MLK was a different story, as he was a civil rights activist in a time where racial segregation and racism were still strong. Without the second world war, Britain would have remained a global superpower and America would never have become one. Given how much of modern technology was developed during second world war and the cold war that followed, one can only wonder what kind of world we would live in today had Franz Ferdinand not been assassinated.

Shane Ballance He was okay. Decent songwriter and nice voice, but he was dwarfed by his contemporaries (i.e. Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, etc.). Nirvana had one huge hit with Teen Spirit but none of their other songs were remotely as big. Pearl Jam actually sold way more records and Nirvana were fading out in 1994, but then he shot himself and immortalized his music. It was kind of the best business move he ever made.

Hi post-beatles career was about causes. He wrote "Give Peace a Chance" "Imagine" "Happy X-Mas" "Working Class Hero" and they are all classics, perhaps some of the most famous anti-war and socially critical songs ever made. One top of that he combined that with memorable activism against war, it inspired a whole generation, and people like me, born in the 80's, to be anti-war. BTW my #1 favorite song is "Real Love" take 4. Just John Lennon on the piano. Nevertheless, the point here is that the killing of a Beatle is nowhere near as big as the killing that caused World War I.
