I bought / imported this computer in 1992 to the Netherlands where I live. It was very expensive and also had to buy a 220v to 110v converter as the computer run on 110v. I had a lot of fun with this machine and now it has its final rest place in the HomeComputerMuseum in Helmond, the Netherlands so all the visitors can play with this remarkable machine

I'm VERY impressed by the fair amount of research spent in this video, much information here I haven't read anywhere else so far... It's a very remarkable and distinct 16-bit system, too late in its release and sadly unpopular... But, as I can see, the afterlife of the MSX Turbo-R is one of the most remarkable, and the amount of games you've gotten for this episode has impressed me...! In fact, I only knew 3 or 4 of them... Hope you give me some tips for your sources...! Thanks!

This one took me a long time to put together, near enough a week all-told because of all the research, recording and then production involved. So many sources, I did mean to link more in the description but only just got this one up in time, so I planned to go back and add some more. That said the MSX Wiki website, which I did link, was invaluable. They asked me to work with them a while back but I just don't have the time sadly. Generation MSX is the best site for cross referencing games and I actually found RU-vid itself really good for finding homebrew stuff.

The MSX Turbo-R was in fact not really 16-bit. The R800 procssor had a 16-bit ALU, but externally it was still an 8-bit CPU, just like the Z80 as it retained the 8-bit databus.

The v9958 is not a stripped down v9978. It is an upgraded v9938 and was introduced in 1988 for the msx2+

9:30 - Haha... it was very fashionable at the time to market everything as RISC whether it was or not. The R800 CPU was accumulator based and definitely not RISC. Even Zilog got into that game by claiming that their own Z8000 CPU (which was not Z80 compatible) was RISC. Hey, it was the 90's, and computer marketing was a hot mess.

I couldn't find any reference to the R800 being RISC based so that was suspicion, but I didn't want to say because I wasn't totally sure and there is so little info on the Turbo R out there, making it very hard to cross reference and verify things.

to be fair Z80 was pretty RISC compared to the m68k! I had all the opcodes for the z80 memorized and could bang out small programs directly in hex machine code. No way when i moved to the m68k, wayyyyy more complicated.

i guess them going with z80 ended up being a mistake since it was one of the best options when the first msx came out but zilog didn't believe in backwards compatibility like most companies back then .so the msx had to switch to another architecture but then it wouldn't be backwards compatible. the only cpu architecture that was used back then and is still used in modern computers is 86x. but in the early 80s they were bad and expensive so most companies went for z80 or 6502 or 68000 but they all didn't make it far .i think that is why a lot of early computer companies didn't make it past the 90s.

V9990 was released in 1991 also it never had the compatibly with the v99x8 . It is not removed . They left it out in the design , greatly frustrating nishi

not sure if you're aware, but I'm pretty sure the art at 7:25 is not official msx art, and is actually concept fan art by arne jensen of android arts. I don't know if this matters, but fyi anyway...

Yeah I am well aware, Sony weren't even signed up to make MSX3 computers, this is just somebody's fantasy, albeit a very cool one

3:44 Apple iIGS is another exemple of this . Apple IIGS has a 16-bit cpu with MegaII chip. that it is a Apple II on Chip, for retrocompatible.

I think that graphical menu is more a by-product of Panasonic being the only maker of Turbo R's and not a part of the Turbo R platform. The previous members of the Panasonic A1 line also had it.

Yes, somebody else also pointed this out, I always forget about the Apple II GS because we didn't have it in the UK.

@@TheLairdsLair It was an expensive and beautiful looking beast when it came out. I only got my hands on the one in my Junior High computer lab. But software wise...MAYBE i got to touch the broderbund paint app. It came out fairly early, maybe 1985. Maybe we got to sit at it and do the same basic programming drill or exercise as on the iiEs. I do think the ii and iiGS series should find themselves in your upcoming video polls...far less obscure than some of the others on a global scene.

The graphics were really underwhelming for an expensive 1990 release. You had much cheaper gaming consoles for cheaper and I don't see much on the non-gaming side making it superior to other available computer models
