Sea turtles are one of the most interesting and beautiful marine creatures on the planet. Sea turtle species come in many shapes, sizes, and colors, and have many fantastic, and unique characteristics. They can migrate thousands of miles, dive to extreme depths, and live amazingly long lifespans.
Please enjoy these 10 awe-inspiring facts about these graceful, entrancing, and endangered creatures.
1. There are seven species of sea turtle
Marine biologists believe that Sea turtles first emerged more than 100 million years ago - and lived alongside dinosaurs. Modern science recognizes seven distinct species of sea turtle
They are: Hawksbill, Loggerhead, Leatherback, Olive ridley, Kemp's ridley, Green, and Flatback.
All of the species, besides the flatback are currently threatened with extinction, and there's simply not enough information on the flatback sea turtle to know how at risk they are.
2. Green sea turtles are green because of their diet.
Green sea turtles have a diet that differs from other sea turtles. Green sea turtles are herbivores, eating mostly seagrasses and algae. This diet is what gives their cartilage and fat a greenish color (not their shells), which is where their name comes from.
3. Sea turtles spend almost all of their life in the ocean, but venture on to beaches to lay their eggs.
When Sea turtles lay their eggs, they first dig a nest in the sand with their rear flippers. Each group of eggs is called a clutch. They usually lay 100-125 eggs per nest and will nest multiple times, about two weeks apart, over several months. As soon as the eggs hatch (roughly 2 months later), the hatchlings dig out of their nest. This process generally takes a few days. Once they emerge, the tiny turtles hurry to the sea and make their way offshore into the open ocean.
Once in the water, Baby Sea turtles face many threats. They are a favorite food of seabirds and fish. Few survive to adulthood, with estimates ranging from one in 1,000 to one in 10,000. but those that survive to become adults are decades old.
4. Sea Turtles Can Live As Long As Humans
Baby sea turtles have a hard time making it to adulthood, but once they do, they can look forward to a very long life. Determining an actual age for any sea turtle is difficult, but we know for a fact that they live a long time. The oldest known living sea turtle is thought to have been 83 years old when it was found back in 2016.
One deceased specimen was thought to be over 100 years old when it washed ashore in the united kingdom, and some have claimed a sea turtle in a chinese aquarium lived to over 400 years old. However, this story has yet to be confirmed.
Sea turtle lifespan vary by species, with Flatback and Loggerhead turtles often living to 70-80 years old. Olive Ridleys and Hawksbills can live to 60 years old. Leatherbacks are thought to have the shortest lifespans at around 50 years old, but it's hard to know for sure.
Regardless of how hard it may be to know the age of sea turtles for sure, they definitely have an extrordinary lifespan. Just another remarkable attribute of these remarkable creatures.
5.) Leatherbacks are the biggest sea turtles and dive the deepest.
Olive Ridleys are the smallest sea turtles. They grow up to 28 inches long and can weight up to 110 lbs. Kemp's ridleys are abou the same size.
Green Sea Trtles can weigh up to 870 lbs, or 395 kilos.
Flatbacks get up to about 100 kilos, the same as hawks bills, while logger heads can be about double at 200 kilos.
The leatherback is massive in comparison to other species. it can weight up to 2,000 pounds or 900 kilos and measuring from 6-9 feet or 2-3 meters long. Its shell (carapace) is strong and flexible, like leather - thus the name....
