It's easy to identify a petrol engine that is reliable: study the average price for a second hand short block, sold as is. If its under $500 in a city, then the chances are they can't give them away, because no one needs one. So if you know the right people, you could easily get a short block for nothing. Diesel engines are 'special' because the market is distorted to over price everything diesel. Users would be well advised to purchase a donor vehicle for ongoing repairs. Petrol vehicles with engines that regularly sell as is, for $2000 plus, should be avoided. Its not a bad idea to look at the price of replacing a headlight assembly, and the labour costs involved in replacing a timing belt, clutch or coolant pump for your model and year. Some famous name vehicles are not worth a professional repair. And for the love of sanity: OEM is rarely the best possible replacement for any component. OEM is the cheapest component that the manufacturer could source at the time. After market components are OFTEN better quality than OEM, but not always.
Totally agree! It hard sometimes OEM isn’t available so you have to go aftermarket parts. It’s a hit or miss if it fits just right. Diesel engines are great but the minute you have problems be prepared to cough up money . We have seen water get into the fuel system and cost a couple thousand dollars to treat the problem
So many wrong videos and photos showcasing the engine the narrator is talking about. Prime example... The MB OM617... Near the end, starts showing pictures and videos clips of the om605... Wtf?
