Remember that fish keeping is truly a fluid situation and what works for one set-up might not work for another. Do plenty of research gathering information from several reliable sources before making any changes in your aquarium.

Ben, I am pretty new in the hobby. I've watched tons of videos. You are the least judgmental expert out there and I appreciate that about you. Some content creators are very insulting to those of us who have made mistakes along our journey. Keep being you. 😀

Worst thing I did in the hobby was all the money spent on chemicals instead of just buying fish that work with the water that comes out of my faucet

Back in the 90’s before RU-vid I bought my 1st tank. 55 gallons. I knew nothing. I set the tank up with a cheap HOB. Let it sit over night and went back to the store the next morning and bought 55 fish. I had heard you could keep 1 fish per gallon! Needless to say it didn’t end well. I persisted and learned by making mistakes. I killed a lot of fish! I persisted and still keep fish today

Ben, Two mistakes I made was add to many fish to soon and got a huge ammonia spike that eventually ended up killing the fish. I also did a huge water change and cleaned out all the filtration at the same time. I ended up killing the bacteria and same for a huge ammonia spike. Uggh the things we learn from mistakes.

Great video Ben. Love those plants inside your African cichlids haps tank. Are they plastic or live plants. I've never seen those anywhere.

My biggest mistake was getting distracted when I was doing a water change. I thought I had stopped the siphon from running, I left hung over the side of the tank while I went into another room…..its must have restarted because when i came back into the living room sometime later, the carpet was soaking wet and my 4 foot tank only had a couple inches of water in it. I think I must have been about 14 at the time and I not only remember not being very popular with my parents, but the smell of damp carpet soaked in aquarium water sticks in my memory.

My most stupid move was getting into an argument with an employee who used to work in a pet shop. He came into my office and put bleach in my 110 gal discus tank. Came to work and everything was dead. He was fired that morning.

When I was 10 years old, I had my 1st fish tank…a little 10G. Had some cool tiny sharks. Went to a fish store with my dad and bought some crabs. Later went to my tank and a crab had a shark in his claws. I started banging on the side of the tank and I guess I was banging too hard and put my hand through the tank.

Not shutting off the water that's refilling the tank because you get distracted with the other tanks lmao. I almost overflowed one of my 75 gallons because I was busy watching the 7 other tanks lmao

I plugged a couple things to the same outlet and then went on vacation. Those 2 extra plugs tripped the breaker after I left and I came home to a stagnant tank of mostly dead fish

Left siphoning unattended and it sucked up a rummy nose tetra; its head got stuck in tube and it died and I took a decoration out of my tank and didn't check if fish was in the hollow spaces; lost my yellow watchman goby that way

I installed a low budget Co2 generator that didn't come with a pressure value, woke up to the horror of its contents being over pressurized and dumping itself into the aquarium, a dramatic scene, after a good few water changes all was back to normal with no losses and i tried again with the generator, after all it must of been my error, right?, read the instructions carefully again set it all up and seemed to be running fine for a few days then the inevitable happened again. How does it go 'insanity is trying the same thing again and expecting a different result' went straight into the trash after that.

I did a large water change and forgot to put in the dechlorinator until I noticed the fish acting funny. Luckily, I noticed it quickly and saved most of the fish. :(

Here's a story I was 2 yr & My dad had a fish tank One morning he woke up and walked by the tank , and there I was plunging all the important house insurance documents into the aquarium 😮 The aquarium was black with ink and the fish were jumping out 🫣😱

I bought an inexpensive Chinese 200 watt digital heater that cooked my 55 gallon tank killing all my 31 fish. I now run a Eheim heater with a INKBIRD heater controller and hopefully I will never experience that loss again.🤞

Stupidest thing I have done was change 75% of the water in a planted tank with buffering aqua soil to lower the PH. Tap water is 7 PH, with the aqua soil tank was 5.8. A day later all the fish died :( The instant spike to 7 was too much of a rapid change.
