On a second look at this video I noticed that this first plane is claimed to have a 35 hp engine and will, "cruise at 65 mph and has a top speed of 63 mph"! Amazing 😅

Once again, certain caveats need to be kept in mind. First and foremost, in the USA, the legal term "ultralight aircraft" means an aircraft that strictly adheres to Part 103 of Federal Aircraft Regulations (FAR): Maximum cruise speed of 65 knots; maximum empty weight of none-amphibious aircraft of 254 lbs.; single passenger and maximum fuel tank capacity of 5 gallons. As in other videos from Beyond Facts, uses the term "ultralight" almost interchangeably. Always be aware that "ultralight" specifications is different in almost every other country in the world (if regulated at all), USA being the most conservative. LSA (light sport aircraft) are NOT ultralight aircraft. LSA certification requires the identical training and testing as a Private Pilot license with the singular exception of a flight physical. LSA aircraft also has it's limitations on capacity, speed and when you can operate.

05:25 SD-1, the reason it has such high performance is *not* the SE33 four stroke V-twin engine, but rather the superb aerodynamic quality of the design. The fuselage is sleek, the wings feature a rather thin laminar airfoil - a plane that has hardly any drag needs very little power to fly fast! 05:40 Also, the empty weight is 264 lbs (not 286 lbs) with a MTOW of 529 lbs.

I noticed that you claim that one of the amphibious models was part 103 ultralight compatible but the weight was well over the 254 lb. limit at 300+ lbs. Are there weight exceptions for amphibious models?

Use extreme caution when watching this video. Many of the references that the aircraft is ultralight legal in the US are FALSE ! Any reference that the aircraft is more than 254 lb empty weight, carries more than 5 gallons of fuel, or has a top speed of more than 55 knots or 63 miles per hour is not an ultra-light in the US. That does not mean it cannot be flown but it does mean it cannot be flown without at least a Sport Pilot license.

I just looked up the specs for the Airsport Song UL. It does NOT fit in with the specs for an ultralight in terms of speed and fuel carried. well, there goes that idea for my weekend purchases....

Can I get any input from anybody? Trying to look up info on the pietenpol air camper as far as what class of aircraft it belongs to. Tried Google and didn't find any sort of straight answer

Well, in germany you need also for those a special pilotslicence -> the 120kg UL class. You train on Ultralightaircrafts (in germany are planes with maximum takeoffweight of 600kg called ultralight) like a Comko Ikarus C42, and fly then on those planes. The only differences are: no medical and no minimum flighthours, and no checkflights

SD PLANES SD-1 are the best in this rewiev. It looks as a normal plane, with aerodynamic cookput and cabin. If I have to choose from these planes, I would buy it.

I think someone needs to understand what the term ultralight means in the US. Half these planes shown here are not ultralights here in the US and require at minimum, a light sport certificate.

Several of these models shown do not comply with FAR 103, and I quote "a powered ultralight is an aircraft that weighs less than 254 pounds, carries a maximum 5 gal. of gas, doesn't fly faster than 63 mph and seats only one person." The SD-1 shown here blows past that 63mph max requirement alone. The title of the video is misleading.

@@BeyondFacts No but I worked at a german airport & when I was around 18-19 years old I had the opportunity to talk to the leader of traffic control of MUC. My dream was to become a 🚁-Pilot and he told me a lot about this topic. The answers: you need minimum 250.000,-€ and about other aircraft’s ... The result: I am way too poor to reach it. =/

@@TransferAir That is just not true. I am german, I have build a SD-1(callsign D-MTDC, find it here on youtube) which cost less than 20000,-€ and all you need to fly that plane is a 120kg sport pilot license which you could probably obtain for less than 2000,-€. However, I would stongly advise against trying to fly a SD-1 as your very first plane, as it is very agile, fast and not easy to take off and land.

Hello Dan, you are correct the Mitchell wing is no longer in production. But you can purchase of plans for the B-10. As you may know this is the all wood built-up version of the Mitchell Wing.

Anyone can get a plane into the air but it takes serious training from a pilot-instructer to land it safely, or get out of a stall or spin without dying. Furthermore, you need an on-type pilot to explain the characteristics of each plane you want to fly. Falling out of the sky is not a JOKE!

LSA and Ultralight are two separate categories of aircraft. One requires a license, while the other does not. Half of the airplanes shown were not part 103 - you know, the one that requires no license. Click bait crap.

Please get training before you fly these machines. You might know “basic’s”....but what are you gonna do when you have a engine failure, a stall, or mechanical problems?? Please be smart and go get training before going up in a light aircraft. These aircrafts are much lighter which means cross winds will effect you a lot more. Everyone stay safe! It doesn’t take many hours to become a pilot!!

like half of these you actually do need a license to fly. It's light sport if it's over 254lbs. For a float plane you get an extra 40lbs for the floats, so 294lbs max. Over those weights you need a license and they fall out of the 103 ultralight class. And one last thing there's a max speed allowed in ultralight class of 55 knots.
