this is sort of embarrassing to say but when I was in school they never really drilled in the basics for us, they only did for a semester and we basically moved on onto something else. For me I really wanted to get basic skills down and have a good understanding of it but I never knew whereabouts to look for such things, so thank you for sharing really good info!
There is no time for so many exercises but they do explain everything and then you apply it in more advanced projects. There are many aspects to take into consideration. I think it's difficult to exercise each one within so little time.
Yesss, gatekeeping of design is so so classist!! I hate it that people think that design has to be super exclussive and not accessible in order for it to be respected. Not only it creates a totally hostile enviroment, it keeps us from moving forward. Sharing knowledge, information, process and being able to talk about the nature of the market (so that we can SHAPE IT and not let it shape US) is so important. If you are a good designer you are a good designer, no matter what fancy, expensive school you did or didn't go to.
@@julies9527 did you order the one she showed in the video or the one with the blue cover? I’m not sure what the difference is since it’s the same book
@@madgrpx9237 I’m not sure of the difference either. I went on to Amazon to find the one with the cover that she had and then found the same book cheaper on eBay. I’m really happy with it which one did u get?
@@julies9527 I’m gonna need this for my design class, and it doesn’t say which edition! Personally the white cover looks better but I really don’t know since it’s the older one!
@@madgrpx9237 just looked inside the cover. It is 2008 so this is probs the older one. What design course are you taking? I’d love to do a proper course one day. I have my own business in a different field but have been doing loads of Skillshare courses...and I’ve used my Ai skills for doing graphics in my work. You’ve chosen a great industry to go into...I’m sure what you are learning will never be wasted!
your mini rant got me HEATED bc youre so right! im tired of people acting like formal education is the only way. work hard, have a kickass portfolio to show for and really just broaden your horizons! i love your page. im currently waiting to start school (i decided my major after the semester started) and ive just been trying to understand the basics and get used to adobe to get a head start and your channel has been a life saver
I agree with your statement about how design and information should be accessible for everyone. I did not go into school for design but that doesn’t mean I, or anyone else, can’t learn about. People change their minds all the time from curiosity or boredom. Nothing wrong with looking for new resources! I just discovered your channel and I can’t wait to watch more videos from you! Learned a lot of new and interesting concepts :)
Absolutely I would like to see more videos highlighting informative books. I also love rebranding and tutorials as they help me develop my skills and push my creative vision. 😍😍
This just popped up in my recommended and I am so happy about it. I've been a graphic designer professionally since 2010 and I have a real love-hate relationship with it. I've had countless days of just thinking of doing something different but I know I won't be happy doing something else. Love your energy and think this is an ideal channel for days I feel like that. Just a place to recharge that feeling. And I am so gonna get that book!
SO GOOD!!! The hierarchy one is SUCH a good exercise. I get stuck in box ALL THE TIME when making ads look interesting with lots of copy on them. THANK YOU!! :)
Hi! I'm a graphic design mexican student and I just discovered your channel 'cause I was looking for info about editorial design and watched your video and then watched another one and another one and... your channel and your videos are I was looking for since months.
Thank you so much for the video. I love your positivity. I've just started in design. So I'm trying to absorb as much information about it as possible :)
I know this video has been around for a little while, but don't listen to people who hate on you for saying anyone can be a designer. Keep doing what you're doing and sharing information. My sister learned graphic design by just doing it because back when she started youtube wasn't even a thing. She's been designing for over 20 years and is amazing at it. You can be amazing at anything so long as you put your mind to it. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge so much and it's been extremely helpful in adding to my skills as I'm sure it is for others like me. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I love this video and the mindset behind taking down barriers when it comes to design. I did a program that was essentially a 2 year diploma fast-tracked into 5 months. I really liked it and I feel that it was the right choice for me, but it was still about as expensive as a standard two year diploma and so that’s definitely not accessible to a lot of people. We loose nothing from sharing our knowledge and resources from ppl who can’t afford post secondary
So grateful I found this video. It's a helpful tool. Your positive attitude brings interest and excitement to the the Art. I'm excited there's a book for graphic design too.
😭😭i just love how positive you are and when you talk about graphic design it is a soothing voice you give... i honestly am a visual artist..practiced alot on pinterest.. was so passionate about it.. i even had my career changed until my parents never approved.. i slowly started to loose hope and interest.. and felt limited.. i wanted creativity, something that got my adrenaline 🚀 i had hunger but after 2019/2020 my passion died.. i rarely touch my drawing book...but i know i have friends in this field one of them was teaching me the shapes and how to balance them..i felt it was difficult because i was scared.. now i want to go back and do it again and revive my talents
This was awesome, thank you ^_^ I'm a self taught traditional artist transitioning into digital (I draw characters now with backgrounds) and I have had 3 people in 1 week tell me that I should go into graphic design -_- So I thought that I would look into graphic design ^_^ I really liked your video and I agree that Art and Design is available to anyone willing to put in the effort to strengthen their skills ^_^ The basics are the fundamentals for Everything. From architecture, to martial arts, to painting, to photography, to dancing, to cooking, to music, to drawing, ect. You never escape the Basics because they are the Foundation for whatever craft, sport, job, and so on you decide to do. If you don't learn the basics for martial arts, you can get hurt. If you don't learn the basics in art, it can look wonky and off. If you don't learn the basics of cooking, you can get sick or have burnt food. If you don't learn the basics of swimming, you'll drown. Thank you for helping those of us who either don't do well in a school type setting or who don't have the resources to go to school. Thank you for sharing your love and passion of graphic design ^_^ Excitement is the light that gets one's attention. Passion is the warmth that for which one will stay. . . . And that concludes my 4am tangent ^^;
I am here so I can refresh myself and try to get new ideas and how to explore my art style since I have been on creative block for awhile now. This helps! Thanks
Good luck! This is really not easy to achieve. I have tired too, but I felt a little lost. Now I was admitted at school and the difference is huge. If you get the chance, go to school, it's a whole different thing. I have improved dramatically and my first year isn't over yet.
@@momonatu4998 It's overwhelming indeed. I've been following skillshare lessons and youtube tutorials for the past months and the few projects I finished may be seen as amateur work (because that's kinda what it is) but I'm proud of them nonetheless because I'm doing them all on my own. Once the pandemic situation gets better I will attend some kind of course on graphic design, sadly going to school is not an option for me financially. Good luck to you as well! :)
Thank you! It's quite hard, because it's a lot, really a lot of work (we have to deliver projects every week), you end up exhausted but if you love it, it's satisfying. I have also improved a lot in drawing (we have art class), because I haven't been drawing for a long time since I was busy with else before. And we have a lot of illustration too, which is great. There is nothing about my course which I don't like. I find everything really interesting and fun and feel lucky to have found my path. So I am very happy I decided to study this, though I am a bit older now (I used to work in another field before this :) but I believe that people are not made for doing all the same thing till they die, because we all change in life, though I have always had a talent and passion for art), which actually is an advantage, because I have realized I have more life experience than other students now and this helps me to understand better many different concepts and learn faster. Really worth it if you start late. So just keep working hard on your dream no matter the age, what others say etc.!
Thank you for sharing! I started out as a self taught graphic designer more than 10 years ago and it was a struggle to find guidance and resources. Of course a good art school with a conducive learning environment and access to lecturers with invaluable experiences is ideal but there are many like me who couldn't afford it. I'm thriving in print design now and also hope to pass it on in the future
Not looking to be a graphic designer myself (I wanted to have more design resources in order to mess with social media stuff), but I agree so much with your statements - anyone, if given the proper research and study material, can work their way into art and design. It shouldn't be a classist club that only allows access to those who can afford college - sometimes college doesn't teach everything either. You're doing great, and thanks so much for the recommendations! I'll be looking into more of your videos as well.
I really appreciate you sharing what you know and willing to help those who don't know where to go and where to start. It's not something that people are willing to do very often.
Thank you so much for calling out classism in design. Honestly, if I had known what design college was going to be like (a bunch of BS, definite gatekeeping), I wouldn't have done it. Anyone CAN be a designer if they work at it, just like anyone can become good at drawing if they practice a lot, a lot, a lot. It has nothing to do with "natural talent", a bachelor's or master's degree, anything like that.
Thank you so much for making this video. I really had no idea about how to improve my design skill, and "what should i do". But after watching this video, i feel confident to try these exercises, without feeling like, "I can't do that, i'm just a beginner". Thank you soo much.
this video was an amazing lesson, it has opened a lot of doors in my imagination, now i can really understand how crucial graphic design basics are. thank you so much for this video it's really helpful, your demonstration of the book was really clear and easy to understand
Also "Non-designer's design book - Robert Williams" is a very good beginner book to get started to graphic design and understand the basics and the do's and don'ts.
I think this is so helpful. Thanks for being a supportive person! And I will be buying this book, another great one to add to the collection. I admire Ellen Lupton too, already have a few of her other books and have heard her speak at various events.
Thank you so much for this! I live in Venezuela and university is almost impossible for me right now so this helps me a lot! I'm currently working as a graphic designer for social media but I still have a long way to go
thanks this was really helpful! One question I have is where do I practice these? Like on paper, on canva, on photoshop? Sorry if it's a dumb question lol.
Loved this video! I’m currently a Studying to be a graphics designer and I feel totally lost! From the way you described this book I’ll definitely be purchasing a copy to practice some of these exercises! Please share some of your other books that you find to be helpful! ❤️❤️❤️
Just came across your channel, and I love how supportive this space is! Made me watch an ad for an entire minute cus you deserve the same amount of support lmao Subscribed!
