@Nicooriia
@Nicooriia 4 года назад
I HATE when people ask for a JPEG of the job im doing for them. Sometimes, apparently, the software they need it for only accepts jpeg, or png is too heavy, so I make multiple copies in PNG, then many copies in jpeg trying to safe as much of the work's resolution as possible. I cry each time something is saved in jpeg.

Easiest fix for me is to get in the habit of lowering the opacity of the sketch layer just a tad. That way when you're doing your lineart, if your lineart looks transparent you immediately know you're on the wrong layer :)

I'm so glad this isn't like all the other "Digital art mistake" videos that are floating around. This one was actually helpful and didn't shame on a person's style of art by calling it "bad" and "unprofessional/childish." I've seen far too many videos where the creator says "ALWAYS color inside your lines. If you don't it will look like a child's drawing" but some peoples' art style is a lot like how clip art in Microsoft Office is; lines, and vague coloring in. That doesn't make it less of an art piece than a digital painting, imo. Art is art, and everyone has a different style. This was extremely helpful, especially the part about destructive editing!

Ninten-doing! I'm a beginner too and I'm into digital art. You don't really need very expensive materials for working on digital art in a good way. So you don't need to buy the best tablet and a computer. What I use for digital art is an app which I installed in my phone called Ibis Paint X, but if you don't want that app, I suggest you Mediabang and a digital pencil ((the pencil is optional)). That's enough for doing amazing art, I hope I helped you! ^^
@blumen1126
@blumen1126 6 лет назад
P.d: if you ask for traditional art, only paper, two pencils (example: HB and 2H) and an eraser for sometimes do brights. I don't suggest to a beginner to start with markers or color pencils since colors are very difficult and in traditional you can't go back. But with the pencils, you can always erase and start again, and you don't have to get worries about colors :3

Drawing on one layer isn't that big of a deal. In fact, it might be better in some situations.
@rambo3rd471
@rambo3rd471 6 лет назад
It's quite common for artist to get caught up in many layers. The biggest problem is it can waste a lot of valuable time. I know many digital artists who work with hundreds of layers. Now if you make a couple of mistakes on a few of them, just having to search through all of those layers to find the mistakes and correct them waste a lot of time. Marc Brunet (creator of cubebrush) frequently uses only 1 layer and he doesn't have any problems doing it. It's all about your workflow and what you find best to work with.
@rambo3rd471
@rambo3rd471 6 лет назад
Plus it just simplifies your art in general. The more layers, the more complicated your project is to work with. There's nothing wrong with using multiple layers, nor is there anything wrong with using one layer. It's all about what you are doing and what works best.

@indigoxalis

Thats fine lol Most of the images on the internet are jpeg. You should save to png only if the art is large, detailed, has a transparent background, or if you plan to sell/print it. Jpegs are good though-- the quality loss and saturation issues in this video are pretty extreme. Png take up more space, so I would save any art that is cell shaded, less detailed, or that you plan to post on places like Instagram or Amino as jpeg.
@phaneserichthoneus8895
@phaneserichthoneus8895 6 лет назад
Actually, PNG works very well for low-detail art, too, such as the flowers in the end of the video or something with lots of solid colors and smooth gradients. A PNG from that kind of art would be tiny in size and much smaller than a JPEG with zero quality loss. And JPEG doesn't play nicely with solid colors, especially red. Facebook could take a lesson from this and use PNG for a lot of the artwork people upload. Not only would the art be perfectly pristine, it would take up less storage space on their drives. But Facebook doesn't seem to have learned that yet, so they're abusing their own servers and bandwidth by forcing all images to the JPEG format. Speaking of JPEG, it's too bad JPEG2000 never caught on. My old Paint Shop Pro 8.10 (released October 2003) can save as JPEG2000, and while there's still some loss to detail and quality, it's not as blocky as the JPEG format that still seems to be the most-used format on the web.

If working with the hue wheel it means that a hue slightly to the right of the original hue is warmer, and one to the left is cooler, allowing compensation for the lower half of the circle (if you don’t, then it looks like the directions reverse.)

I got the large Intuos 4 a few years ago and it's great with Photoshop for digital painting. The trickiest thing about digital art is drawing curves. In real life you spin your paper so you can work with the natural rotation of your wrist. Obviously, you can't pick up and flip your Mac monitor, but the Intuos has a rotate setting to spin the image on the screen. If I remember rightly, there is some kind of rotate screen keyboard shortcut of Photoshop but it's always much more organic to do it with a dedicated controller.

Aaron Rutten when I firstly got into digital art I saved my first drawing as JPG beacause somebody told me it's better that way, but since I'm a perfectionist I kept zooming in on the saved file and I kept seeing those blocky patterns. 'I didn't do these' I thought and I chosen PNG since then and didn't care about that person's advice anymore. I'm happy that I found, at last, some material that supports my choice, thank you!

Partly guilty on the JPG thing, because PNG doesn't work with pictures in CMYK. Luckily many printing shops just use the original psd nowadays or do their own magic on RGB-files, so there is only little loss when printing. (If it is not for printing, I use PNG of course. :) )

always save your file as krita , psd or whatever .. and export with jpg 95% quality for web , make it smaller than the resolution you painted in , if you analyse really high quality anime in still frames you can still see the brush strokes of the artists or 3d objects shining through here and there .. the becomes more evident the higher the resolution , little blur or downsampling goes a long way

A lot of people here say they still keep their tablet sideways and "can't" use it parallel to their monitor. It's a learning thing, it won't feel right at first but you just have to get used to it. "It works fine sideways" no, it doesn't. If you get used to keeping it parallel to your monitor, then try to go back to your previous ways, you'll notice why. I learnt drawing digitally, and when I first started out I always kept the tablet very tilted. But with time, I slowly started moving my monitor more and more to be closer aligned with my tablet. And every time I reset my monitor to its original position but kept the tablet where I had it, it was extremely difficult to draw even the simplest line. You can't really pinpoint where you are on the screen when your tablet is not aligned with it. Nowadays I use a Cintiq 13HD, so I draw on the tablet's monitor directly. But out of habit, I still keep it aligned with my computer's monitor. At school, we have Intuos, and the majority in my class are using a tablet for the first time and everyone's keeping their tablets unaligned with their monitor. And I see my old habits in all of them - the constant frustrating Ctrl+Z spam trying to get ONE line in the right position? The difficulty colouring within the lineart or erasing outside it without crossing to the other side? Get used to keeping your tablet and monitor parallel and you'll notice how these struggles lessens immensely. Edit: Another things to add - You can't compare a paper to a tablet, unless your tablet is a display one like mine. A paper has the drawing right where you hold your pen. A tablet doesn't - the drawing is on your screen, not where your pen is. You're supposed to write with your paper slightly tilted, this isn't a paper. And if you really can't draw on a tablet without tilting it, then move your monitor so it's still aligned with your tablet. What's important isn't whether you draw tilted or not, the point is that your tablet has to be parallel with your MONITOR, where yours EYES are. But we could also mention health issues in not sitting properly while drawing with a tilted tablet. Your back, neck and especially your arm and wrist will suffer immensly from sitting incorrectly while drawing digitally. Remember to draw with your WHOLE arm, and not just your wrist. The secret behind straight lines? Speed? Precision? A stable hand? No. Moving your entire arm.

@D2Kprime
@D2Kprime 6 лет назад
Something isn't "wrong" simply because YOU don't do it that way. I can draw with my tablet in any position. It doesn't have to be in one spot or another. Comfort-level is relative, not static. I'm right handed but I can "learn" to right with my left. Doesn't mean I'm _supposed_ to do it that way. Not only that, but the sensor-area on the tablet is mapped into the screen so regardless on what position you are holding the tablet it's going to mimic what you do on the pad. Whenever I give tips to people on anything I do I always caution them that this is how "I" choose to do it. There isn't a right or wrong way inherently. There are _do's_ and _don'ts_ in art but you have to explain *why.* For instance, if someone is aspiring to work for a major studio I would say that I RECOMMEND doing x,y,z to increase your chances for hire. If someone is look to sell their artwork at trade shows, anime and comic-cons I would say I RECOMMEND doing these things to stand out from the rest. I NEVER tell someone *not* to do something that I wouldn't. Art is an expression on that person. You might want to retool that part of your tutorial.

Also, my WACOM tablet is to the right of my laptop and partially under the lip of my laptop (I have my laptop on risers). I have no trouble aligning anything despite the 1.5 foot offset from the center of my screen. My arm is in a natural position relative to my shoulder and not squished to the center line of my torso (which would put too much strain on my shoulder and back). My elbow is bent at a natural angle and my wrist does not have to bend at an acute angle relative to the wrist. If I had my wrist centered on my tablet and my tablet was centered relative to my torso + screen, my wrist would be contantly cocked at an angle and I would very quickly strain everything. I am wondering if anyone else uses the same positioning I use?
@taimdala
@taimdala 6 лет назад
I found that mapping my active area of my tablet properly to my screen does most of the work for me in terms of cursor placement. I have my tablet set to have all four corners match the four corners of my screen. Cursor postion on screen matches 1:1 the pen position on the tablet. Hand-eye coordination does the rest of the heavy lifting and I don't need to center my torso+tablet+screen for accuracy. When drawing with analog materials (pen and paper, etc.), I can position the paper and the pen at angles natural for my body and ergonomic needs. Those angles aren't the same as the ones used for my tablet, but I have no trouble switching between the two methods. Is this normal?

I haven't any recommendations for you, alas, because I do all my work on my laptop. My current laptop has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. I don't have a separate monitor. However, I can say that when I switched from my old laptop with a 1280 by 800 pixel screen, everything I made to those measurements got TINIER on my 1920 x 1080 screen. Both laptop screens were 15" screens but obviouslly, to fit 1920 x 1080 pixels in the same amount of space as my old laptop, the resolution turned out to be finer. I'm not an expert. I just know from personal experience that the text and menus in CS4 on my old laptop was easy to read. On my new laptop with the finer resolution, the text got TINY and now I have to use reading glasses to read the same thing. It's not just my eyes getting old. I had both laptops running the program simultaneously and I slapped a physical ruler on both screens to measure the text. YUP! the same text on the newer laptop was actually smaller because the resolution was finer. If you're looking for a monitor with good resolution, I would recommend a minimum of 1280 x 800 pixels. That's what my old laptop with a 15" diagonal screen has. It's likely that new laptops today will have a much higher resolution than 1280 x 800 pixels, so if you get 15" screen on your laptop, then chances are likely your resolution will be closer to 1920 x 1080 or even higher. The sales information/laptop specs should be able to tell you what the screen resolution is. I haven't shopped for a stand-alone monitor, but I expect the screen resolution will be described in the same way as any laptop would. I hope this helps, Ashutosh Bhosale! Good luck!

Dear Mr. Rutton, Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I thought it was very cute when you were teaching us about destructive editing, and the stick man was frustrated with your use of the eraser! You didn't have to add that detail, but you did, and it made your very informative video a little friendlier. (If tormenting a stick man with amputation can be considered "friendly"... fortunately I dont formally know the stick man, so I can simply assume he was fine with it) I feel confident enough now that I can start my illustrated anthology... I just got a new laptop, I havent been able to really work in a few years. But I have all the equipment I need now (except for a flatbed scanner perhaps, because I prefer drawing on paper like I have been doing since I could hold a pencil, then putting my art into the computer and painting it there) and I have the storys in my head. Doesn't lessons under 'Mistake 2' (orange ball) & 'Mistake 3' (apple) actually contradict each other? the orange ball on the left, that "looks kind of flat", has been given the same shading effect as the apple: deeper shadows & highlights. The "more natural" orange ball on the right actually looks more flat due to a lower contrast between the shadow & highlight. But I guess it depends on the type of material you want to convey - i.e rubber vs. brass.

Some very helpful tips for beginners, but #1 is just not true and imo it's pretty unhelpful to say there's aright and wrong way to position your tablet. Every artist has different preferences and workflows. It's like saying there's a right and wrong way to use shortcuts or what kinds of tools and windows are present on your *insert fav art program* workspace. I ,who would have thought, use my tablet not only offset to the right side but also at an angle about 45 degress relative to the screen on a table that is concave. So I essentially sit in a half circle table, with my right hand resting naturally over the tablet, my left hand resting naturally over the keyboard which is offset to the left of my screen. My ellbow is my anchorpoint so I draw exact horizontal lines on the tablet and twisting my wrist easily makes perfect half-circles. My left hand controls keyboard shortcuts to undo, copy, select etc. My girlfriend on the other hand can't draw with that set up at all. She prefers sitting back in her chair with the tablet on her lap and she uses no keyboard at all, just the quick buttons on the tablet. She also never uses the back tip on the wacom pen as eraser (which I do). So everyone has preferences of their own. And I implore new artists: find what workflows you like and what makes you work most efficient and with the least amount of strain on wrist and shoulders and stick to that, not what anybody tells you is "right".
