"Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that two stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Crom... so grant me one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then the HELL with you!"
Yes this when I first watched it put chills down my spine. SO many great lines " Do you want to live forever?" - great line given the context of why it was being said. Let us grab the world by the throat and let it give us what we desire. etc.
In the books he never prayed to Crom because it wouldn't make any difference. The belief is Crom gave men all that they needed to survive and if you didn't make it ,it was your own damned fault
"I have known many gods. He who denies them is as blind as he who trusts them too deeply. Taken from "Queen of the Black Coast" A Conan story by R.E. Howard. One of the most exellent lines ever writen in my opinion.
Fun fact... the original cut of this was nearly 3 hrs long and contained loads of more violent scenes and fights. It was a proper proper 18 rated movie. For the last 2 years I’ve been trying to find the footage to put together a special Millius cut to be released as a 45th anniversary and a documentary. I have some interesting people on board but the footage is thought to be lost. But last year just before the pandemic I got intouch with a guy who had in his possession several cans of original film that hadn’t been opened for 40 years. This could contain the missing footage. I’m hoping that people would be interested in seeing this new cut and documentary. If anyone in interested in this project leave a comment. Watch this space.
I’m from Cross Plains, Texas where Robert E. Howard lived. His former home is a museum to the Conan universe. Who knew Conan was from a small town in Central Texas?!
Actually your mistaken Conan is a talkshow host from Los Angeles with a degree from Harvard. He often hears the lamintation of the women when he cracks a joke
@@alanfoster6589 I know! We’ve talked about that in the past. I’m the guy who found your work in the grocery store in CP as a teen. I’ve read most of your stuff since. Just re-listened to Spellsinger again. I just missed you in Palau, sadly. That was years ago now. I’m in Alaska these days. Always good to make connection with you as we have across the years.
It’s crazy how in the books he was portrayed as more invincible. I remember a part where his leg gets caught in a bear trap but his calf muscles were so hard it did very little damage. Or when he played a game of mercy with a dude that could break a bull’s neck with his bare hands
What I love about Conan is that he's not just brawny guy but a smart warrior who always finds a way to overcome the odds, whether it means overcoming an army of soldiers, monsters and outsmarting a powerful sorcerer and other supernatural creatures.
not smart. wise. the old gut feeling was strong since he was a barbarian 1st and not something he could hide from society. he didn't know how the "thing" worked. but he'd know if it was good/evil. he'd instinctively know. this thing keep covered. that thing 1,000 bandits would bid against, in an auction; but a gift to the right person yields safer results. ingenuity. you have it or u don't. it can't be taught. he IS that brawny guy. but smart enough to know he's stupid. he's from a nomadic bartering barberous people. he doesn't fall for traps. he sets them.
@@tonyb7615 Actually Conan was smart. As he travelled he learned many languages, as a soldier he learned tactics and how to utilize them. Conan became a skilled sailor, thief and just about everything else. These weren't skills he had in his early days, but were learned. That shows intellligence.
Fun fact Robert E. Howard was a big fan of H.P.Lovecraft and they wrote each other discussing different topics but Howard wrote some stories in the Cthulu Mythos as well which is pretty awesome
Have you read their letters? Robert E H was constantly talking about the civilizational threat of Barbarians at the gates. It took me twenty years to understand his woes.
In Conan lore there's a deity called Dagoth, also Dagon, or Great Old One Dagon. Basically functions as Cthulhu of Hyborian-verse. That's not the only reference and example to his friendship and familiarity with Lovecraft in his books and stories but one of the most obvious ones.
I was doing a research paper on Howard in high school, and found out about his friendship with Lovecraft, which led to Lovecraft creating this writers pen pal forum to help other writers who weren't getting gigs like they should, needless to say the paper went of the rails after page 1
I have listened to all the Conan stories in audio book format. One story really jumped out at me in the Lovecraftian regard. Conan once mentioned how there are ancient and powerful beings lurking out beyond our world. I think he had encountered one that seemed angelic but sinister. He said that was a lesser creature to what lay out there, like a flea.
This character has meant so much to me over the decades. As a Freshmen in high school, I was a shy nerdy kid who somehow got befriended by a popular athletic senior named Paris. He was so damn cool. Anyway, he introduced me to Conan via Savage Sword (this was in the 80s). Boom! I was hooked (on the character). Silly as it sounds, I used Conan as a basis for how I wanted to be as a man (without all the killing☺). It actually helped. Just love the character, by Crom!!!!
Haha a friend of mine, wanted to start sword building, when he went out in the country, along w/ sword lessons... 🙄 Sadly he even lost contact with his comics initial inspiration.. Seems like a tainted old marine (early retiree) was the only one, who had the will & clear mindset to strive for his own custom made swords, literary from scratch-a true legend
I’m the same as you except here in California Long Beach I was short and chubby and pathetic but watch Conan and read the books and wanted to be like him so I work out learn how to fight and be smart once I hit highschool I was tall and strong and focusing on myself while helping people and now I graduated gonna join the marines or army don’t know yet
My favorite quote involving Conan is (paraphrased) "Barbarism is the constant state of mankind. Civilization is a whim and ultimately Barbarism will always triumph" Looking at how humanity is, REH was spot on. My favorite all time story is "Hour of the Dragon" with "People of the Black Circle" a close second.
@@waynepurcell6058 Red Nails shows the dangers of Feminism and metoo in society. Both factions destroyed because "believe All women." Especially when she tells you she wants you.
@@Aenarion28 Feminism and female emotionalism inside our governments and institutions are destroying the fabric of society. The West is falling almost specifically because of feminism. Pretending the sexes are equal in all respects has been disastrous and the more ruinous things gets the more they try to censor and prevent this from being discussed. Notice I don't say that one sex is better than the other, but the fact is they are not equal in the things they do or what they are generally capable of. Before the 20th century this was actually considered a strength.
@@Toddcinca my wife and I follow this as well. In some things I'm better, in others she is better. Point is use it to your advantage and to compensate in what you lack. Feminists don't realize or refuse to accept that femininty is how you control your man. Instead of "get rid of your porn or you aren't getting any for a month" it should be "you don't need porn when you have me. As a matter of fact, do you want me to dress up like those girls around the house?" The first and typical argument feminists use is just guaranting that the adult material stays since she's already threatened him with an embargo. All it will do is result in a new partner being sought. The second ends the argument by giving something for something.
Those 2 plus Beyond the Black River for me make up my top 3. I got into them by finding an old beat up copy of The Hour of the Dragon from the 70s when all 5 parts were first put together in a Goodwill. Loved them since.
@Silky Cherry here's something intresting, the first time Red Sonja was convinced was not as Red Sonja, but as Red Sonya of Rogatino, in Robert E Howard's"Shadow of the Vulture" where she is the side charecter to Landsknecht Henrich Von Klambech in a historical fiction account of the Seige of Vienna agaisnt the Ottoman Empire and the main villain, "The Vulture" who is the head of the Akinji of the Ottoman Army
My favorite Conan scene from Howard's stories are when Conan is crucified, and the leader of a band of thieves lowers the cross to the ground and gives Conan the chance to live IF Conan frees himself (with nails through his hands and feet). Conan does free himself, and I always wondered if that didn't reflect the agnostic Howard's view of Christianity: Jesus died on the cross but Conan wasn't going to die for anybody. Conan was a Nietzschean superman with a will to power, although I strongly doubt Howard ever read Nietzsche. People get Howard's Conan confused with the Conan portrayed in films: Howard's Conan is a good-natured rogue, a man's man and a ladies' man who is bold, cunning, and sometime chivalrous, feared and respected by his enemies, not the brooding stoic portrayed by Schwarzenegger. I love both Conans, but Howard's Conan is smarter and more ambitious than the film version. Conan rose to be king of Aquilonia in Howard's stories, although he was dethroned by a sorcerer's plot and had to use his wits more than his muscles to defeat his opponent. I'd love to see Queen of the Black Coast brought to the screen (the story where Conan finally meets a woman he considers his equal, the pirate queen Belit). It's a riproaring good tale.
Throughout Howards writing there seems to be a general dislike for organized religion. Often corrupt and selfish, whereas he usually appauded the "noble savage".
Olgerd Vladislav was the Leader of the thieves, who were Turanian, roughly based on Mongols, Conan later crushed his swordarm with one hand and deposed him.
I think you are reading too much into it. Conan isnt Nietzchean at all. Conan DOES believe in gods, he just doesn't have much use for them, but he is careful not to cross them either. And Mitra( the god closest to Christianity) is shown to in fact help people whose faith is strong, but also who help themselves. Mitra leads a princess to Conan, and tells her to make him her general, which she does, and she defeats a Set worshipping sorcerer by doing so. BTW.....SET IS INTO SNAKES!!! DOES THAT REMIND YOU OF ANYONE??? Could it be Satan? The main thing Howard believes, I think. God helps those who help themselves. Remember what Conan says; Crom gives a man every thing he needs; strong arm, brains, and the rest is up to you.
I read the Conan books when I was a kid. Saw the movies ( Arnie Shwarchenegger did a awesome job). I wish he would do another one. Love Old school Conan.
The only "new" Conan I want to see, is a 3 rd film with Arnold. He still has the chops at his age. And after the career hes had and all the awesome movies he gave us, I think he deserves to pick up the Atlantean sword again
One of my favorite childhood memories was the "The Adventures of Conan" live action show at Universal Studios Hollywood. My Mom bought me a plastic Conan sword at the gift shop. I remember trying to hit Jaws with that plastic sword.
I loved the original Conan film, I just feel it had an epic quality that the sequel and the Jason Mamoa just didn't have. So I'm kinda sceptical over any new films or television series that doesn't have the legendary Arnold as the titular character. Great breakdown over the history of this character. 👌
Dude arnold sucks at acting it is not him that made the first great or the second would have been too. I think momoa could have done a great job if he didn't have a terrible script and director
Say what you want about the 2011 film but to my knowledge it is the only movie or tv show to portray the Picts in a way that was pretty close to the source material.
I first discovered Conan in a tiny branch of Tuolumne County Library in Columbia State Park in California in 1958 when I was twelve.... Instantly hooked!! The best movie was Arnie's first one, the worst was his second one.... Momoa's movie wasn't THAT bad, although it failed in the end.... and the Marvel comics were great!! Favorite story?? Easy, "The Tower of the Elephant".... my heart was touched by the story of the creature....
Amazing, a documentary about Conan that features all the books, movies, comics and even the planned Netflix series. Even cosplay finds its place, but not a single word about the excellent computer game Conan Exiles. Must be hard to ignore that in 2021.
one of my favorite fantasy world/character.... i really hope the new series turns out great. i love the first movie, and i like both he second and the new one is very underrated, i like it.
The Whole Wide World movie w Vincent D'onofrio as Robert E Howard is an AMAZINGLY UNDERRATED MOVIE!!! Conan's story told by Vincent to Renee Zellweger's character is A MASTERPIECE ♥️♥️♥️
"There comes a time, thief, when the jewels cease to sparkle... when the gold loses its luster... when the throne room becomes a prison... and all that is left is a father's love for his child." - Surprisingly deep scene from Conan the Barbarian (1982)
That movie is a real deep thinker. Conan the Barbarian (1982) is my favorite movie easily of all the Conan films. It’s a shame Conan the Destroyer went mainstream. Not a bad movie but not the epic film it should have been.
I wish I could live out one of these fantasy books and be like Conan for a while. To those who are interested in such things, my 3 favorite aviation/science fiction art books are: - Icon by Frank Frazetta - Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson - Beyond the Horizon by John Harris
The very first month that my family finally got CABLE, Feb of '83 i believe the 2 movies that were released to be played over and over and over were Conan the Barbarian and Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Khan lol. I was 12 and mustve seen both flics 200 times
I can't imagine Conan without the artwork of Frank Frazetta, the cover paintings on the books were outstanding. The original Robert E Howard stories are probably my favourites but the L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter books are equally as entertaining. Having recently read HP Lovecraft stories it is easy to see the inspiration of Howard's monsters, no surprise then that they were contemporaries.
Yeah, the writings of Lovecraft and the writings of Howard are a "shared universe" (along with Clark Ashton Smith) and they liked to referenced each other. Lovecraft has a reference to Conan in one of his stories, too, if I recall.
Been reading CTB and SSOC since the 70's and have amassed around 400 or so copies of both. My kids all read them and now my grandchildren read them and love the adventure and sorcery.
Yeah they need that sequeal because all of us fans know that Conan becomes king of Aqualonia but they should have done it years ago because Arnold is too old for the part.
Conan is pretty much the blueprint for every muscle bound barbarian since. Any video game or role-playing representation of a barbarian that has muscles, long hair and a big sword is basically Conan.
I love Conan the Barbarian (Arnold film only). I saw it as a child and easily became my favorite film. Is the character I associate most with. It also inspired me to start weight lifting during my teen years and grow long hair like the character. I didn’t stop weight lifting but the long hair only lasted about a year. Go figure.
I loved John Milius's "Conan the Barbarian”, but Arnie's Conan resembled Howard's Conan in name only. Arnie's Conan spent his life in slavery, the very antithesis of Howard's barbarian. Lastly, I'm a little amazed at the relative dearth of artwork from John Buscema, the greatest Conan artist in comics.
I’m looking forward to the Netflix series. However, what I’d most like to see is the 10 film series that Oliver Stone envisioned with his awards-winning filmmaking, perhaps as a TV series.
I'd also add John Buscema as probably the best comic artist for Conan anything. I am lucky enough to own some comics that I still feel to this day is some of the best artwork ever done.
I read the Conan novels while bed ridden after almost dying after being hit by a honda. I realy enjoyed Robert Jordan's novels of conan the best of the 40-ish that I read.
I think a good premise for a new Conan movie would be the new Conan meeting the old king Conan. (Arnold). That would be a good way to pass the torch. Oh, ya. A decent story would help too.
Please Netflix gods, let your Conan series have the same epic music as in 1982 and the stories be gritty as the ones with the Dark Horse comics. You will be honored in history forever if so.
The one thing the 2011 movie got right was his fighting style quickly moving and expert with any weapons Arnold was great but his version moved too slow compared to the stories description of his fighting style
The commentary for the 1982 Conan movie talks about how Conan's sword was top heavy and weighed more than a real sword. I always appreciated that they were swinging hefty weapons and it didn't look like they were swinging broom sticks around. It made the fights less cartoony
@@Thickcurves momoa got a lousy script, direction, and production. The start of the film with Conan as a child running the egg race was pretty spot on for Conan. I know the child was not Momoa, but Momoa could have done it if he had been with a studio that cared about the subject versus making things look like a Hercules and Xena episode.
The land lays red behind me. The women cry with sorrow. The sound trumpets me forward via the crunch of bones, my sonnet. My enemies crushed, my friends cheering, I want more destruction in the next clearing!
Cimmerians were a real people that lived in the early 1st Millenium in the Northern Caucus Mtns and the steppes to the north all the way to the Donbass, having been pushed southwestward by the Finno (early Finns) a thousand years earlier. Interestingly at this time a tribe of them sailed all the way to Wales and Ireland; hence Cymru. Scythia eventually drove them into east central Anatolia and the Danube River basin. Around the same time the Amazons also fleeing Scythia after losing a battle sailed across the northern Black Sea to Samara, modern Odessa region and finding the horse-riding warrior men and women to be like spirits intermingled and eventually gave rise to the Samaritan Empire
I’m surprised you didn’t mention that the very reason for the tone of the animated series was the popular success of He Man franchise? They used the popularity of Conan to cash in on a He Man clone with everything from the eclectic cast of friends, the recurring bad guy, and the moral lessons; all tropes from the He Man universe, which had transferred itself to a lucrative line in toys and other child friendly saleable goods. That was the obvious inspiration and DNA of the Conan Cartoon.
and the obvious inspiration for he-man wasn't fantasy d&d or tolkein. it was sword and sorcery. he man, brawn but not "might is right". skeletor, the sorcerer in "sword and sorcery". hey dipshit. he man wouldn't exist to sell toys if not for bob howard in the early 30's.
There's an free app in the Android Play-Store called "Conan The Master Stories" where you can read Robert E Howard's work. It includes a whole "Story" with the history of his world at the bottom of book-select screen, IIRC, which I unfortunately read last.
In the sequel that he did with Wilt Chamberlain, the script called for Wilt's character to pick up Arnold by the throat with one hand , and shove him above his head into the wall. They were rigging the stunt, and Wilt came up and told them it all wasn't necessary. He told Arnold he was going to grab him by the throat and that Arnold should hold onto Wilt's hand like he was doing chin ups. Wilt then lifted him , with one hand over his head and placed him against the wall while the crew watched in shock. Wilt could bench a bit over 600lbs!!!! Arnold was nothing LOL.
The way Thorgrim looks at his hammer after felling a mahoosive marble column: " By set, an instant 40k thunder hammer upgrade!" But it is nothing in the face of THE sword wielded by the reluctant champion of Crom!
The movie Kull the conqueror actually came from the third script which was supposed to be Conan the conqueror but because he was wrapped up making T2 the studio moved ahead
I loved that cartoon! .The reason the Jason Momoa film failed is because people wanna see the real embodiment of these archetypes they don’t wanna see imposters. Arnold Schwarzenegger has lent his nuances and visage, even his soul to his character he’s brought Conan to life and it’s time to give king back his crown, if your fail to do so the franchise will wither. HAIL KING CONAN
By Crom, what I really want is for Marvel to sign up Zack Snyder and make R-Rated Savage Sword of Conan in black and white or very muted colors but strong red color for bloody scenes in an episodic format for his different adventures. Don't know why no one has thought of doing that so far. If properly made, it can be one of the best episodic programme
They actually had to make the Atlantean Sword bigger because the one they were using in the movie looked small next to Arnold when he was using it ....
I want to give a Tribute to Robert Howard who creates a lot of Heroes. ..Conan, Kull, Red Sonja, Salomon Kane. It's a shame he commited suicide at 32 but all what he wrote is fantastic..Elric has been written by Moorcock later in the 60. Marvel made a comic where they are together. If you are able to find it you will notice how the drawning are Amazing.
Same actor that played "Rexor" in the first film played the "Elite Swordsmen" in the 2nd film. He had died in the first film from the trap and Conan made that impaled him. So the second film they got to do a sword fight together. He was also in Gladiator and wore the white mask that fought Maximus. He had appeared with Arnold several more times in other films. Including Running Man
