I'm hopefully getting solar, 14.4kWh batteries, and a heatpump installed in February. I'm so excited! Your videos have really helped. I only have a small house with little roof space so we can only fit 2.5kWh of solar on it, but every little helps! 😃

Great video as always Gary. I'm hoping to get a heat pump in 2024 but for now, another bonus of solar is from banking the export payments over the summer months (in my case with Octopus, our energy supplier) and then using that banked money to pay for increased gas use over the winter. So in effect my solar system is paying for my home heating in the colder months.

Thanks Gary. What you're saying is absolutely true and I can vouch for it. We charge our car, cover our heat pump usage and run our house with solar and backup batteries. Not only are we prepared if the grid goes down but in the summer we sell so much energy back to the grid that it cuts our winter electric bill in half. We just got our electric bill for the period between Dec 15 and Jan 15, it came to $130. That's to drive our EV, heat our house and hot water and run all our appliances, most people pay that just in gas to drive their car for two weeks to a month. When you realize that for a good part of the year we don't pay for any of that it comes down to about $50 to $60 a month for energy and transportation. Keep up the great content!

Thanks for sharing this. It's one thing me communicating the many benefits, but it's quite another when people like yourself comment that the benefits are really there! I'm hoping to get an EV sometime this year, depending on prices. Hope 2024 is a good for you on the energy front as 2023 was!

@@mosfet500 As soon as I had solar I bought a plug-in hybrid which eliminated 90% of my gasoline use. Then I added 10 panels to my solar, bought an EV and replaced an old HVAC unit with a heat pump. Because of my robust solar production the heat pump has been a complete success. The EV has been a lot of fun but to tell the truth the plug-in hybrid is a more practical solution for the average household.

@@richardcoughlin8931Plug-in hybrids are a con, the worst possible compromise. The batteries & engines are too small which means when the battery is empty the engine has to work extra hard to haul around the dead battery, killing mpg. BEV is the go

@@richardcoughlin8931 The problem with hybrids, or anything with a tank for that matter, is that the pollution doesn't stop, the oil spills, extraction pollution, wars to protect oil interests and all the rest of it, they keep feeding the fossil fuel industry and until we get that monkey off our backs we'll be in trouble.

And during this January,s very cold but sunny days we have been using the electric fire to heat the lounge in the afternoon ( never thought that was ever going back on !), so no gas heating being used.

The vast majority of solar installs in the uk do not have reason 3 installed and most don’t know to ask until the first power cut and the inverter shuts down!!

I ended up at about seven reasons; Solar+battery will improve my heatpump payback it was the comfort of knowing my energy prices would always be small no matter what happened to gas or electricity markets It gets me off buying stuff from odious regimes It helped me decarbonise It adds some value to the house (these days) so payback is even faster I have an ev which it also helps It promotes solar - my neighbours and the people on footpaths near my house might be encouraged to get solar I can bang on about it to my friends and family😮

People should be looking forward to the arrival of the battery VAT exemption policy on February 1. Could you please help us analyze the installation scenarios and requirements for residential solar panel + battery storage under different circumstances? For example, if we already have solar panel but no batteries, or if wee already have batteries but want to increase the capacity, or if nothing has been installed yet, etc. what issues should we pay attention to?😊

Very good positive points but what is the average household usage daily to benefit from the solar cost. I've done the calculation for my usage which is low. It would take 40 years to pay a cheap system off

I'm all-in on domestic solar having installed my system last year. I have enjoyed and learned a huge amount from this channel, I recommend it - thank you, Gary. However, reason #1 - I roll my eyes when people talk about global warming caused by humans (i.e. AGW - to the point that it is anywhere close to being a threat to life) - that's a completely busted narrative (a total hoax) - when you dig just a little, you discover that CO2 is actually essential for life on earth and not a pollutant. I am actually pro-CO2 these days - it is literally plant food. I recommend Judith Curry's excellent book 'Climate Uncertainty and Risk' as a great starting point - very accessible to the layperson. And as for heat pumps... oh dear - I know a very experienced heating engineer (30+ years) who refuses to install them as they are quite problematic in many cases. Other than that, I agree!

Would be interested to learn more about the heat pumps and how they integrate with solar - I'm sceptical yet open-minded. If they were that good, the Government would not have to coerce and fine the manufacturers for not hitting Government sales targets - people would see the sense in buying them. Climate change is real of course (no one has ever said it is static to my knowledge) - once you look into AGW with a critical mind it's so obviously a psyop designed to scare and control people (see Climate Gate, Lindzen, Koonin et al.). Regardless of our respective views on humanity's impact on climate, we're all good on domestic solar. @@GaryDoesSolar

Gary, I love your videos, they are most helpful, however on this one you show images of dirty polluting power stations. This paints a clear picture, however the pedant in me (and ex Power Station Engineer) is slightly offended by the common misconception that the cooling towers are belching out nasty pollutants. That could not be further from the truth. The cooling towers emit extremely pure water vapout. It is the chimneys that produce all the nasties. Please leave images of 'polluting' towers to the uneducated tree huggers. Thanks and keep up the educating content.

Thanks for your kind words about my videos. The sad fact though, is that gas and coal plants are not-pollution free. @@JCML63 I understand where you're coming from (and cooling towers do an amazing job at cooling the water down so it can be heated again by fossil fuels). But those towers, whilst they might be clean themselves, exist purely as part of an overall dirty power station - and my photo was of an entire power station.

I have a Huawei sun2000 inverter and 2 Luna2000 batteries and BMS, but I can’t find out how to discharge to the grid at a specific time. When I ask myinstaller I just get the runaround, saying use the parameter settings, but this does not work to export to the grid, just to discharge to the house. Have you any suggestions, or places I could look to find out how? TIA

Reason 11. It shields you from the worst effects of adverse geopolitical events. The shock in energy prices during 2022 being a key example. In times of war, the value of self sufficiency and “everyone doing their part” is strongly amplified, and it applied a great deal to food in the 2nd world war with “dig for victory” campaigns. Those values also apply to energy, which would no doubt be severely rationed. If you have your own supply then there is less to worry about. Look around you, and ask yourself if current events are more likely to escalate or de escalate. People value safety and security, and keeping the lights on is fundamental to both of those features. They’ll invest a lot into products that give peace of mind.

My experience and observations is that energy performance has negligible impacts on property values. Location and property size are the biggest determining factors. As an example in my nearest big village: Property A, 99sq metres, EPC Band D, 30 year old kitchen and bathroom, £230000. Property B, 180sq metres, EPC Band D, modern kitchen bathroom and general decoration standards £275000. So with property A, if you invest £30000 on solar + heat pump + insulation, would it be worth £260000 when property B is advertised at £275000? Most people would probably think not in the uk.

It would to me, my cost savings with solar are a game changer, it costs us during our Catskill NY - USA winters ~$130 a month to charge our car, heat the house with mini-splits, heat hot water, fridge, freezer, etc. If people understand to value of renewables it's a no brainer, the ROI will reduce living costs substantially. The world is changing, technology dictates the future, people who don't embrace technology will pay for those of us who have learned to maximize it. What does it cost you a month to do what I've been doing? I'll be a lot more than $130.

@@mosfet500 I certainly recognise the value of renewables. My own costs for 120sq metre house and 15000miles of driving are negative for electricity, and those negative costs offset the cost of firewood and propane to a large, but not a total extent. The trouble is that in order to realise those benefits, I have to live in the house for at least the ROI period. The reason why is that the housing market in Aberdeenshire, Scotland does not put a sufficient value on energy performance. Essentially my energy performance investments would be written off if I invested today and sold tomorrow. Therefore if you think you’re going to move house in 5-10 years time, the housing market is a deterrent to renewable investment, not a reason. You’d think that players in the housing market would understand the value of energy performance. Indeed it’s a legal requirement to post an energy performance certificate with any sale or rental advert. But the cost of the survey for the energy performance certificate can be as low as £35. That cost should tell you everything you need to know about public attitudes to energy performance. That barely covers the cost of the admin let alone any on-site survey. As an example, one of my friends paid £150 to have their house valued, and they got a valuation report through the post. When they asked, essentially they were told that valuations where based on a google street view investigation! To be Frank, such surveys are about 85% accurate.

@@anthonydyer3939 Anthony, these are all teething pains, this is relatively new technology and those of us who have maximized the technological benefit of renewables are all ready reaping those benefits. I have neighbors who stubbornly continue to drive ICE vehicles, heat with oil and run conventional hot water heaters. Their monthly cost to live is four to five times mine. In twenty years those same people will be the exceptions, the minority. We'll see housing with PV exterior walls, windows and roofs and apartment complexes with large PV arrays on roofs that will even capture energy on moonlit nights. Right now I have so much PV that even on overcast days I can recharge my batteries and for several months of the year run with the grid off. People want to know what freedom and independence are? It's not be subjected to fluctuating energy prices, it's not being held hostage by the FF industry. Renewables afford individuals that, the more autonomous you become the less shackled you are. I'm living this, I know it for a fact, it's the 21st Century, there's a lot of bad but there's a lot of good if you know where to find it and how to implement it.

Thanks for sharing this, Anthony. As with any selling feature of a property, it has to be properly marketed (and a good estate agent, up on solar/battery technology should be able to do this). It might be too early for some, but more and more people are getting into solar (and talking with their friends and neighbours) - I think it won't be long that *not* having solar and battery might be seen as a negative. Maybe I'm being too optimistic about this reason in the video, but I see support in the comments here for it.

Sorry if this sounded aggressive, it wasn't me to be. We do need to be literal though. I am not disputing what you are saying (I drive an EV and had solar and batteries, essentially I am all for a sustainable future), but as soon as the Anti Clean Energy / EV brigade start their rant it's usually something along the lines of "Oh you're one of those tree huggers trying to save the planet" which is totally wrong. Keep up the good work, I learnt so much from you and this made me in a better position to know what I needed for my own home. 👍

What is the life cycle pollution of solar panels? there is often too much attention paid to the point of use emissions that are never truly reflective of the pollution footprint.

@@GaryDoesSolar I've never seen the answer either but the inferences are that there is more pollution than expected. the one that is of major concern is the pollution in the inception and production of EVs that many have discovered that it exceeds the equivalent ICE engined cars.

Why are home batteries so expensive in the UK per kwh? My tesla cost 40k, it has an 80kwh battery- 500€ per kwh plus the car. Home battery is about 700€ per kWh plus a metal box. However in China you can get 20 kwh systems for about £ 5000.

The technology is still relative new (wrt latest chemistries) but... prices are coming down all the time, and the more people who get into EVs and home batteries, the faster prices will fall...

I wouldn't consider heating water to be a reason. Nobody should be using solar diverters now that there are tariffs like Octopus Flux.

I agree, Scott - I made a video last year to support that view, provided export rates are high: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6zc1g1bz0eA.html But... (i) In many countries, export is not allowed or welcome. For example, Australia pays a very low amount for solar export because they have so much of it. (ii) those with Air-to-Air heat pumps might like this a solution to heat their water. There are likely other scenarios where solar diverters have a role to play.

A year ago I approached six different local estate agents in West Yorkshire. ALL said the £ spent on solar, batteries or ASHP will not add anything to the asking price! Apparently location, local schools, parking, bus stops and neighbours ‘trump’ everything. Apparently nobody looks at the mandatory EPC!

Here is a fact.......... It is anticipated that between 2013 and 2034, £13.5 billion will have been spent on the smart meter rollout. We know from HS2 what this really means. Many early version smart meters have already been replaced or didn't work correctly. If all billions spent on smart meters had been spent on solar and batteries, for homes and businesses, we would have been generating and storing much more renewable energy, and further helping the grid, and its demand peaks. Smart meters generate no additional electricity, and we knew very well demand would only increase with thr electrification of transport and heating. Therefore, there is only one conclusion....... smart meters are an energy market scam for consumers, and anyone pushing them is fraudulent.

Hi Tony, I agree the cost of the smart meter rollout programme is eye-watering. But I do believe smart meters are an integral part of a renewable energy infrastructure for any country. In my view, the problem is large-scale project cost management, not the technology itself.

I hear you, and this is the situation for many, many people today. All I can say is that those that are able to buy solar today are helping technology prices come down over time, so that more and more people can join the 'revolution'. In the meantime, have you considered signing up for tariffs like gas and/or electricity tracker with Octopus? Or even Agile, if you're prepared to avoid drawing from the grid between 4-7pm? You can save perhaps are much as 20-30% that way - monies you could accumulate for an eventual solar solution...

@@GaryDoesSolar At home now all day feel the cold now I’m older = looks like the revolution has forgotten about people like me that paid taxes for 50 years only to be brushed to the side to make way for people who can afford these new forms of keeping warm for less money , I now know how my parents felt god rest their souls ,

@@kavanobrien6547 Sorry to hear about your situation, and I know of a few people who feel the same. I strongly recommend you look at the gas and electricity "tracker" tariffs provided by Octopus Energy. And if you're also able to avoid using much energy between 4-7pm then the Octopus Agile tariff could save you a lot of money.

@@kavanobrien6547 Yes, they are a supplier like EDF, but in my view better. Here's a link to their website: octopus.energy And here's a report that Which? Magazine this week that rated all the UK providers. Gary, Octopus energy do not operate in the UK, they operate in GB. N. Ireland is a separate energy market, regulated differently to GB. While I love your videos it's annoying that you don't understand the structure of your own country's energy markets.

I already did, based on your videos. When I contacted them the informed me that they don't operate in N.Ireland. I'm not trying to be over critical, your advice is excellent. It's just that that advice actually does not apply to the nearly 2 million people over here, and saying GB rather than UK upfront would make things clear for everyone. That link suggests Octopus aren't sure about their own area of operation !

@@ctid107 You'll see in the link I pasted the link that Octopus constantly to "UK" which is why I cited the same expression in my videos - I didn't know that Octopus doesn't currently operate in Northern Ireland, so thanks for pointing that out. Hopefully one day soon they'll start operating there 👍 Thanks also for your kind words about my videos.
