I like to call the first 5 rule the Mr. Rogers rule. At the beginning of each episode he always walks in and immediately puts his coat into the closet and his shoes in the exact same spot.
At the beginning of the video: BRITTANY: "I am not a professional." ME: "She's totally a professional!" At the end of the video: BRITTANY: "I just consider my self a professional." ME: "I knew it!!"
I usually have a sudden cure of my "clutter blindness" as soon as someone I know says they're going to drop by for a visit! OMG. Then I see my house through someone else's eyes and it's a disaster! LOL
1-minute quick clean! I have a family of five, so we begin a timer in each room for 1 minute. Each of us does as much picking up and cleaning as we can before the 1-minute timer goes off. Once that goes off, it doesn't matter what still needs to be done, we move on to the next room. The magic of this is that I actually can get five minutes of cleaning in just one minute because of my family of five. So my entire house can get cleaned in under 15 minutes, which turns out to be 75 minutes of cleaning!!! Kids love it because it's a race! Teenagers love it because it doesn't take long. Mom loves it because the house is clean. Dad loves it.....well, because mom loves it🤣
TFS! I visited the home of a very elderly woman a few yrs back, just as she had finished her lunch. I was amazed at her beautiful maintained home, because she lived alone, and had no outside help or services. I had to ask what her method was for keeping her home so tidy.. she replied, “I do everything right away.. even when I’m tempted to set aside a plate or whatever and come back to it, I push myself to just get it done and out of the way.” She had raised several children and said “that if she not done things that way, she wouldn’t have ever gotten a break...” she added that she also taught her kids to do this, which eliminated a lot of extra work for her.. she credited her still being fit & healthy at 87 yrs old, to that lack of stress from living with clutter in her home & in her mind. I thought it was one of the best life lessons I’ve ever heard! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I'm a distracted cleaner. I start with one area in mind then Bam I'm off to another that catches my attention before I finish my first task. Not very productive. These are awesome tips ❤️
I do the same thing. When my mom was still alive she called it "Flutter Cleaning " LMBO because she said I fluttered from one room to next and never finished anything. Drove her nuts. Lol
Wendy D I am the same way. One method I’ve heard is to set a timer for however long (10 or 15 minutes), and not leave that room until the timer goes off. Don’t leave the room to put something else away. Don’t leave the room to answer the phone, etc. 🤷🏽♀️ Seems juvenile but I’m trying it.
@@jodyfro1312 I just recently started 15 mins increments. I liked it. When 15 mins up,I i take pile of stuff that belongs in another room and work there. And so on and so forth. I'm actually liking it and getting things done more than with my "flutter cleaning" method.
Try to accept and negotiate: you organize and the other person take care for an other thing. Think if you wanna be happy or have the things done in your own way. If this is not possible you be always frustrated and your relationship will suffer.
You have changed my life! Brittany you are a Godsend. Thank you for helping me eliminate the irritations in my life and giving me solutions to problems i have been dragging through life like a ball and chain. You are WONDERFUL. Thank you for all your research.
I was watching this video while working on a task for work, when tip #8 came up, I paused the video & got my task done - much faster than I would have if I kept watching! lol. Now, I can continue watching! I needed to hear that... I am always watching things while working & I know it takes me longer to finish each task but it's such a hard habit to break.
If it helps, I have a little cart that fits in my laundry room where I have EVERYTHING I need to clean. With your problem, try to declutter and find a spot in your empty closets/cabinets for what you have left.
@@aribeltamayo6727 I have the same problem. I don't have cabinets, drawers, shelves, or closets. How can I get organized? It's not that I have too much stuff, it's that the place I currently live in is super tiny, no place to put anything, not even my Vitamix that sits on top of my fridge because there's no kitchen counter.
One tip I have for overcoming overwhelm is to commit to work on one thing for an achievable period of time, like 5-10 minutes. That's it! You will either end up becoming motivated and work on it a little longer, or you will stop after your set time. But 5-10 minutes is better than nothing and you will be making a difference each time. Think of the saying, "eating an elephant, one bite at a time."
Try Marie Kondo's method. It is not "Will I need it/I might need it." The method is does it really bring me joy (with some exceptions like vacuums and brooms etc). Best to do it BY THE CATEGORY not the room.
emily mees It just doesn’t work for me. I tried it and all I can think about it whether I’m going to need it or not. Mostly stuff that goes in storage but I have to fit it all in my room.
I don’t know if this will help, my sister is a hoarder always saying I might need it or you might need it. I decided when I moved in my own place I would live minimal I try to keep telling myself if I can’t use it right now I’m not going to buy it or keep it I will give away or donate anything I’m not using. It’s not easy and sometimes therapy could help to find out why you have that mindset sometimes we don’t realize it that it was formed when we were very little. I hope the best for you.
Gao Youa Lee try this: could I borrow it, rent it or repurchase it for $20 or less if I really were to ever need it? If yes, let it go. My motto is “let the stores store it for you” lol.
I only discovered your channel a week ago and I'm completely obsessed. Your content is more useful and practical than any other youtuber I've found, EVER. Thank you for what you do!!!
I struggle with lack of motivation. I also think I avoid cleaning so that I can think about how dirty my home is, so that I wouldn't have to think about other stuff that bothers me in my life overall.
I used to struggle with this, but sometimes if something causes more of a headache to keep than the joy of the memory, I take a picture of it. That way I can look back on it and still have the memory without needing to hold on to the item.
My depression and anxiety have been kind of out of control lately, so I find myself putting things down where they don't belong and forgetting about it a lot more. Also having teenagers is hindering my ability to be organized. We live in a very small house and don't really have many places to put our stuff to begin with, so things tend to clutter our living space.
Melissa Elliott Why not try doing as she said, make your stuff fit the space. Teenagers need to keep their stuff in their bedroom. Make it a rule and they need to clean up after themselves. It’s a start.
I’ve been watching your channel for hours 🥰 I’m so inspired to get my home perfectly organized and cleaned while we are quarantined. You have the most relaxing voice ☺️
I was like that until I started going to the laundromat and saw everyone there folding their clothes right away which then motivated me to do the same, plus it helps reduce wrinkles in clothing and less need to iron or steam clothes.
Noemi Villasenor I use to be like that when my kids lived at home and we had 10 billion loads of laundry ( mostly clean clothes) and walking into my kids rooms that were most time a disaster..oh and lack of closet space never helped
Have you considered putting organizer baskets in your drawers and just piling your clothes in the categorized baskets? That way, you might be able to find everything without having to fold anything.
I was the same until I bought a "clothes folding board" on Amazon for $20. I am embarrassed to say, I so enjoy how perfectly folded my clothes turn out, that I catch myself folding the entire families when my teens are supposed to be taking care of their own clothes!
My guest bedroom has turned into a storage area. When someone visits everything in the rest of the house gets cleaned up and put in the bedroom. Bad habit.
waffles we moved in our house 1.5 years ago and everything that didn’t have a home went in our spare room,a family member came to stay with us so we had no choice to empty it lol
I have a closet under the steps. Everything I dont know where to put gets hidden there. I love all your tips and thank you for bringing fun ba k into everyday life!
Finding the perfect spot for stuff. I tend to just put things where there is space, towels and guest sheets with my clothes and tools in my linen closet 🤭
This year we started opening our mail as soon as we brought it in the house. Bills or things that need a response/follow-up get pinned on a certain board, family/friend cards get put on the fridge with a magnet, and everything else gets trashed right away so it doesn’t pile up. We used to save coupons and discount books, but we realized we never actual used them. 😊
I work from home and I find myself multi tasking from work to cleaning and vice versa and sometimes I get overwhelmed, but I do have a request, can you make a video on how you use your smart phone to help organize life ? I feel like that would be very helpful 😊
Reduce the number of cups/bowls (1 set per kid), and get all of them the same kind so they can stack. We used to have entire cabinets full of kids plates and got rid of 90%, there's really no need for so many. If in doubt, put the extras in a box in the garage so you can grab them if needed
We recently put our 3 1/2 year old son’s plates/bowls/utensils/cups in a lower cupboard and organized them in bins. We have him grab them out himself before meal time. He’s loving the independence and they’re all staying organized in their little bins! 🤗
Tiff Zilla ditto sometimes in between the parties, I think let’s clean for ourselves. We are a party just the two of us. But it’s also a great motivator to clean. 🎉
I love love love this video! Especially the tip on file don’t pile and the clothing one. I have so many clothes that I don’t wear but for whatever reason can’t bring myself to get rid of 😬 My organization area is a built-in cupboard near the kitchen that stores all appliances, containers, pots and trays etc. it’s overwhelming 😬😬
Yes many people dont start becuade they are overwhelmed, i have been doing my home for about 6 months. Its overwhelmingly because its a learning curve. Its a lifestyle change. And thats why it can take time
I wanted to let you know that I’ve been watching cleaning/organizing videos for years and you were one of the first channels I found. Since then my need for RU-vid and interests have changed but I still look forward to your videos more than any other RU-vidr I’m subscribed to. I have enjoyed all of your videos from room makeovers to listening to you share your most private experiences with pregnancy. I hope to see many many more videos from this channel for even more years to come. Keep up the awesome work and I can’t wait to see the video when you welcome your newest member of the family!
Lol Leanna ,that doesn't work for me, I wind up needing what I git rid of. So, I'm trying don't buy unless I absolutely don't have and need it and nothing I have can't substitute.
Gail Talley I agree with you! I know this TMI but I donated a bunch of 34C Victoria Secret bras because I gained weight and went up to 34D. But then I had my baby and after breastfeeding my lady friends shrunk 😄 and those 34C bras would’ve came in handy!

This is such a great video 😍 Thanks for the research and compilation of these great tips 👍🏻 Yes, would love very much to know your pregnancy journey 🥰 At this point in my life, I’m having a challenge to organize my puppy’s stuff into my space as I’m trying to be a moderate minimalist ☺️
I used to also and one New Years I turned all the hangers backwards. When I wore stuff I put it back in the right way. The next New Years I pulled out everything still backwards and donated it. After three years of doing I I had about 1/3 the clothes I used to and it was effortless.
Shaze Brothers Three - take all the clothes out and actually try them on! Many of them will be obviously out of style or unflattering and makes it much easier to give them away
Saga Fox-Wilde no way!! 😯 I have gotten to the point where I actually love cleaning out my closet. I do it at the beginning of spring/summer and again at the beginning of fall/winter. I have a recommendation: look up Alison Lumbatis and her “style challenges” and capsule wardrobes. (Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be a crazy spending spree!). Learning how to make current trends work for you and how to put together the whole outfit will make you want to wear what’s right for you right now and will actually make you want to get rid of the things that don’t work.
My #1 challenge is setting up systems to stay organized. I'm pretty good at keeping up with them but not so good at implementing them in the first place.
My current organization challenge is my toddler toys everywhere. We use baskets, containers, and drawers but her stuff is still everywhere. I'm teaching to pick up after herself and she's learning. But the struggle is real!
Challenge: Apartment living - working from home/bedroom with 2 kids. 😂 Andddd a corner space for my sister to sew her stuff and paint/drawing area for kids.
Great video, Brittany; I love how you curated the best ideas from a variety of organizers into one video! Despite all the technology that has reduced the flood of paper into my life; keeping on top of paperwork is STILL my biggest organizational challenge! I’ve got the basics well under control, but I’m ready to take paperwork wrangling to the next level ... any ideas? Thanks. 😊♥️
Biggest challenge: husband who says "hey, I like that" and/or "we might need that". Comment from me: Wait, being "clutter blind" is a bad thing? lol I've always seen it as a very useful mental defense mechanism.
My biggest struggle begins and ends with Kid’s items 😂 Their toys, cups, bowls, clothes.. they took over my entire house and I can’t find an organization system that works yet.
I'm sure you will hear this a "few" times... my husband's things... he sees an open counter or spot on floor and puts his things there ... super frustrating. I've tried leading by example and kids are on board but I'm forever battling husband's things!!! I've set up spots for him and his stuff but🤪
My biggest issue is when I have a dinner party and am cooking for a large amount of people coming over, my kitchen turns into a war zone!! And of course after I'm done cooking I don't feel like cleaning the entire mess I made 😫
My husband and I live in a small apartment and we like to buy things :) So we never have any space. Thankfully we are moving and getting rid of a lot of the clutter :)
Organizing/purging those areas that are "out of the way", such as closets, high cabinets, and storage units (like a sideboard or oversized coffee table). Areas that visitors can't see are so easy to dump in!
I struggle a lot with not having a “home” for items that clutter up surfaces especially in the kitchen. I only have 3 drawers in my whole kitchen so I’m super limited on storage, but also use things regularly that I don’t want to keep elsewhere like the basement because that would be so inconvenient!
I’ve been trying to focus on finishing one task at a time. When I go to do something else. I say “finish this”. Also before I buy, I ask myself when will I use it or when will I wear this? If I cannot answer, I do not buy
Right now my challenge is that my clothes is everywhere, I always forgot to put them in my wardrobe:( but I will try the first 5 mins rule . And also on my kitchen counter top I have too much things on it, I want to clear them up.
