All good points, Jeff. I just got rid of ties that were too wide, which were in style during the 1990s. My rule is that you should be able to wear everything in your closet.
@@TheStyleOG Skinny ties were stylish - maybe they still are? But did you ever see a heavy man wear a skinny tie? Especially with a two button suit/sport coat that shows a lot of shirt and tie? Looks like a string on a balloon. A tie should be 3.5 inches or 3 inches if it's a knit tie. Only a thin guy can wear a skinny tie - he would look like a clown in a 4 inch wide tie. So endeth the lesson!
Only issue that I have with the “1 year“ rule, is that the type of job I have doesn’t require me to be that versatile in my daily wardrobe, so getting rid of classic dressier clothing would be wasteful. Also, here in Cali, sometimes we don’t get all of the “seasons”, so we don’t have the opportunity to rock the warm weather styles we invested in over the last 2-3 years.
Thanks for the shoutout OG! I'm guilty of T-shirts, old jeans, and old work clothes. I still have the long t-shirts that were popular in the early to mid 2000s. Those tees looked like we were wearing gowns!! I also have Southpole and The Source magazine jeans just in the closet taking up space. Still have 2 Footlocker polos from 23 years ago and some polos when I was a manager at a restaurant about 5 years ago. I'm definitely going to make a drop off at the GoodWill this weekend. Again thanks for the shoutout **Salute**
I'm 26 and I'll admit I just started getting rid of all of my graphic tees!! I only wear them to sleep or the gym now. Also no more ripped and distressed jeans for me
Dude knows what he's talking about. Just last year I was kinda forced to de-clutter my wardrobe. It feels so good to get rid of stuff that's just taking up space in your dresser/closet. "If you're not careful, the things you own will end up owning you".
Here are a few more items to jettison: 1) Outdated overcoats 2)gym clothes with holes in them 3) calf high gym socks 4) baseball caps with sweat stains 6) beanies with loud product marketing like “Banana Republic” 7) scarves that pill and shed 8) sweaters that itch. Great video as usual!!
I like the honesty in your video! I am 58, divorced and trying to up my game. I really appreciate your tips on style! I started throwing out clothes that just don't work these days. Thanks!
Hey OG, good advice as usual. I've been retired for 10 years and still have now my 12 year old black pinstripe suit. Classic cut, not too tight not too baggy. Has come in very handy for funerals. Still rocking my Florsheim wingtips too. Going to way too many funerals now.
"Addition by substraction." Only legends speak the truth like that. And only sophisticated legends can pull off that turtleneck - suit jacket combo so well. OG's class is off the charts. Salute, my man! o7
One of the most interesting things I’ve listened to in a minute. “Through out, anything you’ve not wore in the previous calendar year”. That’s one that many of us who have too many clothes is very hard to do! If you’re willing to do this, first, ask any friends, or fam, if they would like the item of clothes you’ve decided not to wear, for this purpose alone. If it’s still in great repair, try to sell it on a site, like eBay. If once you’ve exhausted all options, donate it to your local Goodwill, because despite of your taste in style. There will ALWAYS be somebody out there who, “at the time of its popularity”, couldn’t afford that item of clothing, and will cherish it like they had just bought it as it were new!
Good, practical advice. My wife and I used to swap summer and winter clothing (from closet to attic and vice versa). It finally got old, so I kept a few items of each in my closet and gave the rest away. The wife hasn't narrowed hers down enough yet for that, though. :)
I appreciate your content. The purpose of your video clearly matches the title. You don’t just make videos to make them fit to some product you’re getting paid to promote. It’s a breath of fresh air.
Completely agree about the underwear. Once the elastic is stretched out or the you can no longer read the writing on the tag, time to get rid of them! I cleaned out my closet of jerseys, old workout clothes that no longer fit and cycling/mtb riding clothes.
Truth told all the way through. Glad I found your vid. I need to reduce those “haven’t worn in a year” clothes. And tossing my last pair of baggy jeans TODAY‼️
Yep OG. I have plenty of I hope I can fit clothes. That's why I'm taking your advice tomorrow and start donating my clothes, replacing them with I can fit my clothes! Great video! Keep up the good work.
Underwear is a hard one todo. I went thru a purge this winter. I kept a couple of “stretched” boxer briefs as transition pieces to my new underwear. Now that spring is here time to purge oldies once again. Good advice, O.G.
I am just leaving the military where it's uniform all the time. All my clothes and styling is from the early part of the decade. I'm glad I found your channel
I’m a new subscriber and really enjoying your videos. I religiously wear a tee underneath any button up shirt. In fact, I don’t feel put together unless I have a great crisp tee underneath.
This is one of the dopest channels I came across. You really shaped my thinking when it comes to my wardrobe and just keeping my grown man swag on point. Appreciate ya!
Daily rotation on t-shirts, underwear, and socks are always monitors by me every month after washing them weekly! Whenever I subtract them out of my rotation I use them for a major purpose besides my worn-out underswear which is manditory! My old socks are my buffing rages for my shoes in rotation being either cleaned or polished or both! My old t-shirts are used for rags to clean my truck rims and tires. My elders taught me whenever something gets worn-out there is always a purpose for using it for something else to save money! *(O.G. CONTINUED SUCCESS)* *(YOUR TOPICS ARE GREAT)* *(AS ALWAYS O.G. SALUTE)*
Mr. The Style O G....oh my God your Videos and sense of style are everything ...thank you for helping these Brothers out.We have great men out here who just sometimes need a little help....love from my beautiful island of Jamaica 🇯🇲🇯🇲💙 and my husband's city New Orleans. Keep on doing what you doing ,we appreciate you.
In the beginning of the summer of 2018 I took every article of clothing hanging in my closet and turned the hangers around so the end with the point on the hanger was facing out. I then took every folded shirt and everything else above on the shelf and put a sticker (red dot) right under the front of the collar. At the beginning of summer 2019 I got rid of EVERY article of clothing that still had the hanger facing the wrong way and everything that still had the dot sticker on it. 50% of my closet went buh bye. It felt really good AND I got to shop for a few more things I needed to fill out my wardrobe. Try it. Trust me it works. I let my wife go in and take everything out no questions asked so I wouldn't be tempted to keep anything.
Somehow I missed this video when you posted it two years ago but the message is timeless! (For me, it is your best video: I have between 500 and 600 shirts and close to 1,000 neckties and gravitate towards the same 50 to 60 in each category-shirts & ties-that I wear over and over. The rest take a ton of space.)
I just moved in April and got rid of almost all of my clothes and got new ones. I like to keep it causal. Polos, basic t shirts, chinos and jeans. Also a few button up shirts
Another perfect list! Ha ha. Glad to say I actually go through my wardrobe in Spring and Fall and toss or refresh items. I’ll add regarding that “hope I can fit into them later” category, I got into the worry that I’d not be able to find or afford an item later but what happens is if you do slim down you feel better going out and finding new stuff anyways. You make it happen. Really enjoying this channel!
some great tips, should try shooting in a diff location with a lil going on at the back, maybe a flower vase, some books or something.. make it a lil more lively
That’s what people used to tell me about my turtle necks about eight years ago don’t get rid of anything at all comes back style is like a revolving door goes in and out always comes back except that cross color bullshit
A year ago I revamped my entire wardrobe.. I’m on my last phase and that’s the my suits. Everything including sock, draws undershirts and tee shirts were replaced. Shoes and sneakers were also replaced and I got enough to make even rotations on all my clothes
I have to admit it took me quite a while to finally give up my square toe dress shoes. Oh well, I guess the saving grace is that I've owned only one pair of those shoes lol! Salute!
My father told me decades ago that there is no such thing as a square toe dress shoe. Of course, I was wearing a pair with a blazer when he told me...for the last time.
Finally got rid of my “hope it will fit” items about six months ago...cathartic. Be happy in your body. Hanging on to those items is like saying I will like who I am soon instead of like myself now. Closet and soul are more at ease.
Man, Jeff. The universe sent this video to me at a perfect time. I promise I was JUST about to do a purge this week, getting rid of things I no longer wear or like. Thank you for this, this will encourage me to let go! Salute.
Thank you Jeff for the comment regarding the shoes. I always learn start with the feet first and I’ve kept at Matto all these years I’m 62 now. I’ve had a habit in a passive buying shoes that weren’t quite the right fit but why did they look good and I’ve learned the hard way only buy shoes that fit. I want to thank you for your channel it is help me I consider myself to be adapted dresser but always room for improvement thank you so much your friend Dr. Wilton White
Oh man, you walloped me with this list, and I found myself guilty of just about everything on your list, so much so that after viewing this video, I went right to work on it and have not turned back, so accept my thanks for setting me straight, 🤣I needed it.
Love the look of the black turtleneck with that jacket (which is my favorite)...I just have a question...notice that the upper arm area of the jacket (because of the sweater???) appears kind of tight. Never looks like that with your shirts? Is that the correct fit or should the jacket size be larger in the arm to accommodate sweaters?
Just discovered your channel, great stuff! You’re echoing all the things my wife has been saying for years.... and I’ve been slowly listening. Especially important as I’m pushing 50 but still very much young at heart.
This was all me last Spring I put all the sweaters I didn't wear last winter in the Goodwill bin, reducing the number. I also changed my fit; gettin grid of my XXL for XL slimmer fits. This fall i did the same with my summer tees; the "around the house"' Tees collection was getting big and I wasn't wearing them. into the good will bin. I just bought a whole new generation of socks because of holes :D and the same with undershirts and underwear. Its surprising how this stuff builds up in your wardrobe as time goes out without a good purge
I just recently did this and purged everything in my closet that either didn’t fit, was too worn or just didn’t like. The Salvation Army got quite the hall and I hate to say but some of the items I’d never worn!
The one year rule is incredible. When I instituted it with my wardrobe it cut my junk out really quick. Mostly, I got rid of ugly gifts given by other people (lol) but also it allowed me to get rid of the three button suit I had sitting in my closet. I don't like 3 button or double breasted suits, so the first suit I got rid of were my double breasted ones. But 3 button suits don't look good on me; the suit was purchased new and never worn - so I didn't want to get rid of it without having used it at least once. Ugh, right? I donated the 3 button suit to one of those stores that sell inexpensive donations (think salvation army) - hopefully somebody who could use it for their job interview got it. Better in their hands than in my closet Now, if you look at my closet, everything there has a purpose. Even the white pants - I need it for that one night a year where I might be on a cruise boat and they have the "wear white" event
If you're going into someone's home, take your shoes off. You'll bring all the dirt, grime, shit, pee, and all sorts of unpleasant stuff your feet have tread on.
What a look so mood style. I have really enjoyed this look and style. Great work on the video. Now I have to get ready to hit the club again both this video in style and then Delta Parole - Wasted Music Video that I had watched before this again since every night out I rock out to it first goes stunnin smooth, motivated me to be the man tonight. What are any of you other beautiful peoples hit the club songs?
All good points, Jeff -- but what I do first is to have those clothes, where I still like the fabric etc re-tailored (yes, even ties!) -- I have an excellent tailor who does perfect alterations.
Honestly, I've kept a particular Gucci-looking Suede pair with the intentions of putting taps on the heels. A decade's gone by and I finally wore them @ night ONLY because of the Vintage Gucci-swag revival. #that'sAllthey'reGood4
