If a player decides that their character would not get involved in the plot and thus play the game I am like "Sure, your character doesn't get involved. Now we are going to play this adventure, so why dont you play a backup character who has exactly the same stats and name, but actually wants to play the game?"

I ran a super old wizard once, he basically spent his entire life cooped up in a grand library studing magical concepts, but has 0 practical skills. But that knowledge showed through because his subclass was the UA lore mastery. Which lets you change the damage types of your spells, and even the type of saving throw. You basically are making your own modified spells

I like the idea that he's got the knowledge, but still doesn't know how to apply it practically until he's learned more in the field

The troll one. A DM friend of mine had the perfect fix for this. We all at the table had played a good bit. We knew what a troll was either from hearing about them or being DM's, so when we saw a troll we instantly went for fire. But it had no effect what so ever. We were all confused and frantically rolling knowledges to find out what kind of mutation this was. Killed the thing 8 times before I finally cast detect magic, and located it's ring finger having an aura of magic. We looked for a ring. No ring. Felt around and it's ring finger had an odd lump. This troll had cut it's finger to bone, slipped the ring on, and let itself heal with the ring inside! The ring in question gave fire resist 30.

Came from Loot Goblin. I can say the "going against the norm" section reminded me of an idea I had, specifically the mention of Wizard. I seen Wizards "played right" once or twice, and they can completely trivialize everyone elses involvement or even the plot itself. This has lead me to being hesitant on playing Wizard, because it feels like there is a high bar to clear, and an expectation I'm going to super-optimize it. I dont want to play "wizard *right*," but I certainly don't want to do it *wrong*, if that makes sense. I consider the first Wizard I ever wrote - never played - pretty much has *zero* damage spells... rather, violence for them is a last resort, not a main perogative. (Basic idea is a Chronorhurgy wizard focused heavily on buffs and crowd/area control, rather than throwing out Fireball every round. In hindsight felt like I was building a Bard more than a Wizard.)

I've played with/had people in my games who reverse-metagame (I guess you would call it). Like they'll fight a troll and say outloud "shit if I use fire, it's metagaming" and avoid using fire like the plague. It's always funny when it happens.

I wanna get into DnD because I love roleplaying and I love story, but it's always been a tentative thing for me because I don't know who would do it in my area, and I don't know barely anything about the game and I'm afraid there'd be too much to learn.
@sentientcoffeebean

Honestly everytime i start talking about dnd theres always some random person i wouldnt expect who pops up like a meerkat to say "you play dnd too?" just try asking around and once you get like 3 more people who wanna play thats good enough. If youre really struggling sites like roll20 are great for finding people to play online. As for learning to play dnd, how to play and how to make a character are 2 separate things so try to find a premade character sheet and just focus on the rules of play for now. there are tons of online sites and youtube channels that'll teach you what you need if you dont have an experienced person in the group.
@twistedpinttavern

I agree with the reply before me, just ask around and talk about it at game stores and such and you'll hopefully find some people! Local game stores sometimes have Facebook "looking for group" pages that you can post in as well. I'm currently in a campaign where I'm playing a moon druid, but I literally use my wild shape as a last resort and my primary mode of dealing damage is elven accuracy and dual wielding scimitars because our DM uses flanking rules. Long story short, I'm playing a Eilistraeen Drow moon druid and I don't really have to worry about sunlight sensitivity because it's Curse of Straud, but I actively work with my DM to work out how to limit super strong spells, like summon woodland creatures we worked out that it maxes out as 1 pixie to prevent a full party of flying Tyrannosaurus. The whole party is having a lot of fun with role play because all of us have very different religious beliefs in game and it's probably my favorite d&d group.

My wizard helped a pit fiend get out of a magic circle as a kid (With it's instructions, broke into a dark wizard's hideout and luckily they were careless enough to not have it trapped, low wisdom wizards amirite)... It then went onto a rampage killed a ton of people and just spared her. Because it's a pit fiend and it doesn't give a shit it will fulfill it's promises but won't go out of it's way to help, and she was a dumb child she didn't even get much out of the deal. She settled for being promised a friend because she was lonely. So it just gave her an imp that turned into a familiar appropriate for the regular find familiar spell (Usually a raven she calls whisper). Because it's a pit fiend and it won't become her friend itself, but it will gladly sent a servant to humiliate itself like that. That's how I handled the big backstory thing. Something big, but that a commoner could have a done, and that doesn't give me a huge advantage ingame.

“The DM failed to kill us again” is not necessarily a problem outlook. They should just change the word “DM” to “the bad guys”. My long-running group knows that I hardly pull punches so when they make it through a situation that was clearly intended to kill them they really feel they earned the win. They say “dang, you weren’t ready for this party DM!”
@twistedpinttavern
@twistedpinttavern 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, it's all about perspective. The bad guys are definitely trying to kill you, so being happy with the fact that they didn't pull it off is fine, but specifically blaming the DM for everything is where problems come up.
@nabra97
@nabra97 11 месяцев назад
6:07 I mean, if you don't go with polearm build, I would argue that dex is better for the paladin) Like, yes, I could have 20 AC instead of 18, but an ability to sneak ahead is already better, and I don't even touch elven accuracy. I can understand somebody being upset with other player making a borderline unplayable character thought... I haven't faced it personally, but I see how it may take away some fun from both players and the DM. 11:40 I remember one old article that accused everyone who would play a non-human character of being either pretentious or mentally ill, because apparently it's impossible to properly roleplay a non-human. Perhaps it's something along this line 🤔 13:18 It reminds me of how we fought a hydra once. I would hit it with fire every single time (because my default attack delete fire damage), but it didn't stop it from regeneration. Initially, I didn't even know it was a hydra. Than I thought that it was a homebrew modification (perhaps it needs frost or thunder or so). Eventually it turned out that DM for some reason thought that the Green flame sword delt slashing damage; I agree that arguing on this topic is never OK, but perhaps just politely asking about it may be fine
@twistedpinttavern
@twistedpinttavern 11 месяцев назад
On the hydra one, that's just an unfortunate scenario, and absolutely there's a difference between double checking on something a and being problematic about it!
@VestedUTuber
@VestedUTuber 11 месяцев назад
Ok, a DEX Paladin is fine, a Wizard who picks and chooses utility spells instead of just loading up on burst damage all the time is fine. An STR Rogue on the other hand... well, usually you do that if you intend on multiclassing into a strength-based martial class, if you're just going straight rogue with an STR build, well, I'm not saying you can't do that but you're actively gimping yourself since Sneak Attack requires finesse weapons. You'd really only go STR pure rogue for a fluffy character, not a crunchy one. As for non-EB warlock, Hexblades generally don't use EB and "Pokemon Trainer" Pact of the Chain Warlocks outright can't make use of it with their build. There's a bunch of other stuff you can do with a Warlock as well without going with a specific "archetype" build, it's just that non-EB spam "generic" Warlocks often get screwed over by DMs who are too generous with long rests. My AL character is a manipulation-focused Kobold Feylock.

@twistedpinttavern
@twistedpinttavern 11 месяцев назад
If you're going for damage output, then yeah, optimized/minmaxed builds will always win out. Even if you're not doing hardly anything in combat, as long as you're having fun, that's the part that matters
@AtelierGod
@AtelierGod 11 месяцев назад
@@twistedpinttavern hard to call it optimized or min maxed when they also could pick up PAM and a subclass to further raise the damage or survivability.
@AtelierGod
@AtelierGod 11 месяцев назад
A dex paladin is definitely possible but it further stretches out your ability scores so it might just be smarter to play the revised ranger as they’re pretty close to being a dex paladin or at least the dex counterpart to paladin. Str rogues are often not recommended due to the nature of sneak attack only working on finesse weapon which can use dex inherently or ranged weapon that only uses dex if MAD builds are considered bad then turning a SAD build into one intentionally would also be seen as bad. And wizards can take whatever spells they want, if I wanted some specific spells I would just play my own spell caster.
@twistedpinttavern
@twistedpinttavern 11 месяцев назад
That's true, a good ranger can be considered a dex paladin. And strength rogues aren't optimized, sure, but can be fun for RP purposes!
@dirtywhitellama
@dirtywhitellama 11 месяцев назад
Sure, but reactions like this are part of the problem. A person doesn't have to play the most effective build, they can play whatever they want and just roll with it, even if it's not remotely optimized. And someone coming in and telling them to do it different is patronizing and disheartening.

You should never punish your players for being more diligent and learning the game on their own time. In fact that should be encouraged. Knowing monster stat blocks is a great way to figure out how to defeat them, the problem is metagaming. People need to learn how to separate themselves from their character.
@ChaosTicket
@ChaosTicket 10 месяцев назад
This video starts out hard into the "Story first, Danger second" *Sigh*, Okay to all GMs, why dont you actually reward players for Good actions and punish Bad actions? Every story about a GM sounds like a Bad Boss Story. "You expect to be paid?!" Things tend to reach a boiling point when something like an Old School Roleplayer gets upset and quits, or the GM gets angry that one or more Players arent liking their story so they quit. People are hurt, bridges are burned, etc. As a GM its your job to explain if youre not going to play in dungeons, be serious about combat, etc. TELL people youe focused on story or a long campaign instead of quick games with combat. The Themantic things is good for stories, but it actually brings down the party when say the Trapsmith is bad as finding and disarming traps. On the opposite side when you have soft- games using PCs with Plot Armor that will confuse people looking for dangerous situations like Lord of the Rings or Indiana Jones. So take this list and flip it around. #1 "We need to powerful equipment and allies to guarantee will kill these monsters and succeed at saving people/places/the world". While having a superpowerful "Punch of Kill Everything as level 1 is not really fair, finding things to succeed is one of the most basic motivations imaginable. Its like a GM saying "I ban shovels" to people about to start digging. #2 Pay your characters #3 The Dungeon Master is supposed to be Roleplaying the Bad Guys. #4 (Advantage is a 5e thing) Characters are motivated to achieve the best results so they can actually perform #1 #5 Don't be dead weight on your team. #6 Yes Session 0 is important #7 This needs further context) #8 See #3. A good Dungeon Master has to know when to be the Bad Guy and when to be a Good Person outside of games. #9 (This needs further context) #10 Metagaming in stories should be kept to a minimum, but learning X monster has a weakness to something should be learned. No "I forgot to use Bludgeoning weapons against skeletons, *derp*". Don't look up stat blocks while fighting. I hate when a GM just gives enemies randomized abilities but no actual indications. I remember a story "Am I Smart Enough To Know What An Elf is?" also known as "Anon doesn't know what a goblin is" about Alien Covenant style Goblins that reproduced by spores and burst out of people. Its very memorable to me, but its also hard to find now. The GM in the story just keeps changing things to say the Player Characters are "Too Stupid" to know about the chestbursting, that no skill check will let you know this, that the Goblins are technically *not Goblins* so some like a Ranger's Favored Enemy class feature doesnt work, etc. Eventually one player then asks "Do I know what an Elf is?" and finally the GM says "yes, you know what an Elf is". Other players start joining in on the fun and asking annoying questions like "Do I know what a table is?"
