10 Engines That Won't Last 60,000 Miles (Because They Are Junk)
These are some of the worst engines ever. These are cars that are unreliable and I don't even think they'll make 60 000 miles because the engines are so bad. We'll go in depth on these engines from companies like BMW, Ford, Audi, Hyundai, Jeep, Chevrolet, Nissan, Subaru, and more.
I'll tell you what plagued these cars, and how their #reliability is impacted by these #engines, which are some of the worst #cars to buy today. They just won't last, and you can pick much better vehicles for your money. In fact, at the end of today's video I'll show you some cars with much better reliability so you can figure out where you should spend your money!
Where we believe that Life's Too Short To Drive Boring Cars so we just don't and you shouldn't either.

Hyundai has had so much experience replacing their 2.0 Turbo engines that when mine failed at 90,000 they shipped and installed a new one in just over a week. Supplied a rental car too. Doesn't excuse the bad engine design, but it made the situation better than it could've been.

They know exactly what they're doing. They don't want it to last. They want it to fall apart in a few years so you get a new one almost the instant you stop paying on the old one. Build cars right, they last. Cars last, people don't buy new ones anywhere near as often. Revenue, new car sales plummet. Stocks plummet. You can see why they don't do this anymore...

Definitely. My dad had a 750IL which he thought he got a good deal on in the 1990s. Though it had a huge V12, it also had insane issues, the catalytic converters got so hot they melted and fused together no fewer than three times before he sold the thing (each time the repairs cost > $6,000) and decided to swear off imports for a while. For a man who used to buy Mercedes, to end up going with Fords and a Jeep later in life, the BMW seemed to earn a dark mark in my mind. He did at least buy my mom a Mercedes station wagon again before he passed away, but that BMW was the most expensive vehicle for unexpected maintenance that I have ever been that close to personally.

As an automotive engineer I can say, I'm completely appalled by manufacturers rushing to produce new models just to cope with competition, when we tell them this new design needs the test of time, they say we're not being innovative, its sad that consumers are now having to do extensive research before buying a car and not may of them do.
@Dosalt

Problem is you start off with a complex design that is based on a previous design right from the sketch and make it ultra complex. Blame it on the project manager or your supervisor
@dcgregorya5434

There's no amount of research that will help you with a brand new engine in a new car though. Gotta hope for the best. I’ve had multiple vehicles with the 2.4 EcoTec and to be honest, I’ve never had any of these issues with them. We bought a 2008 Pontiac G6 used back in 2012 with 40,000 miles on it. We still drive it today, having 145,000 miles on it. I’ve had to put one catalytic converter (pre-cat attached to the exhaust manifold as the car has two of them) and I replaced the VVT solenoids, once. Other than that, routine maintenance, oil changes, and proper flushes. Car still runs strong today. We also had a 2014 Chevy Equinox that we put 40,000 miles on it until we turned it in; but only because my wife was pregnant with our third child and we needed something larger. The only repair to that vehicle was also the VVT Solenoids once(which are cheap and very easy to do). Other than that, regular oil changes and routine flushes. My parents even have a 2014 Chevy Captiva Sport with the 2.4 EcoTec and have put over 100,000 miles on theirs with no major repairs. The shop I take my work car to (it’s a fleet vehicle, I generally do most repairs to my own vehicles) was talking about the same issues with vehicles with the 2.4 EcoTecs. Everything from oil consumption to timing chains as well. I mentioned well that’s strange, I’ve never had issues with any of them I drive. They laughed and asked, “Do you change your oil regularly”? I stated yes, and they responded, “That’s why”. A majority of the engine issues experienced on 2.4 EcoTec is not from poor design, but rather poor maintenance scheduling. I’m not saying that some people who do proper maintenance don’t experience the same issues, but many of them are actually avoidable.

Modern engines tend to use more oil due to greater heat, low tension rings, etc., so vehicles with 10K oil change intervals may use 3 quarts of oil between oil changes (depends on the vehicle). Cars come in with 2 quarts of oil in the system. Very few people actually open the hood of their vehicles. VVT and timing chain tensioners can also work off of oil pressure. Sure, there are going to be issues.

Avoid all Stellantis group brands if you are looking for recent and reliable gasoline with after-sales service. Former owners of a 1.2L Puretech 110hp, we only had problems with: faulty segmentation, excess oil consumption from 60000 km, 1L every 1000 km, ventilation broken, belt in the oil to replace, speakers sometimes broken. Never heard of or had the problems he speaks of with the Altima. We bought a new 2002 and had it until 2017 . It had 265k and oil consumption until we sold it was maybe a half quart ever 3000 to 4000 miles. Now here were the problems. Head gasket blew at 122k, air conditioning clutch, 6 belt tensioners, 3 crank sensors, 4 camshaft sensors, transmission at 212 k . One time the lights wouldn't turn off until I disconnected the battery. The shifter interlock broke after 4 years so I rigged a piece of plastic to hold it down with the cover piece. The weather stripping around the doors was garbage. This is why I will NEVER own a crappy Nissan again they are the Japanese version of Chrysler/Dodge. From now on its Honda/Acura and Lexus/Toyota.

Cambelts are OK....but you have to replace them at the recommended intervals. Have owned a few cars with belts and no issues. Chains CAN be less maintenance but stretched chains have been a big issue on some cars. Never could figure out why people don't do recommended maintenance on cars and than complain when something goes wrong. Worst is those who put off changing oil....I always change mine at 3000 mile intervals...even for the cars running full synthetic oil. Oil is cheaper than a new engine. @@ECPP I think that was the period where GM enlisted Porsche's help in designing a quality 4-cylinder engine. The design specified a certain type of cylinder bore liner, but GM decided to eliminate in order to - you guessed it - save costs. As a result, the pistons and cylinder bores wore out very prematurely leaving you with an engine with no compression and hence ruined.
@zeus014
@zeus014 3 года назад
The cylinder bores were cast into the aluminum block. The block was impregnated with very hard silicon particles. The cylinders were then etched to remove the top few micron of aluminum, leaving the silicon behind as a more wear-resistant surfaces for the piston rings to ride on. In theory, a brilliant idea. In (GM) practice, Vega engines started burning oil at around 50,000 miles and wearing out completely shortly thereafter. The cast iron heads and the heat-cycle-related head gasket issues didn't help either. It *should* have worked. After all, the Porsche 928 V8 engine used the same technology with much success. So why didn't it work for GM in the Vega? Bean counters reducing the amount of silicon? Improper casting?

For anyone interested, the Mazda lineup is great, I have the inline 4, turbo and it handles perfectly for a 2021 vehicle and they just came out with an inline 6 turbo that I had the pleasure of test driving and it feels incredibly smooth and powerful. My personal vehicle has new turbo inlet pipes and a JB4 tuning system to push 23lbs of boost into the engine while it usually does 15-17lbs. It’s not a wallet killer either, I have the Carbon edition, leather heated seats, sunroof, auto lift gate and remote start on my phone. The Bose sound system and apple/Samsung CarPlay comes standards along with more driving sensors than I would’ve expected. All under 40k, mine was about 35k off the boat.

It's disappointing how far the German cars have fallen, from A to V. I don't have any issues w/ the TDI Diesels though. That situation was internal politics. I leased a '03 1.9 TDI Golf 4-door automatic & it was a fantastic car. FWD so it was great in the snow, 42 mpg @ 70 mph on the interstate, comfortable for 4, & a great highway car. So VW discontinued the TDI based on implied circumstances. It's the US emissions that are far to strict w/ no tangible proof of validity.

Good video and information! My 2013 VW GTI 2.0 TSI engine has been fantastic, but I believe VW/Audi had a few years to work out the bugs. At 148k miles, the engine has only needed the ignition coils that you mentioned. I can go 10K miles per oil change (mostly freeway) and only burns 1 qt in that time. I do know I was relieved to find that 2012 was the last year of timing chain tensioner issues! I believe a recent complaint of these TSI engines is an intake manifold leak which will cause the Check Engine (MIL) light to come on due to the unmetered air causing a leaning condition at idle. Not a mechanical issue, but still a problem. Overall I have been thrilled with my first German car. I'd buy another GTI in a heartbeat if I were in the market.

The TSI manifold has a swirl air butterfly near the intake valves. The plastic gets play on the shaft. When the ECU can’t control the shaft via feedback to the position sensor. The check engine light comes on. Replace the whole manifold assembly.

My experience is very similar. I have a 2013 VW Tiguan with a 2.0 TSI that has 164K miles currently. Two of the coils failed at around 150K. I changed the first, then the other three when the second failed a month later. It burns about a quart of oil every oil change (@ 10K), and I have to top it off every few weeks, but that's normal for most cars I've had with high mileage. I keep a little in the back just in case I need it. And I have a persistent 0299 code from the waistgate flap on the turbo not sealing well (apparently they can deform over time from heat), but it's mostly just a nuisance code that I clear and forget. This little car has been a workhorse for me.

I received a notice from VW that they're extending my warranty on my 2013 VW CC to 120k but only if the CEL comes on AND it's the plastic intake manifold leak problem....This thing has been a headache the last 3 yrs. I bought it from Avis at 26k miles. It was sill newish until the water pump started leaking and the PCV breather started causing misfires and one fuel injector failing. I didn't realize these TSI engines need a carbon clean every 50k and it's not for the faint of heart. Mine hesitates on stepping on the gas and still does after replacing the breather assm. I've ALWAYS used Premium fuel, but who knows what the renters used...no doubt regular unleaded.

I owned a 3rd gen Rx7 with the 13B sequential TT engine , which was bar none, the least reliable car I ever owned. From heat soaking issues that would render the car unable to be started until the engine cooled down, to chronic flooding issues, necessitating the removal of the leading spark plugs in order to blow down the engine, to the rats nest of rubber vacuum hoses which often turn to plastic and VSV's that become brittle and break both due to the heat produced by the rotary engine and it's turbos. It's not just the RX8 that wont last, the FD's engine might make it to 60k, but your going to need a complete rebuild at about 75,000 miles, a virtual guarantee. Never, ever trust one of these as a daily driver.

Fix it again Tony...Aka Fiat Chrysler along with Nissan are some of the crappiest cars going down the road. Had a fleet of cars at my business. I really didn't care whose name was on them.. Several my customers were new car dealerships. so I always bought a variety of cars up to about 15 car a year. Employees put approximately 5000 to 8000 Miles a month. Nissan and Chrysler were the worst Vehicles I've ever seen in my life. VW was a 3rd place. I could never keep one of these cars more than a hundred thousand miles because of drain my wallet once the extended warranty was out. My Japanese and some Korean cars were able to go hundreds of thousands of miles. Many with original ac and water pumps lasted about 200k without even so much as a water pump going out.

Subaru took their legendary 2.0 wrx engine and basically bored it out to a 2.5, very thin cylinder walls (head gasket probs), added an aluminum flake for cylinder support. Used the same amount of cast aluminum in the 2.5 pistons too, also shortening the piston skirts. (fuel economy and value engineering). And the worst part was adding more stroke on top of everything, drastically increasing stress on the engine. You turbocharge that "pos" it's a buzzsaw. The natural aspirated 2.5's were ok. Sad story for the turbo models.🤷

Prince engines used in the second generation mini have a number of key faults that substantially reduce their life, from failing timing chains on the turbo model, ineffective oil scraper rings causing high oil consumption, and critical plastic components cracking resulting in loss of coolant.

I’m considering a MINI for a first car but I’ll stick to the R50 generation as I’ve heard far too many problems with the Prince engines.
