Did a female Doctor Who REALLY turn a generation of boys into criminals? No. No it did not. For more awesome content, check out: whatculture.co... Follow us on Instagram: / whoculture Catch us on Twitter: / whoculture #DoctorWho
Have to admit I was sceptical about him when I watched him get announced (never saw thick of it at the time) was blown away at how good he was and he is my doctor now, enjoy the rest of his era it’s a blast!
THANK YOU! I so wish more people would give his era another go. Capaldi is brilliant even in the sub-par material he had in more than a few episodes. *cough* Kill The Moon *cough* The Zygon Invasion/Inversion ending speech is epic.
@@dguthrie11 raven, heave, he’ll, that whole trilogy is his culmination of his regenerations character growth and its masterfully done by Capaldi you can’t help but love 12 and then he gets to shine with Bill just so good love the 12th Era
The pathetically miniscule number of complaints that can trigger a tabloid headline will never cease to tickle me. Deep Breath: audience 9.17 million, complaints: 6. Not 6 million, not 6 thousand, not even 6 hundred, but 6.
I'm fairly sure that a programme or AD somewhere got a single complaint. Yes that right 1 complaint which then got that AD/tv programme deleted. All for what? Some overly senstive snowflake that has things on speed dial to make a complaint about anything.
@@lindildeev5721 Silence in the Library had a content warning for not letting kids watch alone at night! The Unquiet Dead is small potatoes compared to that lmao.
"Doctor impersonator turning youth into villains" is actually an awesome sounding plot for an intro story for a new Doctor. Maybe the Doctor & the Master both reincarnate into mearly identical appearances or something
I was really hoping the first female Doctor would be ginger. She regenerates, her companions are still stunned. She gets a look at herself in the mirror and starts freaking out, companion(s) try to reassure her, and it turns out she's ecstatic to be ginger and hasn't even *noticed* she's a woman yet!
I was the only male in a house filled with three generations of women so the notion that a woman can't be strong, heroic, and brilliant is as alien to me as the concept that love cares what the gender of the lovers are. Love is love is love. Nothing else matters. Also, people were scared of Dickensian ghosts but had no problem with gasmasks growing out of people's faces? I'll admit that made me a little shaken up,
I grew up with a mother, two older sisters, and a grandma; so I completely agree with you! Seeing my mother raise three kids on her own was my reality of how strong and determined women can be. My father being non-existent or terrible also showed me how weak and asswholes men can be.
The reason why the Doctor wants to be ginger is because apparently, ginger timelords are immune to mental probing or something like that. If anything, wouldn't that be "pro-ginger" considering that being a ginger timelord is basically giving them an extra superpower?
In my head-canon his earliest memories are growing up on earth (England during the industrial revolution) as a ginger girl - family went "back to Gallifrey" to get the older siblings into the Academy - during the time of their assessment something terrible happend to the place all the younger kids were staying, hurting most of them badly, even killing some... The adults were crying for a doctor to help the injured kids and that girl, on the brink of death just thought: "oh, a doctor to help us all, I could do that..." Last thoughts befor an unauthorised regeneration into a fair haired boy (with the help of a little boy, who had liked her soo much, because she used to address him as "master"). They both regenerated in that event and were put in that orphanage, because their families would not recognize them. Grew up together and stayed best friends, until "the Master" demanded "this lost life" back, he had sacrificed as a kid😅
Thanks to the reminder of the Number 1, I really hope if there is a day we get a ginger doctor, I desperately want one of their first lines to be, "I'M GINGER! I'M FINALLY GINGER!"
Personally, I prefer it when the Doctor is older. I mean, for most of the run he has been hundreds of years old, and he's now kind-of billions of years old following "Heaven Sent". Why is he getting involved romantically with teenage/early 20s women (or men)? If the Doctor actor is young it's OK, but if he's old it's not? The character is far, far older than Capaldi. 😜 Peter Capaldi was brilliant in the role. A genuine fine actor and an equally genuine Doctor Who fan.
People who submit homophobic complaints about Doctor Who are so weird to me. The entire show is about a two-hearted immortal alien with a space-time machine that looks like a police box, but two people of the same gender loving each other is where the line gets drawn? Okay...
Since homosexuality is a moral issue according to the Bible, yes it’s where the line gets drawn. Also for many, it’s just personal preference. Enjoying one weird thing and not enjoying another is not “drawing a line”
According to the bible. Jesus was at least Bisexual. He kissed more men than women in it. Would a completely straight man of that time kiss men. I think not. Jesus never mentions it. It's only in the old testament where it can be seen in the bible. If you believe in Jesus you shouldn't be homophobic. He wasn't. Besides. The Doctor has always swung both ways. Makes sense as they can be male and female 🤣
@@LeviPennington-vv2kqand there’s a difference between “personal preference” and actually complaining to ofcom about it. Doctor who’s always been pretty gay anyway, my guess is the 6 people who complained hadn’t watched the show before!
@springgreen7930 Sex and intimacy are a beautiful thing designed by God to be between a male and female of the same species. It seems reasonable to find it disgusting to see it profaned on a show intended to be watched by children
To be fair, it's not unreasonable for a younger fan to have started watching with the revival, and to not have the time to go watch the whole classic series. By the time Capaldi took over, there were already eight seasons of the revival to watch (there were enough "specials" to equal a season), that's already a pretty big investment of time! Demanding everyone watch another 26 seasons in addition before they can be considered a "true fan" is just ridiculous.
I always thought it would have been fun for Whittaker to have pulled a lock and sighed. Still not ginger. Although she could have dyed her hair at some point without anyone getting been out of shape about it.
Peter being older did cost the show some of its American fans. Speaking as an American, we can be quite ageist and dismissive of things unlike what we were expecting. All the modern actors had been young so many expected another and tuned out when it wasn't someone they could either be like, or fawn over. If America stopped watching at all, it was usually around the time of Capaldi, and it was down to him not being young. And that sucks, people missed out!
I would avoid using terms like “ageist” to describe distance for an older person in a role. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love Capaldi as the Doctor. And the first Doctor was very old after all. But a personal preference is not necessarily indicative of any bias. It’s just preference
@@ErinChappel Peter Capaldi is one of my favorite actors to have played The Doctor, sadly I feel he was let down by the writing. I was overjoyed when I heard he was going to play the role, having loved his earlier work in both Doctor Who ("The Fires of Pompeii") and Torchwood "Children of Earth".
It did? I so missed that. Probably because I'd dropped cable and couldn't watch Capaldi's Doctor until I bought the DVD release. Some of us US denizens ran into funding issues ... or connection issues as my provider forgot where I lived.
When David said “Am I ginger?” Loads bloody loved it and when Matt said “Still not ginger” a woman wrote “I have just watched the 11th hour with my son and we are both ginger and are extremely offended at Matt Smith mocking us gingers. Bring back David Tennant”. And before anyone says “No one ever said that” yes they did.
My sister really hated Peter Capaldi. I think maybe she didn’t like his writing (which is why some people didn’t like him), but I’m considering stating that she disliked how he wasn’t a younger man she couldn’t fangirl over (like David Tennant and Matt Smith) or a positive role model for woman (see Jodie Whittaker) as payback for her and my mother’s accusations that I have an irrational distaste for Whittaker. As you’ve said, Hartnell and also Jon Pertwee (who was able to hold his own as the Doctor) were also older men (Capaldi’s outfit even appeared to take inspiration from Pertwee). Billie Piper even said she thought he’d be a great Doctor and I was left thinking “Thank you Billie Piper” who supported Whittaker too. Scottish MP Nicola Sturgeon also supported the 13th Doctor being a woman. I also had no issues with any of these.
I got into Doctor Who in the early 90's when there were no Doctor's on TV, I was quickly made aware the Doctor is someone who changes their appearance and can look like anything, I was already aware of various Doctor's from William Hartnell to Peter Davidson, so it didn't strike me as odd when Capaldi was cast at all, it struck me as odd that people were complaining about an accomplished actor being cast in the role.
10: Capaldi is probably the only Doctor cuter than Tennant. 9: Gotta agree. The police aren’t automatons. The police are the powerful light of pure goodness. 8: Prime Minister’s Question Time with even one Con present is scarier. 7: Daleks might not like much, but like tasting the rainbow. There’s hope for them yet. 6: Defer to 10. 5: All’s well that ends well. 4: Wow! An episode of a TV show where someone died, and the hero did something that made him imperfect? What’s the world coming to? 3: Do they complain about Beauty and the Beast or the Princess and the Frog, or Donkey and the Dragon, or Prince Farquad and… well… Prince Farquad? 2: Dunno about young men, but Fletcher? You’re nicked! 1: No words are L’Oreal.
1.) I loved the sonic sunglasses. I wish they stuck around a bit longer. 2.) I personally think it would be awesome if they made Fourteen ginger. A missed opportunity.
As a man who was once a young man I can tell you, a female doctor would not have turned me into a criminal... drugs and general irresponsibility did that.
What’s even more interesting is that for the DVDs for The Romans and Attack of the Cybermen was given a U. What’s even more bizarre is that The Invisible Enemy and Underworld was given a 12 on there DVDs.
The trouble with Ace (and if you were a teen, even then, you knew it) was that Sophie wasn't allowed to be more authentic. And I think that created a credibility gap for parts of the audience. Those that were still watching!
The BBFC rating of Dalek always brings a giggle to me. They never seemed so worried about Cybermen, both the 5 Doctors and Attack of the Cybermen got U ratings and involved the totally violent things. Attack had a character's wrists being squeezed to a bloody mess and 5 Doctors a complete massacre of a squad of Cybermen that seems the Who equivalent of a slasher or war movie
I'm guilty of thinking Peter was too old before I watched him as the Doctor. I didn't think he'd be able to do all the running that happened in the show. I was young and stupid. I love 12 now, he's in my top 6 Doctors. I love the Sonic Sunglasses, they were so fun and different! When Jenny and Vastra kissed, I was initially disappointed because I was like "Why do they have to hide a kiss behind an excuse. Xena did that in the 90s!" and that DW episode came out in 2014. Then 2016 happened I was rudely awakened to how much homphobia is still in the world.
I have always liked Peter Capaldi, for the simple reason that he's a superb actor, in anything he appears in. When I heard that he had got the Doctor Who gig, I was tremendously happy for him, knowing what a huge fan of the show he had always been. Add to this, he's a lovely, genuine bloke - a friend of mine met him whilst walking through London once, and Mr Capaldi was more than happy to have his photo taken with my mate, and to give him an autograph.
I think it was a missed opportunity to have the first female Doctor be ginger, so the Doctor could react to her new appearance and go, "Yes, FINALLY! It's about time! GINGER!!"
Just goes to show that some people are so lacking in a real life they have to boost their sagging egos by complaining about something silly to someone who really doesn't care :-( They only one of those with which I have any sympathy is the colourised The Daleks, and not because it was colourised - you forget that after the first few minutes - but that it was edited with a hacksaw by someone wearing earplugs and a blindfold! Criminal! I'll stick to the original, thank you.
What’s funny about the whole ginger thing is when we have the side story of Brendan in the series 12 finales, he’s ginger. So technically the doctor has been ginger, but doesn’t remember
Let's see some ginger facts. The gene that brings about red hair only occurs in a very small percentage of the population. This being said, and the Doctor being as old as they are, it's actually not surprising that he's never been ginger. The fact that he wants to be is awesome, though. Get some more Scottish actors. Maybe, then, he can be one.
Your ginger fact is wrong the gene that causes ginger hair is recessive and very common it is just that it takes certain conditions for it to become active.
When Capaldi was announced i admit i had a hissy fit and angrily posted online my anger. Ironic how he would become my favourite doctor of all time. I chalk it up to me still being super young at the time and immature. I've since learnt to give people a chance
I heard this was the reaction among some, I never understood it, I already knew how accomplished an actor he was, I expected it from Matt Smith because he was less well known, but Capaldi was already popular as an actor at the time.
I read somewhere that in the future the gene that causes ginger hair will be more prevalant than the gene that causes blond hair owing to the blond gene being recessive. Which means that gingers are playing the long game and will eventually "have more fun." 😁
One has to be when Wild Blue Yonder (one of the best who eps ever) came out, and folks came out complaining that previous doctors did not appear as cameos
has it be commented upon how The Doctor's throwing ability on a platform in The Giggler was similar to that in The Christmas Invasion, DT's first episode?
"What does it say about Fletcher's view about gender politics that he believes that boys don't have it in them to look up to women as heroes" In all fairness, at the time one of the most commonly repeated arguments in favour of a female doctor was the shortage of role models in media for young girls. It's quite interesting hearing the attitude to the argument when it's flipped on it's head. In addition there was (and still is) a notable lack of male role models that favour peaceful and diplomatic solutions over ones involving big guns and broken teeth. So while it may have been an absurd statement that Jodie's run would result in some kind of crimewave (not counting Chibnal's writing, of course..), there is some validity to some limited aspects of the arguments presented. It's just unfortunate that the arguments were presented in such a ludicrous and sensationalist manner by a total wazzock.
I do like how WhoCulture refers to NuWho as a "revival", not a "reboot" or "relaunch", where the show just continues after a long "hiatus"... giving ClassicWho its due...
I had no problem eith the sunglasses at the time. Now though since you can literally buy smart glasses that actually do more than his did, they make kittle sense. They need to find s a way to write them out of the cannon , make them ours snd not his.... Also what is evers deal with moffat? His run was by far the best. I dont remember sny rubber farting sliens under his watch
All that matters to me is how I feel when I watch doctor who. I can't explain it but it makes me feel safe , comfortable in my own skin and somehow as though I'm part of it all. I know how I sound saying this but I make no apologies for it.
We really need another female Doctor pretty soon, I would say. And continue to vary. Trouble is, whenever there's a regeneration in the offing, people always fixate on someone similar to what they've already seen. Whereas I feel I've been blindsided four times since 2009. Six if you count incarnations that we've met in passing.
-The daleks in color is ultimately unnecessary, it's new score is terrible and the edits are also terrible, they removed a critical plot point to " keep continuity" (susan being chosen to get the anti radiation drugs was due to her being the only other person that could unlock the TARDIS without melting the lock, not because she was the only one that could walk) - Sonic shades controversy was dumb.... ultimately the sonic shades were actually better than the sonic screwdriver, but the doctor and their stories are better written without it. - The jenny x vastra kiss controversy came from idiots that don't support lgbt -
It’s for all ages, but has always been largely aimed at children, especially earlier on. Besides, Avatar the Last Airbender was also made for children and managed to be one of the best-told stories in recent history, while regularly tackling heavier themes than your average Doctor Who episode.
Yes, the upset fangirls that the twelfth Doctor wasn't still young and hot so they could still pine over him takes the cake. Wonder if they were some of the ones who later wanted to ship 12 and Clara together, one of the best platonic relationships the Doctor and a Companion have ever had. I would say they should go watch from Face the Raven thru to Hell Bent to see how far the Doctor would be willing to go to save someone they truly love. Did they still have that opinion by that point? Think not.
Capaldi is adorable! How anyone could say otherwise, I don't know. When I was a little kid (4-5 years-old; Pertwee's reign), one of my older sisters (8 years older than me) would genuinely hide behind the sofa when the Daleks came on. I loved them! Still do 😂 Some people will complain about anything!
Dumb . The age thing I mean. It's literally a show about a being that transforms into different versions of itself so could be any age .Isn't that the point ?
God I remember the female doctor I was like well the show just fell off a cliff then they put that gay dude in there and I was like oh they picked up a shovel
Well Ellie. I think the best, easiest, most responsible and undoubtedly most popular solution to the non ginger Doctor problem…… is for the BBC to cast Ellie Littlechild as the next Doctor. The perfect redhead 👩🦰 Fantastically Brilliant.
@WhoCulture Be sensible if Ellie was offered a role in Doctor Who it would be as River Song's daughter. and if she was offered the role her screams of joy would be heard as far away Gallifrey!
I heard no complaints when river magicaly produced the glass flume. Or should i say "disgracefully" produced as dhe put it . That caused some akward questions from my 7 year old kid .
@@GabePuratekuta I literally never said they literally were. The show is not scary. It was not scary when I was a kid. Ergo the concept of - literally or metaphorically - hiding from the show (or the "nasty things" therein) because it is supposedly scary is unrelatable.
They never said it was the darlek promoting violece and cruelty . If i remember correctly that is what was being done to the darlek in that episode . Come on now
Since the timeless child is canon... The first regeneration of The Doctor was a little girl Soo... Technically that was a straight kiss!😂( 0:03 ) That guy should be in Jail and those people who kissed The Doctor!😂 JAIL!
I will admit...if I saw an older movie (this happened with Arsenic and Old Lace) in black and white watching it in colour later was jarring and I tended to turn it off. And I was born in the 80s.
I had pretty much stopped watching by the time the Sonic sunglasses were introduced, and when I saw them for the first time I said no and didn't watch for years. Will have to give them a fair run now and watch the series
The “not ginger” thing is made funnier by the fact that David Tennant’s ginger hair for the first series of Good Omens got him so much stick. I’m wondering if that’s why Crowley’s hair in series two of Good Omens is dark red. The shade number is apparently 666! 😂
I'm catching shit for this, but... aside from the 12th Doctor, why does every Doctor sound British? Hell, even David Tennant's 10th Doctor had a British accent despite being Scottish. I mean, aside from the fact that it's a British show, I haven't heard an in-universe reason. Maybe the TARDIS mistakes accents for being their own languages? I get why no one wants a non-UK actor playing The Doctor, but if it DOES happen, like if it's a situation where there's literally no other choice, I'd at least choose someone with a live theater background. Patti Lupone, Anthony Rapp, Wilson Cruz, Uzo Aduba and (despite her age) Rita Moreno would probably make great Doctors, even if they're just playing the role in the odd Big Finish audio drama. I know Lupone has quite the fanbase in the UK due to her work on the West End.
Scottish is British, you mean why does he sound English. If they changed it then an army of anti-SJW's will moan and complain and say the show is 'ruined now' for 'pandering to woke ideology' by changing the Doctor's accent to one that isn't English, so that's the reason why.
Wait, hold up, there's an "international Mens" day? Isn't that Every day? Why would we need a day? We've had every day for centuries. That's kinda bonkers. Like making the animals of the world celebrate humans day.
