All The Light We Cannot See is such a beautifully written book. You can read it just for the prose itself. It has a magical feel to it.

I highly, highly, highly recommend Shogun. My father was stationed in Japan for a year during the Korean War. He fell in love with Japanese culture. He read it when it came out in the 70s and loved it. He was a voracious reader. I picked up books from him after he finished them, so I read it in the 70s, too. And perhaps twice since then. Absolutely love the book. One of the best I’ve ever read - a modern classic….

@@TristanTalksBooks Thanks, Tristan. Just telling it like I see it. I’ve read Wolf Hall. It is good but is the first in a three book series, so the whole story isn’t told in this one. I enjoyed it, but as someone else said, it is a bit of a slog. Several of the other books you mentioned sound interesting. I’ve purchase Winter in Madrid on Audible based on your video.

I read Shogun in 1983 and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was fascinating to learn some Japanese language along the way. Coincidentally, while reading it I met up with some Japanese girls and was able to try out some Japanese, which both impressed and caused much hilarity. Happy days! A vote for Shogun.

I vote for All the Light We Cannot See, because I'm dying to hear your thoughts on how it's written, whether or not you think it's destined to be a classic, and if you think it worthy of the Pulitzer. I read it recently, & the opinions are all over the place & fascinating! Couldn't more highly recommend Wolf Hall. It's one of the few modern books that felt like a classic to me. It's just a masterpiece. The Kite Runner has staying power like few books I've read, and still haunts me! (I love these videos. My TBR keeps getting longer! :) Thank you!

I read only 2 of these books, Shogun and All the Light You Cannot See, I liked Shogun more, but it is written to be exoctic on purpose, probably a more realistic take from that period would be Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa

I highly, highly recommend Shogun. A period piece, that I envision is accurate. It is non-European and you learn the culture of Japan, much of which extends into current time periods. Perhaps not as literary as many others, it shines in other ways. (Do not watch the older TV mini-series - it fails to capture the brilliance of the novel itself). As a voracious reader myself, this ranks in my top 5%. You can't go wrong with The Kite Runner, either. If you have never read any books about WWII or Nazi Germany, maybe this book is brilliant, but I found All the Light We Cannot See was nothing special. It was not bad, but certainly not worth all the hype. Just average. My opinion only.
@Noa-cc9ur

I'd recommend either "Kite Runner" or "All the Light We Cannot See". The Kite Runner - qualifies as a modern classic in my opinion. i read it years ago when i was in high school. the story itself is not easy but it is well written and important. back then I remember thinking i've never read anything like this before. All the Light We Cannot See - as a jewish woman who has been exposed to many stories and testimonies about the holocaust I have to admit that at some point all the fictional stories starts to sound the same and as I have access to testimonies I usually prefer them, however it was still very well written and to someone whe's not jewish might be even more intriguing. Anyway, whatever book you choose i hope you'll enjoy it.

Hard choice. I’ve read all the Hilary Mantel and Wolf Hall, specifically, more than once. Would love for you to have the experience and to hear your take. I read Shogun as a kid in middle school and will pick up the audiobook, as you’ve reminded me how much I enjoyed it. I think, tho, that my preference for your review would be ‘Golden Hill.’ Maybe because of the New York setting?
@wouterdemuyt1013

Three I haven't read, so I'll pick one of those. Golden Hill: never even heard of it. All The Light We Cannot See: I've had it for ages, but I've been afraid to read it. I truly loved About Grace by Doerr when it came out, but I heard this one was going for effect too much. And I was a bit disappointed by his latest book. Restauration: Heard it's very good. And Rose Tremain never disappoints. I'll pick Doerr. I want to hear your take on it.

Excellent video. You made all of them sound like must reads and it is hard to choose BUT Shogun, Shogun, Shogun. I read it years ago when it came out and have reread it (not something I do often). I would love to read it again all these years later and see if it arouses the same feelings in me. I went on to read all sorts of books about Japan and by Japanese writers and love haiku poetry. I think Shogun and Wolf Hall are worth comparing because essentially so much of these books is about the influence of characters, individuals on politics. Both are stuffed with political intrigue. I don’t care how many people say the Doerr book is wonderful….I am totally resistant….but not sure why. Loved The Kite Runner. You made the Tremain book sound worth persevering with. So, for me, No 1 Shogun, just to see if I still love it, and for you to compare with the series. Going to watch that but when you love a book, well, it will be with trepidation….🥴

All the light we cannot see is beautifully written and it stayed with me. Wolf Hall was also fantastic. I have to continue the series. Khalid Hosseni’s “A Thousand Splendid Suns” was one I had to put down for a bit before continuing because my eyes kept doing this weird watering thing 😭😭😭 but the story was amazing. What a list -- what a tough choice to vote for just one. So many of these I own and are waiting to be read -- some have been waiting for years. I think I am going for Restoration -- the only Rose Tremain I have read is The Gustav Sonata -- which I really enjoyed. Of course Wolf Hall is excellent. But my second choice would actually be Shogun, I need to get that read. I have started it twice -- but it has been the wrong time to push through such a long read - even though I was finding it so interesting. If that one ends up winning I will take it as a sign to pick it up again.

I loved Cloud Cuckoo Land, then moved on to his memoir of a year in Rome, and now I'm reading About Grace. I read Shogun a few years ago and thought it was wonderful. I loved Wolf Hall, and the rest of that trilogy - also fabulous. I read The Glass Palace when it came out and was kind of iffy about it, although what you say is true - there's a lot of stuff about colonialism and the crush of the 20th century on this repressed country. Rose Tremaine is now on my big list as I'm a big fan of Hilary Mantel, and now there will be no more from her.

I haven’t read any of these books, but I’m adding these three to my TBR, so I’d be happy to hear your opinion of one of them. They are: - Shogun - The Good Doctor - The Glass Palace

Kite Runner and All the Light We Cannot are the only two I've read from this selection and both were excellent. You can't go wrong with e either is this. Now I need to read Shogun!

My vote is for Shogun, I just kept thinking about it while watching the video. :) I might attempt to read it myself.

I’ve read All the Light We Cannot See and Wolf Hall. Both are excellent. I’ve been toying with picking up Shogun, but it’s not readily available. A lot of hype for it on RU-vid has pushed up the demand, apparently, and it’s not in local bookstores, and is very expensive used.
