I had a 15 year old Cockatiel that was my absolute BABY. In our okd house, when we put the oven to auto clean, (fumes are fatal to birds) we put her and her Budgie friend in a room far away with fans and shut the door. They were always fine! However, last year, we moved into a new house. It was time to auto clean the oven, so we moved the cockatiel, budgie, and our 3 canaries to the farthest room in the house, again, with fans, door shut and towel under the wedge. This is the sad part. Unfortunately, somehow, abd maybe it was the type of oven, but the birds were poisoned by the fumes. The budgie died first, to which we took immediate action and removed the rest of them from the house completely to get fresg air. Unfortunately then, two of the canaries passed, shortly followed by my dear Cockatiel. One canary survived because she struggles to intake air, thus not receiving a fatal amount of fumes (the breeder we received her from failed to care for her properly, we saved her). This was last week. So please, please, if you're auto cleaning an oven, if you can, remove the birds from the house completely, if you can. Keep the at a family member's for the day. Do not repeat my mistake. I miss my girl.
I'm so sorry about this! You even took precautions. But now everyone who reads this comment will know that fumes are efficient travelers. I recently moved and now have a self cleaning oven. I was excited and was definitely going to use it and soon. Now I know not to so you saved at least two birds (blue budgie and cockatiel). May those sweet babies rest in peace.
Thank you for posting this. I need to clean my oven soon. Now I know I should roll their cage out of the house when I clean the oven and air out the house completely before bringing them back in. Thanks for saving my birds!
Omg my birds have been in the kitchen the longest time! But, they're not dead or sick or anything. Whew! Edit: also since my cousin has allergies, and he lives with us, i can't put my birds in the house or train them/open the cage cause the feathers fly everywhere. So we had to put them outside that's fine right? But now I'm kinda scared bc our neighbors smoke.... but like i said my cousin has allergies so we can't bring them in... help someone😐😐
DO NOT PUT YOUR OVEN IN SELF CLEAN WITH YOUR BIRD IN THE HOUSE!!! Just learned this the hard way!! My conure died because if this, I don’t want this to happen to anyone else.
Sadly my house almost burned down, my beatiful parakeet smelled the smoke and woke us up as he was freaking out so we put out the smoldering item but sadly he didnt make it :(
Make sure you bond with that bird also because it’s very likely it may unfortunately outlive your grandpa and it would be terrible. If it didn’t have a decent bond with its future caretaker… Long live grandpa and birds!
@@givemeattention4163 They dont let them fly away though! I'm sure they dont want them to fly away and they to and try to catch them. Its a mistake to learn from and it is sad
I disabled the ceiling fan in my birdroom/bedroom right when I got them. By that I mean I cut off the cord that you pull to activate the fan then taped it up as well as covering any exposed metal on the fan so they couldn't access them. Now they actually love to run across the fan and hop from one part to the other so at least it still serves some purpose.
Thank you so much for the information. For mother's day my husband got me an Indian Ring Parakeet only two months old. It is like purple/bluish color is beautiful. Already has bonded me so much. I am so glad to discover your channel as I have learned so much especially about what to eliminate from my house. What I like the most about your videos is that they are simple and fun to see. In terms of my house things, the candles is the biggest challenge for me as I am the type that likes to have the house smell fresh all the time. But I have to do it for my birdie. I do have a question do you have any suggestions of what organic things I can use to clean around the house that is safe for my baby parakeet? Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks Evie
Thank you for making this video. I lost my budgie today due to candles. I was keeping Jinx ( my budgie) at my bf house for a week because I won’t be around to take care of him. My bf knows what to do but his mother didn’t. She burned candles around Jinx even when we specifically say not to. My bf wasn’t always around to monitor things Found him pass away this morning and pretty sure due to toxin. I miss my baby, hope he rest in peace.
Thx for the video! I am looking into getting a budgie. On one of your points you mentioned non-stick coatings being a danger to birds. My perents have one non-stick pan. They use it in the kitchen downstairs I’m planning on to keep them upstairs
We start disinfecting in the night since at that time we take our birds inside from the balcony (since there i not much darkness there to sleep and cats come sometimes) to sleep and we are too scared to even take the spray near them.
I’m feeling bad for you going through all your comments now that you’re growing your channel when you had 400 when I subbed you didn’t have as much work but keep up the good work you don’t need to do anything to my comment you already have enough work 👍🏻😄
Im glad I dont use air fresheners or candles We only have one plant but the birds are never in the same room as it the only thing is my birds used too be in the paint room but I didn’t get too have a say in it 😐 but I didn’t care what my family said i moved them and they haven’t been in there since🙂.
Thank you so much Live Laugh Birds!! This is really helpful because in two weeks I am getting a bird and I do NOT want any of these things around my house!!
My bird almost went bald and she was slowly dying so we separated her from the cage. But her partner, after few days, died from a seizure, his name was Rio. Bald burd was Raven. Raven died after few hours, also of seizure. I do not understand why, until now
Me: wants budgie rlly bad studies rlly hard all about them and even convinces parents Her: no nonstick items in ur house hold Me: and that is how all my dreams were crushed in one night
When we got our birds we went to our local thrift store and grabbed a few mismatched stainless steal pots and pans! You may be able to find some on craigslist that you can pick up while practicing social distancing.
Hey Elle! If you see this any tips for me? I’m getting a bird soon, and I have watched tons of your videos but I can always learn more. Anything I should know? Or anybody else have anything?
@@taekwondogirl9779 Alright, I'll list a few more uncommon topics. - *Night frights.* Very common with small birds (especially cockatiels), night frights are an instinctive action when startled. The bird wakes up in confusion and begins flying around its cage. It can often cause injuries, unfortunately. Quick temperature changes, movement outside, flashes of light, and certain noises can all trigger a night fright. To prevent one, it's recommended to let a bit of light flow into the cage at all times. - *Hormonal behavior.* Especially important during the hormonal seasons (spring and fall), you never want to sexually stimulate your bird. This includes petting / stroking anywhere other than the head, giving mushy or warm food, having extended hours of sunlight, allowing your bird to regurgitate or show mating behavior with various objects, and giving it access to nesty areas. Bird tea can really help in these situations. - *Cage fillers.* Toys, perches, and vitamin-related objects can really engage your bird while it's in the cage. Small birds usually enjoy paper shredding toys, yucca wood kabobs, and other easy things to tear apart. Foraging toys are important too! As for perches, a large variety of texture and size will prevent your bird from getting foot-related problems. Natural wood perches can even be taken from trees outside, although there are specific requirements to clean the branch. Don't use any fabric, cotton, or toys with a frayed rope. - *Other supplies.* It's always best to have some kind of travel cage on hand, as well as a health kit to stop any bleeding. In addition, two pairs of bowls will really help you out when it comes to washing. - *Signs of illness.* Birds will naturally hide most sicknesses from plain view, as it makes them an easier target for predators. However, you can usually catch these if you know what to look for. This includes loss of weight, extra fluffed up feathers, appearing weak or stationery, not eating, discharge from unusual areas (eyes, mouth), throwing up, sneezing a lot, sleeping during the day, messy or unclean feathers, poor grip, and discolored poos.
I’ve took so many things from you like I told my mom about these since we have 6 birds soon getting another and like diffrent sticks because we only have regular sticks so me and my mom are gonna get like good sticks like how you have and I feed them a bunch of diffrent foods since we have a conure and 5 parakeets and we are going to get a white cockteil and we are gonna name it white but your tips help a lot
Awesome Video! Luckily I know most of these and don’t let my birds go near or do or whatever with them. I love my birds so much and would never let my birds suffer. This is very strange but my birds stay in our dining room. They are very fine with the frying pains. I’ve taken them to the vet they said my birds completely fine. So I use wet wipes to clean my birds’ cage. Can you tell me if that’s fine? Thx. Love your channel!
Hi Elle: Is there anything like a closed in bird bath. I have a parrot named Cherry and he loves having his morning bath but he makes a big mess mostly in his cage. I was thinking of something a little enclosed so he can splash all he wants and little to no mess. By the way you are very impressive how much you have learned. I could sent you a picture of him and I'm sure you would know what he is. Called him Cherry because he has blood red eyes. Thanks Rae.
Also narrow CUPS with water etc. left unsupervised are DANGEROUS. The birbs could lean in for a taste, fall and drown 😔 cause they can't get out. Thank you for this video, very useful! 🙏🙏🙏
Last month my budgie / parakeet Rio escaped..he was so smart. So my dad always goes outside and comes back inside every day. Rio watched my dad and when my Cousin came over, he escaped because I accidently left the door open. I miss Rio everyday even though I have another parakeet / budgie named Nile...I will always miss you Rio :(
My budgie flew outside when I opened the door because he wanted to follow me. I tried finding him but I couldn't find him the next day i found him in a willow tree outside my house and he was so glad to see me that he jumped on my hand and i was able to get him back inside. Now i am putting curtains Infront of my doors so he cant fly out as easily
When I let my bird out, I usually play a video of birds chirping with my tablet screen off, and my bird came out of the cage to chirp and my tablet died so i had to charge it, and my bird got curious and started chewing on it and I was never looking away so I was covering my hand over AND putting paper towel around the charger! 👍
Be fore I watch this, I hope fly tape is on this list because my bird got stuck in fly tape once and it was the worse thing ever cause she kept wiggling between the cage bars to get out to fly into it
If you are opening your window, especially without supervision, PLEASE add a fly net! In the case your bird wants to escape, the fly net will help keep it in, however you don’t want your bird chewing it so please be careful
thank you this was very helpful because my parents and I went into something that we probably should have thought a little bit more into and we got four small parakeets this was very helpful because I remember my mom saying wipe down all that dust with this Clorox and I was like okay give me a second I have to watch this video and now it's really helpful cuz also my birds like to escape and I like my window open so there's a screen on it also you have made sure my birds are safe because I do like to paint stuff and I had this painted birdhouse in The birdcage and I just barely took that out
Hmm I'm surprised my birds are still alive, because I did everything we are not supposed to do!🤦♀️😂😁 I will try not spray any chemicals that are harmful to them by the way I always leave a window open for my birds during the day so they breath fresh air but of course they are in their cage,
:( I hope your bird(s) get to come out of the cage often. They need lots of stimulation and space to fly around and exercise to be healthy, both physically and mentally. So I hope you just keep them in their cage when you have to, i.e to let some fresh air in for a bit or because you have to leave etc
So I’m 13 and thinking of getting a green cheeked Conure. What if I have a ceiling fan? Should I still get one? And I have 7 other family member some of which are under 5.
My friends bird cant fly anymore because it actually flew up and hit the fan :( hitting its wing. Thankfully that never happened to our birds and we always turn off fans before entering rooms with them :D
Hi Ella any tips or ideas of owning a cockatiel if you live in a flat and the kitchen and living room is in one space? in term of cent what about unscented tea light cancels for prayers or example? or a tea light made form wool and ghee? is that bad? any idea if detol is good to wipe things down to keep it clean or would else would you use?
I knew for 1,3,5 and 10.. I killed my squirrel with spray for killing spiders and other bugs.. R.I.P. for Kicha Love you so much Elle also I knew for the colorings because my granny was painting kitchen ,and left budgies there and at the morning they were dead.. 😞
Okay so I live in a one bedroom apartment alone. I just moved and I’m planning on getting a bird. I’ve been researching for 3 months now on safe places to place his cage. Should I put him in my room to keep him away from the kitchen? And when I do cook, what precautions should I take to make sure that fumes from the kitchen don’t touch him?
what about windex that ive made. i own reptiles and there in glass enclosures, so i have to clean it. all my windex has in it is water (70%) Vinegar (20%) & dish soap (10%). would that be harmful to a bird? what do i clean a birds cage with?
A charger is no harm.. 5 volts at 1-3 Amps won’t electrocute your bird… the worry is if they chew the high voltage cords such as those that your vacuum uses or live extension cords.
