Video Information: Submarines float on the surface by using ballast tanks full of air. There are valves at the top of the ballast tanks that are opened when it's time for the submarine to submerge. So how deep can military submarines go? Today we’ll present you guys the top 10 deepest diving operational submarines in the world. This list is based on test depth which is the maximum depth at which a submarine is permitted to operate under normal peacetime circumstances. Enjoy watching the video. Cheers!

I was a Sonar Tech aboard the USS Henry M. Jackson SSBN 730...A Trident submarine...This popped up recommended by RU-vid. I only began watching because, as many others have commented, the Test and Crush depths of at least a U.S. Navy submarine are classified. Granted, of the 3 levels of classified material, Confidential, Secret and Top Secret, test depth of a boat is merely Confidential, and is not difficult to discern. But for a RU-vid poster to claim to have such knowledge as this for 10 different military submarines is ludicrous.
@EricThompson1965

Not to mention that since I know exactly what the Test and Crush depths of a Trident submarine are, that the Ohio class is not mentioned in this list, as it would be by the depths indicated by the poster of the video, merely proves just how inaccurate it is

The published data of ships are the manufactures for cruising operation. Actual capability in speed and depth in fighting mode is at the maximum of +/- specifications and the nerve of the captain. Those specs are always somewhat unknown. Add 10% for temporary extreme performance is the usual assumption.

Keep in mind that "test depth" is deceiving. The builders design them to withstand a certain pressure for a set amount of time, yet many Kriegsmarine Uboat captains in the Atlantic reported exceeding even the estimated crush depth of their submarines on several occasions without the pressure hulls failing while evading depth charges from overhead destroyers. The true combat diving capabilities of all military subs in service is absolutely classified. Who in their right mind would develop something that is supposed to be a step ahead of their rivals and then make that information public? Nobody.
@xmeda
@xmeda 3 года назад
Many Kriegsmarine captains also were crushed by the deep waters, so they had no chance to report anything. It always depends on condition of the hull. Sometimes it survived few deep dives and then it failed surprisingly during next attempt.
@taraswertelecki3786
@taraswertelecki3786 3 года назад
All true. Test depth is merely the maximum depth a submarine can operate safely ALL THE TIME, assuming the pressure hull, hull valves and anything else that communicates with the surrounding water was not damaged in some way. A submarine can go much deeper than it's rated test depth, but skippers for obvious reasons do not do that lightly. In combat though they take risks that they would not take in peacetime, even though submarines in general always operate on a war footing. One only see photos of the mangled wreckage of the U.S.S Thresher and Scorpion to see the fate that awaits any submarine that falls below collapse depth. U-boats during WW-2 were built to operate to about 500 feet, but descended to 1,000 feet to evade co-ordinated depth charge attacks from a hunter-killer group above. A depth charge exploding near the hull was always fatal.

Nope... The Test and Crush depths of a Trident are only Confidential... The lowest of the 3 levels of Naval security classifications. Because those depths are not very difficult to discern if you have actually built your own submarines. Russia has built many subs. They are fully aware of the approximate realistic depths to which military submarines are capable... Because they have built their own... The ocean is the constant. Technology and metallurgy can only do so much against the pressure of the oceans. Regardless of nationality.... Take it from an old boomer squid. Those depths are NOT the hilarious 5000 or 10,000 meters these fools on here are claiming... So while the limits ARE classified, they are not highly classified

Every boat is as good as it's welds, and every boat, same class or not, has a unique crush depth. It isn't unusual for a submarine to be capable of twice it's "test depth" Our boats back on the 30s and 40s would, in a pinch, go well beyond their rated depths.

I’ve a BS in Chemistry 🧪. Knowing how hard Titanium is to work with - I’m impressed The Russkies were able to build an entire sub from the Element. It also has the advantage of being non-magnetic - making MAD detection almost impossible. The Akula Class also used a Liquid Sodium Cooled Reactor. This is great for achieving a compact reactor. However - Sodium reacts vigorously with water - even more so in a molten state. You’re trying to keep absolutely all water out - when you’re totally surrounded by it. The US has a hard time working with Titanium. When building The SR-71 - it was found even the trace amount of cadmium left behind by cadmium plated wrenches would cause bolts to fail. Tracing lines with Pentel Markers would leave behind trace amounts of ink - that sometimes had components that could cause welds to fail. Welds washed off with water during the summer tended to fail more often than those in winter - which had to do with amount of Chlorine in the water. So they switched to distilled water to rinse off parts.

Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. And terrorists (puppets of the Antichrist) who misinterpret verses, out of ignorance and political motivations, and take them out of historical context (just like radical atheists do by the way), don't help either. Thank you very much for your time. Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them). Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).. Salam (Peace) -----------

Yes, crush depth. Test depth is the maximum safe tested depth. Exact crush depth is a bit of an unknown. It's predicted based on calculations, but it's impossible to prove without, ya know, CRUSHING IT. And at close to crush depth, even small condition changes could result in the sub sustaining damage or crushing. Crush depth is usually another 30-50% deeper than test depth. In war, a sub commander could decide to go deeper than test depth to get away from hostiles, at increased risk of damage or crush.

Maximum test, and crush depths are always classified. They may not even be revealed to the captains, or XOs as a matter of protocol. All classified operating documentation will probably only identify operating parameters that can be fully guaranteed by the builder. Given engineering safety factors, the ultimate limits may only be known by very few engineers, scientists, and senior naval staff. The most probable points of rupture would likely be at welded joints, hatch interfaces, and anywhere external objects need to penetrate the pressure hull; such as periscopes, and power transmission shafts.
@antioch4019
@antioch4019 2 года назад
Well the Captain and XO must have a number to go on to not exceed that number. If that is the maximum crush/test depth or not or a decided max depth is irrelevant as that number is the maximum depth the sub can operate in anyway. So that number that the captain gets is the maximum depth of the sub even if the sub itself would be able to handle more.

The Oscar and Sierra class subs when the USSR designed and built them in the Cold War they knew that they only way to survive was: speed and depth. They were so noisy you could hear them at miles away even if they were running silent and our boats were at flank lol. They didn’t improve much in class 2 either. Unfortunately they found out the hard way the 688I were just as fast and could dive almost as deep but much quieter. Many minor collisions occurred because of close encounters with the Russian boats and boomers by accident. Simply because the Russian Captains didn’t know the American boats were there. Unfortunate risks but things that never made the news and truth is none of those skippers wanted to start WW3 it was more about the job and egos lol.

French army is clear : real dive capacity are never communicated. When you heard our officers they allways say the average known depth of all the concurrence and the typical ( and official) phrase is " we dive at least to 400" ( probably much more) So this kind of vid is totally irrelevant.
