wow. I just clicked on this because I'm interested in the microfreak and Im suuuuupernew to making music, haven't even bought my first synth yet. And hearing you explaining what one is able to do with the sound, how to use it, even though I probably understood less than half almost made me cry a couple of times because it's so amazingly beautiful. I'm in awe of how we are able to create with sound in this way. Thank you so much for this video!

WOW! Rn I'm just in the EXACT SAME spot as you described here, 2 years ago! Started pretty recently on music, but I noticed that I'm SUPER interested on what you can do with SOUNDS in general nowadays, and synths kinda comes close from what I wish I could do. I've been searching a little bit, and Microfreak seems a pretty good option for a dumb beginner as me, but with SO MUCH potential to unfold over time, and in a pretty decent price ;) I would like to know about your experience (if you started in this world of synths and production), because, as anything else in this world, it seems like there's A LOT to learn and to experiment, just that I'm actually kinda intrigued in this little world of big sounds :D

TFW when Tone Jay casually drops the most devastatingly concise explanation of what 'Sustain' actually is and you spend the next 20 minutes sitting on your couch, staring into the middle distance, thinking about how you've been looking at ADSR all wrong for years.

Good video, the microfreak is cool but I wouldn't have done a video on types of synthesis to show its features and use some modules to fill in the gaps, I know this is to showcase the microfreaks features there's a lot more to different types of synthesis than what is shown here, I'd rather watch a video series where you guys show different types of synthesis using iconic synths that you sell on reverb where you take time to explain what is really happening instead of this video just basically trying to sell the microfreak to viewers.

Since when were the early DX’s/DX-7 preset synths? Even the PSS570 has a modifiable synth section! Great video otherwise. Back in the day we knew that to sound interesting and not like everyone else with the same synth, we’d have to spend months learning and years honing our sound with a give you synth or synthesis type. Lots of producers used presets because, well, they weren’t synthesists(!) but the DX7 is still a deeply interesting synthesiser today, but you do need a lot of time (largely not an issue back then because most people owned 2 synths tops, and no computer), or a very good visual editor

So many options lol... Also the new Moog Collection comes with a little bit of everything and a dice game to teach you the patches

WARNING: this keyboard malfunctions. Getting a hold of Arturia support is very difficult and they have left me hanging for weeks after sending it in to be fixed. I really wish I had bought something that worked instead of this thing. It really seems like a cool keyboard, but don't be fooled by the video and marketing...it is a barely functioning toy that will not hold up in any kind of professional environment.
@8thlvlMage
@8thlvlMage 3 года назад
I've had mine for a month. Seems to be holding up pretty well, but I also try to not abuse my gear. When you buy a piece of gear for less than a lot of eurorack modules, you kind of have to temper your expectations. Calling it a toy just because you're frustrated is a bit overkill.

OMG. The MicroFreak is nothing more than a (digital) wavetable synth with some common modulation options. Yes, it uses subtractive methods, but so do all wavetable synths, and the source oscillators are all digital. Are some "analog modeled"? Ok. Yes. Great. As for FM?! Wow! FM as a CONCEPT is little more than an LFO. The magic of FM comes from complex multi- operator synths with complex algorithms. To say that there's real FM in the MicroFreak is like saying that there's real analog in a JP-8000. Vector synthesis? Come on! Morphing wavetables using 2 dimensional control isn't vector synthesis. The Wavestation, for example, literally transformed digital waveforms in real time NOT using tables. PCM sample manipulation? Ok. Not wavetable. Physical modeling? Please! Start with Karplus- Strong (which isn't here) and you begin to see PM. Sample based? Ok. Sure. But, in reality, at a wave level, wavetable IS sample based synthesis... Therefore, for a short duration, most wavetable synths technically ARE granular...but nobody calls the Blofeld a "granular" synth? Lol! Lastly, I won't even comment on WC other than to say that wavefolding ≠ WC synthesis any more than LP filters = "subtractive". Nice way to sell MicroFreaks, but hardly an honest depiction of synthesis architectures.

Omg, did you really just go on a synth rant that seems to miss the point of the entire video? The presenter is not claiming that the MicroFreak uses all 10 types of synthesis. He's using it, combined with a few modules and snynths to demonstrate some basic synthesis concepts and give a small taste of the kinds of sounds they produce.

This isn't really an educational and technically accurate explanation of different types of synthesis; it just pretends to be until you pull off the Scooby Doo mask and you realize it's just an infomercial for one specific keyboard. Lame.
