If anyone liked the Silver Buttonwood but doesn't live near a native nursery (2 hr drive for me), I found Silver Buttonwoods at my local Lowe's. Or more specifically, the pot I picked up had two Buttonwoods in it. I got it home dunked the rootball into a 5 gal bucket and let it soak for 30 mins before gently separating the two plants and repotting them to rest until after last frost.

Prettiest bird I’ve ever seen in my St Pete backyard was an Indigo Bunting. Absolutely beautiful. Very rare sighting!

I am absolutely in love with that silver buttonwood and snowberry now!! I’m going to need both of these! Do you think you could plant the snowberry under the buttonwood?
@SouthernLatitudesFL
@SouthernLatitudesFL 8 месяцев назад
I need to look more into that Silver Buttonwood! Is the root system really compact or does it stretch out far? I am looking for something 12 ft but doesn't make a huge root system. I have underground pool pipes.

How is my garden growing? IDK I had to move and leave everything I had growing. My landlord decided to sell and told us to move in under 60 days. We pulled out of Hillsborough county on Oct 31 at 8am. Arrived at our "new" house around 10:20am in the lower section of N. Fl. Rocks. Why do they put rocks in their planting beds up here??? Old former Retirement community. Now family, and retirement area. Most of our lots in this neighborhood are 1/4 acre. I managed to bring 1 Moringa, 1 Papaya, 1 Curry leaf, Italian Oregano, Longevity Spinach, Parsley, Rosemary, Hot peppers 3 types, Basil, Cuban Oregano, and Aloe. The other plants I brought did not survive. So we are putting in raised beds. (2 gifted from former neighbor Thank you K!!! ) I have 4 Round Pots that are same height as raised bed. So mini raised beds. Grow bags... My husband picked up starter trays, soil and some seeds Monday. SO I started seeds yesterday in our Fl. Room Window that gets full sun for about 7 hrs. Not much growing. Not much of anything...

I know this is considered a tree not a shrub but what are your thoughts on crape myrtles? I've been doing a little research and it seems there are differing opinions on whether or not they are invasive. Invasive potential because of how much seed they produce but also potentially beneficial for the amount of birds they feed. Not to mention how beautiful they are. Thoughts?

Will having plants that atteact birds be detrimental to the insects you are trying to attract with a butterfly garden?

Birds eat ticks, a bird feeder saved my tick infested property. Humming birds loved my fire bush. Off topic, I found a monarch caterpillar on some hibiscus I was propagating at Scrubland Farmz. Sam the owner took it and placed it on the ideal plant for the critter and came back to tell me it was a Monarch. I am not a butterfly guy but I know they are beneficial so I do what I can to advance them through life. I now can spot the monarch caterpillar. 🐛

Thank you for this great list, another great aspect of Yaupon Holly especially the Weeping help on Holly is it makes a very decent tea that not only has a respectable amount of caffeine but also full of antioxidants

Love this video! In the future I'd appreciate video discussing Marlberry vs shoebutton I think is the name. One is native and beneficial and the other is invasive and they look so similar and are in the same family. It's confusing trying to tell them apart.

Snowberry will HAVE to go in! Thank you so much for including it on this list. I've never heard it discussed (though I think I've seen it) but I love that the berry is white and I double love the idea of supporting endangered butterflies.

Very nice video. Question: how do you get your coffee to flower/fruit? I have mine in a very shady spot. It had flowers when I first got it about a year or so ago from LittleRedWagon and it hasn’t flowered or anything since. It still looks great and healthy but not a single flower since I brought it home. Any ideas??

Another plant that is fruiting right now is Florida Privet. I’ve seen birds on mine right now. You need multiple to get a male and female.

Yapping Holly tea is high in Caffeine. Either it grows very slow or I am doing a poor job of feeding it. When I make tea from it I give the store/plaza near me free hedge trimming. I also only take beneficial prunings because technically it’s stealing but as long as I am leaving the plant and landscape in better condition than I arrived no one complains. I just hope I can get my Yaupon Holly to grow fast enough to supply my own. I use hollytone and Dr Earths pure gold but so far no growth. Nursery folks here say it’s very hard to propagate. It’s a plant I want to focus on learning to produce because fig leaf, yaupon holly leaf, ginger leaf, and calamundin (peel and fruit) tea is absolutely great in the morning. I also add other leaves with medicinal values. I will add goji and elderberries when my plants fruit. Anyways I wanted to rant about Yaupon Holly incase someone responds with their experiences with the plant 🪴 and possibly spread some useful information.

There are dwarf cultivars (which people like as a boxwood substitute). You might have one of those. Berries of course are toxic to us; the tea is from foliage. As with other hollies, berries are eaten by birds.

My firebushes don’t look like that! Just pretty green leaves and frequent fire orange flowers that the pollinators love. No berries.
@WildFloridian

Your firebush sounds like a hybrid. The non-native firebush doesn’t tend to have red leaves.
