Xanadu ex+ nearly a month ago for under 30 bucks and enjoying it immensely. Got Y's 8 a few years ago for around 20 bucks. Amazed that it has gone up so much as well as Y's 9 that I got months ago for a reasonable price but it's now going up as well

I started with Ys Origins and afterwards 8, Memories of Celceta and then 9. 9 is such a good game but especially 8 and Memories of Celceta are just fantastic. They do have their different strong points especially the spectacular music. But Celceta feels like the most adventurous game to me or captures it the best imo.

Great list there and the majority that I haven't played besides Tokyo Xanadu which I've put on the side because I started it immediately after Persona as a lot of people kept mentioning how similar they are but I didn't think so in my opinion! Woo! Great suggestions! I don't have most of these though so my wallet hates you now lol. It does mean lots of great games to look forward to though! One that I do have is Aegis Rim! Haven't played it yet but I snagged that when I noticed how cheap it was. (I guess I also have Memories of Celceta, but on the Vita). Some well-priced RPGs I can recommend... Well obviously you know about Ryza 1 & 2. I haven't gotten to those two quite yet but they both sound great and both seem to be a good price for now. I've seen them spike all over the place price wise though. I'd highly recommend the Yakuza series! All of the PS4 entries in the series are a great price! Right now they seem to be $30 tops on Amazon, and I've really enjoyed all of the ones I've played so far. Some of them are very high on my top games of all time :) And one I haven't played yet but I'd suggest keeping an eye out for if you like dungeon crawlers, would be Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk. I've heard a lot of great things about it, but it's not talked about much and it's from NIS... Who I really don't trust to keep things well stocked. Anyway, great video as usual :) Would love to see more videos like this in the future as well! Always great to look out for the cheap good games!!

I love Tokyo Xanadu. Not only was it my first Falcom game, but it hit me hard with the music and combat, and then the story and characters worked so well, I couldn’t just stop playing it, and I ended up completing the storyline for my first play through but that was only the main part. The rest such as the epilogue and what not, I haven’t gotten to yet since I’ve been getting to other games such as the cold steel games and Hajimari but the imported JP version because I fell in love with the story so much for CS 1-4. Anyway, Tokyo Xanadu is fantastic for the PS4 because not only do you get fantastic combat and music, but a very fitting story and characters that bounce off of each other very well with the dialogue of the story. When I got that normal ending for the first play through, I balled my eyes out like crazy I was so happy I enjoyed the game. Whoever reads this, consider picking up Tokyo Xanadu for the PS4 if you want something with extra content, fantastic combat, and a thrilling action packed adventure with very awesome moments and a great story.
@@HallowedBeThyGame I ended up getting the game’s limited edition online through Amazon for one of my birthdays recently a couple years back, and I was so happy to have gotten it since it has a lot of interesting stuff in it besides the game itself such as playing cards and CD for a little bit of the soundtrack.

Such a great list of games! Glad to see Tokyo Xanadu getting some love here. I was able to get the special edition a couple of years ago for about $40 which was a steal. In regard to Ys VIII (PS4), last I checked on NIS America's store, they still had copies in stock for retail. Some recommendations that come to mind for me (not sure if they'll be pricey in the future though): Super Neptunia RPG, Cross Code, Blue Reflection Second Light (it's the second game but I played it without playing the first and still enjoyed it a lot), and DQ XI S (mainstream yes, but it's so good and for the price it's going for right now is such a deal).

@@HallowedBeThyGame Nice, I think you'll enjoy Neptunia seeing how you are able to have fun with funny anime tropes. I came into the series a bit late with the remaster of the first game on PS5. Senran Kagura games are also really fun hack and slash. You can do some cool combos.
My manager just gave me her old PlayStation 4 because she got a PS5 for Christmas. As a huge RPG fan, this list is exactly what I need. While I prefer my Switch and will still try to get as many games for it as I can, I am definitely going to be open to getting the PS4 versions of some games especially if the price is cheaper and of course I'm out to get some PS4 exclusives like the Final Fantasy VII Remake and especially the Kingdom Hearts All in One Package. Also where's Dragon Quest Heroes II? I have every Dragon Quest game available in English on the Switch except for the recently released DQ Monsters Dark Prince. When I saw how good it looked I ordered a new physical copy of DQH2 new for like $20 which was a pleasant surprise.
I already own 6 out of 10 of these games but if anything that just shows that you and me have similar tastes in games lol. I'll definitely be checking out Scarlet Nexus, Poison Control, Nights of Azure 2, and Shining Resonance Refrain when I get the chance

I sadly don’t have a full review but have discussed the series on my Top 10 PS Vita rpgs list. Also I highly recommend The Kiseki Nut as his channel is devoted to the entire series. Hope that helps, I love them!
I saw Tokyo Xanadu and I instantly clicked on this video. I really liked the Story and the characters. The gameplay and music were my absolute favourites, the OST is so underrated. I will always wholeheartedly recommend this gem to anyone interested in jrpgs, forever.
The nice thing about Scarlet Nexus is that a SN2 is very possible given it got 1 Million in direct sales and reached 2 Million players total due to Gamepass (so indirect sales i guess?)...which for a completely new anime jrpg is very very good. With that said some changes I'd hope for SN2 would be: -an actual game world (open world, field map, world map, don't matter which really just rather multiple cities, dungeons, and fields in between that you travel on foot/vehicle between rather than via a hub) -more character/world lore driven side quests rather than fetch/hunt quests (same issue i had with Tales of Arise and FFXV) -movement felt a bit too floaty so make that feeling a bit less would be nice -leave less plot holes than 1 did (basically some stuff that happened to enemy factions in New Himuka, Seiran, and Togetsu wasn't really explored But ya besides that would also love to see Falcom announce a Tokyo Xanadu 2 which if they can get a more competent localizer (Aksys outright butchered the Vita version...did fix up the PS4 version's translation a bit so all lines were more easily readable but was still somewhat sub par tbh...but for reference Vita version is on SAO Hollow Fragment levels of bad starting from chapter 5 onwards (before that it was kinda decent...my guess is they got the rights to the PS4 version when they were at this point and decided to half ass the rest of the Vita translation for the sake of the PS4 translation as the Vita was more or less a 'dead' console for years by that point)). After all Tokyo Xanadu's Ys combat combined with Trails style storytelling could easily place it as my favorite game of all time (currently a titled held by Tales of Symphonia for about 20 years now lol, that game while not outright amazing in any category besides maybe story (best Tales story to date imo) also doesn't have any particular weakness either making it, imo, the most solid Tales game in the series in all aspects of the game and that even applies to rpgs/games in general tbh)). Would say like a SN2 an actual larger world map, larger dungeons, and a few more world lore/important npc focused side quests (don't really need playable character side quests as we got bonding events). Solid list as a whole though, granted haven't played Poison Control (never bought...looked kinda iffy tbh) or Nights of Azure 2 (have it but still haven't beaten 1 yet so won't start that until i finish the first game, have it on Switch rather than PS4 though). Also haven't gotten Automata, got Replicant remaster though this past Christmas...biggest issue i have with Automata (which may also be in Replicant) is the Bullet Hell looking sections...worst comes to worst for me if I can't find Automata cheap physically I'll buy it digitally when it's on sale. As for 13 Sentinels, yeah definitely one of the best games released this past decade, hell was my GotY for 2020 and Cold Steel 4 came out that same year (and Trails is my second favorite series after Tales). The story was definitely the highlight of the game with the combat playing second fiddle (in fact about 80% of the game is story while 20% is combat), was still a solid Tower Defense like combat system though. As for my own recommendation that isn't on the list, granted not sure what the price is right now, it would be Code Vein from Namco. It's essentially Namco's own developed Souls style game with a bit more emphasis on character driven storytelling rather than passive storytelling that's told through items, a few npc dialogues, other non cutscene methods...a more accurate way to describe it would be God eater cutscenes combined with Souls combat i guess. Wound up being my favorite game of 2019 and I'm not even that into Souls like games (hell Elden Ring and Ender Lillies are about the only other one i have really liked so far tbh). Would also recommend my favorite and second favorite games of 2018 while I'm at it: Valkyria Chronicles 4 and Dragon Quest 11 (the later more people likely picked up though) as along with the games on this list and the ones I mentioned they're also some of the best games released this past decade alongside the entire Trails series (would also recommend btw). And as for one more niche recommendation: Valkyria Revolution...well yeah i can see the eyebrows being raised with this one tbh but as far as story goes it is, imo, the second best after Valkyria Chronicles 4, unfortunately the game gets a bad rep due to not using VC combat system and everyone thought the series would go action combat when VR was only meant as a spin off game...same situation for Akiba's Beat (another good game btw) tbh, combat could've been better of course as attacking initiates the full normal attack combo with just one tap of the attack button and gun gameplay is restricted by ammo low limits and enemy difficulty can bee too easy at the start and then sometimes BS at the end of the game but the story and character side quests/skits more than make up for it imo to make the game about an 7/good out fo 10/perfect.
There's so many quality points here on Scarlet Nexus 2. And I'm honestly wanting to play Valkyria Revolution. I've only ever played 1 and 4 but I love them. I'm always open to deviations in series tho. Thanks for sharing this!
Yesss! Tales of berseria! So happy to see this on the list....I hate when gaming channels mention a bunch of jrpg titles and tales titles and then fail to shout this one out! It's a classic for sure.
Greetings, not sure if you are aware of this PS4 title as its a heavy dungeon-crawler but I really enjoyed Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk by NIS America. Definitely a sleeper game with stunning visuals, a good story and deep dungeon exploration. I put about 50 hours into this game and it was well-worth it.

Do I spy Tokyo Xanadu? EDIT: Yooo Shining Resonance Refrain too? I liked that game a lot too and it's a shame so many people say it's bad. Sure the story is meh and generic, but the gameplay is really fun and the soundtrack is great.
Wow good thing i live in Europe. Here in Germany i paid 20 Euro each for: - Tales of Berseria - Shining Resonance Refrain (Steel Case Edition) - Nier Automata Game of the YoRHa Edition Those are Store prices not Amazon or Ebay or any form of Retail. Completely new sealed copys. And both Sakura Wars and Knight of Azure 2 were available on the used game section in my Local Gamestop. Sadly i didnt pick them up and cant anymore because the Store closed duo to Corona. Still the Europe Versions of the Games seem to be way cheaper when you can find them in Stores.
@@HallowedBeThyGame Yeah but the downside is you need to find them in store. Because here in Germany Games that dont Sell get cheaper over time (which is normal i guess) but stores also cut down prices alot when they want the product gone once and for all. Best example would be my copy of Shining Resonance. As far as i know is the Steel Case Version the Pre-Order Version. So Pre-Ordering went so bad this item went directly into stores where also no one wanted it for a long time and then it was sold for 20 Euro. And even then the game was sitting there for like 1 year until i decided one day to give it a go. So yeah the only advice i can give is go and check your local stores first. Maybe they have a Game Corpse in a dark corner somewhere waiting to be ressurected. :)

YS: The Ark Of Napishtim / trails in the sky series. I bought them all for less than 30$ on sale. also, for games that cost more than 60$ trails of cold steel 3 and 4 are great.
@@HallowedBeThyGame Also, there is Trails from zero,Trails to azure and Nayuta boundless trails, those are not yet officially localized (will be in the following year or so, with Zero released in September) as for the games that are more than 60$ Trails into reverie is the newest localized trails game that is set to release next year.

@@HallowedBeThyGame I really like the game and it's music so yeah. It gets a lot of shit because censorship and not having much to do with Fire Emblem, poor marketing during the announcement... Etc. I had the luxury to experience the game with no SMT knowledge and the mindset that it is no Fire Emblem game. I even played it before Persona. Knowing that SMT is a really dark series overall I kinda get why people get annoyed from the rainbows TMS is puking everywhere. But regardless of that I'd say it's a good gameplaywise RPG. And of course, the music is great.
@@domicraft6341 yeah I’m in the same boat. I got into the series late and didn’t have to deal with the hard turn in themes. But hey yeah the music rocked haha 😂
A couple of other J-RPG's that I played recently that are definitely worth checking out and are fairly cheap (in Europe at least) : - Yakuza : Like A Dragon : The renewal of the Yakuza series with a turn-based, typical J-RPG battle system. It's a great game with a very interesting story, cool characters and overall a very fun game with a lot of humor. - The Trails of Cold Steel series : 4 episodes, many many hours of gameplay with a rich storyline and many endearing characters. The first 3 episodes are very cheap, the 4th one is more recent (and also a bit harder to find), so its price is unfortunately a bit higher at the moment, but it's still affordable.
I've been playing The Caligula Effect Overdose and want to recommend it. It has a lot to offer in terms of story and characters. The dungeons are pretty meh but the combat can be fun. This is a gama takes its character to their limit in terms of development.
Nier series are the best I've ever played in my life. They are strange, the story is sad and the ost is epic and fits perfect with the games. As for the rest presented here, I've only played a bit of Scarlet Nexus and it was very boring. Maybe it gets better down the road but I've never had the patience to reach that part. Maybe I will give it another try. Some other games that I've played and loved very much are Persona 4 Golden, Persona 5, Persona 5 Royal, Persona 5 Strikers, Shin Megami Tensei Apocalypse, SMT 5, SMT 3 Nocture which is my favorite from all of them especially for the OST which has to be the best I've ever heard in a game before and Tales of Arise. These are some that come in my mind right now but the list is much longer. Thanks for the video and hope you will make another one on this topic cause there are so many more of these games to add.
PS: I forgot to tell you that One Piece Warriors 4 and the Naruto Storm trilogy have high discounts but digital of course. Not a fan of digital at all but the offers here in my country were too good to say no. I love One Piece very much and Naruto seems to be another very good game. Damn, I can't live without japanese games. I hope I can finish Freedom Wars on my Vita.
