10 Buck Test Bench - Phonograph Idler Wheel Fix 

I tried it on my old V-M 522's idler wheel and it worked great! 10/10 I am going to recommend this to everyone I know with this problem.

I sent an idler wheel for an (then) unknown brand turntable to Russell Industries in NY for rebuilding.They are nice people.A RU-vid man kindly put me onto them.

Cool- I will try this! I am running into the same issue with an old hardened idler wheel. At some point though time is money too, and if I can spend $40 and save myself a lot of hassle and headache- it is well worth it. But I think I enjoy the challenge to see how resourceful one can be. Success at DIY projects usually hinges on one's understanding of materials it seems. Hanging out in the garage can teach a person a whole lot about these things! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the vid. I recently had two Dual 10xx series decks with this exact problem. I solved it by clamping the idler in the chuck of my drill, then applying fine (400) grit sandpaper as it spun. Took a little while to strip off the hardened outer edge, but the rubber below was plenty pliable enough. As you say, it is criminal that places charge 40 notes or more for a part like this.

We used xylene for idlers in tape machines - but you don't want to soak an idler in xylene overnight - it'll dissolve. I have a Stanton 500 cartridge fitted with a 7 mil stylus for 78s - I think I got it from KAB Electro-Acoustics. I love the stereo static - here's a tip - connect both sides of the stereo cartridge together for mono - you'll get about 3 to 6 db static noise reduction.

Can't wait to try this little trick tonight.

Two years on, how'd it hold up? If it lasts a year, or even 6 months, I think one could save up in the meantime.
