Daniel Holleman no he isn't he didn't have that master feel to me just like Heath ledger didn't have that joker feel that came to the writing mostly but with this master there is unanswered questions that come with his existence like is he an earlier version and if not how is he alive after season 10 for example

The way his personality flipped on a dime like that was just genius acting from Sacha Dhawan, he seemed so giddy to get to be himself again and pull off another diabolical scheme!

I loved it too! I really didn't see it coming. The whole episode I was like, "I like this O person. He seems really nice I hope nothing bad happens to him." And then the Master twist happened seemingly out of no where. And I say "seemingly out of nowhere" going back and rewatching, you can definitely see all the bits of foreshadowing. The spymaster line, the way O seemed so interested in the Doctor, or even the way he responded to the creatures by saying, "Oh wow. But why would they do that?" The way Sacha delivered that line made it seem like O wasn't surprised or scared at all, but I didn't catch it initially because of the intensity of everything else that'd just happened. O's reveal was already good on paper but Sacha made it BRILLIANT.

Daniel Holleman I agree with you because usually me and my parents figure out that it’s the master last minute and this took us by full surprise and i was thinking the plane was fake when his tardis was flying and when there is an actor who can play good but turn bad in the snap of your fingers, is a good actor especially if they turn into it and you can feel that change as well.

@@kevin10001 Eh. Simms didn't feel like the classic Master. Nor did Missy, for that matter. But that's kind of the point - the Master's personality changes when he regenerates just like the Doctor's does. This incarnation is particularly petulant and prone to mood swings.

"I did tell you to look for the SpyMASTER". I know it didn't work for some people, but Sacha Dhawan's reveal in 'Spyfall' totally hit me like a ton of bricks. Is it just me that really likes Tennant little hissy fit at wilf? It shows the vanity that Tennant had but he still has the overwhelming sense of duty to do the right thing. He believes this body and mind he has could be so good for the universe but he refuses to let anyone die for him so he gives it up anyway. Really shows his sense of right and wrong for me

I have mixed feelings. Love the character moment & all the development that led to it, but I do kinda feel like Tennant - Tennant, not Ten! - deserved better in a weird way. He brought so much joy to the whole experience of *being a Whovian* that the whole Lonely God downfall arc that served the character so well also seemed... almost insulting to the actor. It's not a fair criticism.... it was all incredibly well done & I do love it for the most part. But it does kinda leave a bad taste in my mouth, too.

the Missy reveal didn't shock me as much as the O reveal. i think it was because Missy was already kind of chaotic and mischievous before the reveal whereas O was a complete personality shift. Like we saw him as this cute awkward slightly bumbling but endearing tech genius guy but then the shift from that to the reveal i was literally there screaming "WHAT THE F*** SHUT UP" at my TV. bear in mind i had just come home from work at a busy restaurant on New Years Day so i was tired and annoyed this woke me up big time. Its the more recent version of the Derek Jacobi Master reveal and i love that reveal like you because of Jacobi's performance and Tennant's performance as well but honestly O was a literal bolt out of the blue.

Joe Clayton that was a great season and the first full season of classic era I got it also shows how the master can manipulate the matrix so in this last season he could have done it again with the timeless child reveal cause he stated in the episode he wanted to emotionally break the doctor and the "reveal" we go would do that cause it would make her rethink her whole existence even if it was true and it was the rani or romana or another timelord other then the master

SoraKingdom3 Sacha master is a head scratcher cause how can the master be alive after season 10 and if it was an earlier version they never explained where in the time line he was from some of this could be said for Ruth's doctor as well cause they never explained where in the doctor's timeline she was from but it was heavily implied she was before William hartnell by console room and not knowing the sonic screwdriver that wasn't introduced until the 2nd doctor and sacha wasn't that good as the master

@@kevin10001 I didn't mind that much because... Well, in New Who, the Master always come back, even though he shouldn't be able to. I don't remember exactly how ended the Master at the end of season 4, but it did felt like he should have died for good, because coming back as Missy. And from what I heard, it wasn't that different in the classic (but don't quote me on that one, I barely know the classics)... So yeah, it's kind of a running gag with the Master. The fact she already named herself the Doctor, and has the police box Tardis (which got stuck in this form AFTER Hartnell stole it) make me feel she might not be from before the 1st Doctor. Same thing with the Screwdriver, once 13th named it, her reaction did implied she knew what it was, just not recognized it's appearance. I think her place in the timeline will be further explored during the next season, as the season 2b theory wasn't debunked yet.

see the reason I personally love the twist in utopia so much is because we see the fob watch and it calls back to family of blood. it’s a sudden reveal, sure, but what makes it work is the moment just before when he goes ‘oh this old thing...’ and its the damn watch that we all recognise. It’s great theming too because the family of blood was about how dark the doctor can be and about running away from himself in a lot of ways. so the setups there for us to see the fob watch and know there’s a lot of darkness inside there. it really makes the whole thing work on an extra level

Russell T. Davies was great at Easter Eggs. I knew the Cybermen v. Dalek crossover was coming because in post credit promo at the end of the pen-pen-ultimate episode there was 1sec (at most) showing a soldier being shot and his skeleton being outlined - Dalek style. I knew then what was coming. (And loved it!) Also, though he denies it, Mister Saxon IS an anagram of Master No. X and there may well have been ten actors playing the master by then. The classic series got a lot of twists too, many of them are master reveals. I wont say the stories so you wont be spoiled in case you didn't see them yet, but especially Ainleys master had a tendency to be in some sort of disguise for an episode or two, and I usually didn't recognize him before the reveal. Also notable would be the watchers identity in logopolis and the twist at the end of the key to time. My number one spot for the classic series would be the twist in "the enemy of the world" that is the explanation why salamander is able to see earthquakes in advance. That was a great one.

Yes Utopia number one! I remember watching this one and like you say watching this sweet, warm, bumbling character change so suddenly was just so good! At the time I hadn't seen much classic Who but I imagine like most people in the UK, my parents had grown up watching it. So I'd heard about the Master (and hiding behind the sofa when the Daleks came on - it was a real thing), and hearing my mum gasp and squeal really added to the twist. I don't think I could do an entire list, but one twist I really enjoyed was from Series 9 and it was Sleep No More. The episode itself was a bit meh but that ending twist where, Rasmussen is actually a Sandman and his been using the episode to send the electronic signal out to turn everyone into Sandman. It's just so unnerving. Especially his last line of 'You've got something just there, in the corner of your eye' and that laugh at the end. God just thinking about it sends a shiver down my spine.

The main difference it made having a bit more classic who knowledge was that as soon as Derek Jacobi pulled the watch out I went "oh fuck, it's going to be The Master isn't it...". People not getting the Missy thing surprised me because that is about the only thing in any show I ever predicted in advance. The Missy short for Mistress connection sunk in for me a minute or so after she introduced herself.

I can think of a few good twists in classic Who. 1. The reveal of the Time Lords at the end of The War Games 2. The end of Genesis of the Daleks 3. The end of The Key to Time 4 the Valeyard

@@cicada.and.pomegranate - I'd say it is a plot twist, given that the whole episode (particularly the last 15 minutes) is built up to Vincent being saved and history being changed. The lack of twist *is the twist.* It's really nicely done.

LOVE the list videos! Completely agree with your number one. I personally would have included The Face of Bo. Not that it was groundbreaking or anything-it would be on the lower end. But it hit me harder than some of the others you mentioned. The number two I don't remember getting that worked up about. I think my expectations for the Fiftieth started and ended with Eleven and Ten riffing on each other, and I wasn't excited for another incarnation to muddy the waters.

An unpopular opinion here, but I love Sleep No More and the reveal of Rassmussen as a sandman is one of my favourites in the show. It is very much an Inside No. 9-esque reveal, as is the whole episode, somewhat unsurprising with Shearsmith appearing, and the reveal of the sandman Rassmussen is just [to me at least] a glorious crescendo of unease to the small clues that something is off throughout the episode [certain camera angles, the lack of an opening title sequence and Rassmussen's different personalities in the episode and as a sandman].

Great list, nice birthday present. One correction: the drums the master hears has a four beat rhythm. It represents the beating of a time lords two hearts (lub-dub lub-dub). I have to agree with your number one. Jacobi really sold the whole reveal. Too me the reveal of Ruth was #2. Starting with The Family of Blood we knew about time lords have a way of hiding their true selves inside something (a pocket watch in that case). That was our only hint for Jacobi's Doctor (but I missed it also). In Ruth's case they could not have her carry a pocket watch, because it would be too big a hint pulling the same trick 3 times. I thought making the device an emergency alarm button was brilliant. I suspect you ranked it #5 because almost no one liked the reveal of the Rest of Ruth's origin.

If you’ve listened to Big Finish, then you’ll love the War Doctor and the War Master even more. The War Doctor boxsets with the late John Hurt was the first ever boxsets I ever got from Big Finish and is why I still to this day buy their new boxsets when they come out, and I love it! Not only can we hear John Hurt’s amazing voice, we also get to hear what it was like in the Time War and how much pain the Doctor had to go through in it. And then we have the Jonathon Carley stuff, which I think is also amazing because in those boxsets we get to hear the War Doctor in his early days, even as far back as right after he regenerated in Night Of The Doctor. And Jonathon is just so good as the War Doctor. The War Master in Big Finish is just so much fun, I LOVE it! Derek Jacobi does a phenomenal job at portraying the Master and the writers behind these boxsets are just so good (the writers in Big Finish are generally amazing at their job, but they do an exceptionally great job at the War Master Boxsets!) the writing along with the acting by Derek was what made this incarnation my favorite Master of all time! Both the War Master and the War Doctor is worth the money and then some! (Just as a taste of what the boxsets are about, the latest boxset of the War Master is him going on trial with the judges being a new, mysterious race of Time Lord legend and the Master has to convince the judges that he is innocent, and (this is not a spoiler since he is on the cover art) as a last resort, the War Master calls the tenth Doctor to help him and we finally get to hear the tenth Doctor and the War Master reuniting! Phenomenal stuff! Anyway, that was my ramble on two of the best series of Big Finish!

Does the reveal of the Bad Wolf count as a twist? We had been wondering what it meant all season.
@natsmith303
@natsmith303 4 года назад
I'm struggling to call that a twist, more like the revelation of mystery. In my mind, to count as a twist it has to be contrary to what we had previously believed. If it had been implied that, say, Omega or someone like that was leaving the Bad Wolf messages, but THEN it turned out to be Rose, I'd call that a twist. As-is neither we nor the characters had any idea.

I'm glad s12 Master reveal wasn't here. I think for a twist to be a good twist it should make you excited and almost shocked even if you knew it was coming. On my every rewatch, most of the ones they've listed never fail to get a strong reaction from me, but that Spymaster reveal was already spoiled to me (thanks to dw official ig account), and the episode did nothing to get me excited for the return of one of my fav characters.

Cult of Skaro reveal should be higher in the list than Missy reveal being The Master, to me it was obvious. Everything with Moffat wasn't done well, he keeps spoiling everything to early. Davies knew what he was doing, the 4 knocks, established as the Master, twisted to possibly being the return of the Timelords, then as a final twist... it's Wilf and Bad Wolf, is Bad Wolf the Doctor, a new enemy? Oh the return of the Daleks? Or even specifically the Dalek Emporer?... No it's Rose with the Time Vortex in her head. 4 knocks should be number 2, Bad Wolf should be number 1. Derek Jacobi as the Master, close 3rd place. Can't believe you didn't even have Bad Wolf in your list?!

1. I completely called Missy. It wouldn't have made by list. 2. Jo Martin wouldn't have either to be honest. It was already done and I don't like that it sets up and supports. She's a great actor and a decent Doctor, but I'm just left going "eh". It was executed pretty well though, that I can't quite argue with. 3. My brother and I noticed 11's jacket too! I loved that retcon 4. Rassilon is one of the best twists ever! But, the 4 knocks take the cake over it. Such a masterful subversion. 5. Your top two are probably mine, yeah. I can't remember. Had capaldi been cast at the point of the reveal of John hurt? I honestly don't remember being that excited or bemused by it. I'm wondering if I just assumed he would be the next doctor. I knew about Yana being the master. I don't even remember how I knew because I didn't watch any dr who you tube videos or wasn't involved in any doctor who pages or forums back then. I did knew exactly what the face of boe meant by his dying words, I knew that Derek jacobi would play the master, and then regerate into simm, and simm would continue to be the master, I didn't know that jacobi would be presented as a human, but as soon as I saw jacobi, it didn't take me long to cotten on what was going on. I knew what his yana related too. I think someone must have told me. Now when I hear spoilers and theories I just take them with a pinch of salt and they don't even stay in brain. Example I did read about sasha being cast as the master, but I'd completely forgotten I'd read it until I saw the reveal. That's how much I don't pay attention to this stuff now. I wish I hadn't have known, but if I hadn't have known, at the time of reveal I wouldn't have idea who the master was. I only knew because someone told me along with info about who exactly the master was, so it might not actually have impacted me that much if it hadn't have been spoiled. O being revealed as the master is one of favourite twists. The scult of scaro also took my breath away. I honestly didn't spot that razor was the master. Again I knew he was returning so it should have been obvious, but I didn't spot it and still found it exiting. Not really a twist but I was very existed by both capaldi's and bakers appearance in the day of the doctor.

One twist I'd put in for classic Who is Adric actually dying. While he may not have been the first, companions didn't die. They always got away or where saved by the Doctor.
