As someone who used to work with clay _a lot,_ some of these "techniques" and the misuse of tools/not using correct tools really drove me crazy. That being said, I do appreciate how accessible the creators made most of these projects. It's too bad that a lot of them won't work or will fall apart without modification (that beginners wouldn't know how to modify).
@martastasia
@martastasia 3 года назад
Can you share some tips then ? If we want to try the projects with better directions, please help ! Thanks. What about the tools ? I know lots of professionals would recommand using things we have at home instead of buying specific tools, because these ones cost a lot of money. When you're a straight beginner, it's good to know some alternative.
@ashe767
@ashe767 3 года назад
@@martastasia I can give a few tips. First, an issue with most of the projects is that they roll the clay too thin, which is a problem for a couple reasons. One is that, in my experience, clay is sticky. Really sticky. Far stickier than you might expect, once you adhere it to a surface by rolling it out. Even on plastic or vinyl, I've had sheets of rolled clay stick down so bad that the piece couldn't be pulled up without being destroyed. The thinner it is, the harder it is to pull up. (A quick fix for this is water - mist your work surface before rolling the piece. It won't hurt the outside, since polymer clay won't mix with water, but try not to get any IN the clay or you'll get some nasty bubbling while it bakes.) The more substantial issue, though, is that baked clay doesn't have a lot of strength to it. There are two consistencies of baked clay, depending on the brand/line you're using. Original Sculpey and Sculpey III for example become solid but brittle, whereas Fimo and Premo retain some flexibility/give. If you roll Sculpey III thin, it's just going to break. If you roll Fimo too thin, you're in a slightly better place, but it will be uncomfortably bendy and still prone to snapping if it bends too far. Clay is spendy, and it's tempting to roll it thin to save a little clay, but you will be disappointed if your project doesn't hold up (as I have been, far too many times). A couple other things: Please please please don't use nail polish on your clay!!! It eats at it and will make the outside nasty and sticky over time. The idea of putting spices like pepper in the clay makes me uncomfy, but after brief googling, it seems like that may be a valid technique. Still, do your own research and don't put things in/on the clay unless you're sure it won't react badly. It's sketchy that they tell you how long and what temp to bake the projects at (and it's always the same). Bake according to package directions! Thicker pieces will take longer. Finally, a note on tools: You're right that if you've not worked with clay before, you should be resourceful and use what you have on hand as makeshift tools! It's part of why I called the video so accessible. HOWEVER, if you're planning on working with clay more than just a one-off project, I seriously recommend investing in a basic tool set (roller, blade, some smoothing tools, etc). Compared to the cost of clay, it's not that big of an investment, especially if you use a craft store coupon. I promise the tools will make your life 27 times easier, you will be shocked. Anyways, hopefully this helps! I have some more specific nitpicks (you CANNOT make a keychain like they show in the last project, I'm legitimately surprised they were able to get a shot of it before it fell apart) but hopefully the tips help you troubleshoot the projects accordingly :)

Please don't put spices in polymer clay. Some can react to it and make it super wet. Certain paints will be sticky long after you've set them to dry. Nail polish WILL eat away at clay. Please don't use it on polymer clay items! Don't use these with food, don't bake or put raw clay on any surface that food will touch. It's a disaster waiting to happen. I've worked with clay for years, please trust me on this.

I really enjoyed your selection of colors and your marbling technique. I would like to make a suggestion or two. The cork used as backing on the first coaster technique will stay on better if you use super glue instead of hot glue. Then I noticed that you show that everything is baked at 275 degrees for 20 minutes...not all polymer clay can be baked at that temperature or that amount of time. I would put a disclaimer in stating to bake at manufacture's recommended temperature.

1) Please DO NOT use nail polish on your polymer clay projects! 2) When making a mixed or marbled rainbow, remember that blending any two (or more) secondary colors will make brown. So if you over mix it (*ahem* like they did) it will look muddy and not rainbow-y. Try to stop BEFORE it gets to the muddy point. 3) Red polymer clay tends to leave color on hands and work surface. When you go to grab another color after using red, it’s going to rub off on that color. So after using red, wipe your hands and work surface with rubbing alcohol. In a pinch, I’ve found that hand sanitizer and a paper towel work too. 4) Polymer clay tends to pick up bits of dust, lint, and pet hair not matter how clean your work surface is. Especially white clay. You can fix it by wiping you finished project (before baking) with a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol. It takes off the top layer and usually the bits of lint and cat hair with it. 5) if you don’t trust yourself to do little detailed painting, get some cheap dotting tools on Amazon. Look for “nail art” dotting tools. They’re the exact same as painting or sculpting dotting tools, but are often cheaper for some reason. Getting neat, clean lines is often easier with a dotting tool than a brush if you aren’t used to brush painting. Plus you can make perfect little polka dots and with practice, cute and lovely mandalas. All for $4-$7 for a set of double ended dotting tools.

@Annie_Annie__
@Annie_Annie__ 10 месяцев назад
@@AngelicaM1988 It could be a metallic gold acrylic paint, but I think it might be a product called Liquid Leaf or some similar enamel gold paint. As pretty as Liquid Leaf is, I wouldn’t use it on polymer clay. It’s petroleum-based and could eat away at the clay. You might be able to get away with using Liquid Leaf or another enamel paint _if_ you seal the clay really well (at least 2 coats) with a clear sealant that works with both polymer clay and enamel paints, but you’d probably have to experiment to see what works. Your best bet would be to use a good quality metallic gold acrylic paint.

Lilly the cost of the clay they used alone is $15-30, depending on the brand you use. Cork, glue, gold paint, cutting blade, varnish- all had a price. If your going to do it as a project you like, great, but polymer clay is not a craft that you save money by making household things. You could buy agate slices pretty cheaply (seconds that might have tiny flaws or chips are even cheaper and no one notices the chips- you can get them for a dollar or two a slice), and do the rest and it would probably cost a third of both the store bought and the clay version.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but some warnings in case you do try some of these: The brand of clay shown in the first few clips actually isn't strong enough for these to last long. Real polymer clay artists don't recommend taking Sculpty clay thinner that 1/4-1/2 inch. If you're going to buy polymer clay, do some research and see which brand is best for your project. Also- the glaze they use is compatible with the clay, however it can easily be removed with hot water. If you use nail polish instead, the clay will become sticky and dissolve over time. I wish you the best of luck with your crafting, but please understand that some of us are upset because these projects simply wouldn't work the way they are shown to.

Elena Bleyer - thanks for explaining. I will definitely do some research before trying these. Thanks.

Varathane gloss or matte finish, the rest peel off in time or discolour.

I think it's gilding paint. That has a very believably metallic finish.

What clay is used ? Tell the brand
@elenableyer5737
@elenableyer5737 4 года назад
Im a Collector The brand used seems to be Sculpty clay, however that is not strong enough to last. If anything I'd recommend Premo or Fimo polymer clay.
