I've been working with final cut for about 7 years but half of what you said, I didn't have a clue that existed! Favorites and snapshot blew My mind. Thank you so much. Greetings from Brazil
Three I use all the time. One, hold down option key, click drag any asset to duplicate it. Works on Mac OSX too, not just FCPX. Two, hit M twice to add a marker, with options (standard, to do, chapter), at the playhead. Three, shift-command-V to paste attributes, after a cmd-C of course. Great for quickly replicating attributes from clip to clip.
Tyler the advice on media management and the practices you use alone are worth gold! I'm going to start implementing them in my FCPX projects. The tips shared here are going to save SO MUCH time!!! THANK YOU 🙏🏼
One alternative to creating compound clips of A-roll (or any clip for that matter) is to "Open" the clip. Select the clip in the Browser or Timeline and go to Clip > Open Clip (you can assign it to a keyboard shortcut). This lets you adjust anything - color, audio, transform tools, etc - to the clip and have it be reflected anywhere in the Library.
This video should be required for every FCPX user....helped me stay organized and efficiently manage my footage more than any other video I've seen....combined. I'm sure I'm thinking the same thing as everyone else here - I wish I had known these tips since the very beginning. THANK YOU TYLER!!
Just want to say that this video has absolutely CHANGED my workflow. Seriously Tyler, I can't believe how much this video has helped me out. You are seriously incredible.
That range tip for the audio is a game changer! Can't believe I've lived without that all these years. Also had no idea that snapshots and duplicates worked differently under the hood. Thanks for this great video!
The last tip you gave on the audio range selection is going to be huge for my work flow! I spent a lot of time putting in markers to lower or raise the audio. Taking in this video series to update my game! Thanks.
I have watched this video so many times, and it's so helpful! Thank you for breaking this down as straightforward as possible. I always refer back to this when starting back up with FCP. Favoriting your footage is a game-changer for editing - it's already saved me so much time. Thank you for sharing all of this valuable information, Tyler!
Very good video! I‘ve struggled so hard with my organisation in the past and thats why my mac was full all the time… This is the first Fcpx Tipps Video I‘ve watched which taught me how I can organise my lybaries and files so that I have enough space to move in my computer Thank you
One of the first videos I've actually stopped, went to get a pen to take notes then watched at 0.75 in places so as not to miss anything! The library folder in a root folder idea, Alt+[ Alt+ ], favouriting sections of clips, snapshot saving and even audio ducking using the range option... I know that I will now use every single one of these in my workflow. Tyler, if you're ever in central Scotland, I owe you a beer👍🏻
I'm just starting to take RU-vid seriously, and I've just started with a raw vlog without any kind of editing. It's until I get the ball rolling and start to learn on the go. This video is a gem. Thank you!
Oh my gosh dood... TONS of tricks that I had no idea about! The only one I really had was the "Range tool for audio ducking" but some of those beginning tips about just setting up your file! THose are things I'll be creating some SOPs with and updating workflows. Thanks!
I purchased you Log 3 lit and used on my R5 with a Ninja V and the image was incredible SOOC. I was filming border collies in a lush green grass field. The results without any adjustments were spectacular! Thank you very much! Great job!
the fact I got Final Cut Pro x a few days ago and being a premier user and wanted to switch because of my MacBook, at first it confused me so much, the file / library system. this literally answered all my questions, thanks
Tyler this was really valuable video. Last week and last year in general I had all the media storage problem you’ve mention with fcpx. Now, I’ll just sit on my computer and copy step by step what you did and I’ll forget about it. Thank you. O yea, I love the colors that you’re seen the world in.
Great video. One point to add with deleting cache if you would still rather have the convenience of keeping them in your Library: Inside FCP, you can select your library and go to File, Delete Generated Library Files and you can remove from there. A bit more hidden but still keeps everything together. :)
The reason I like to delete form the finder is so that I don’t need to launch Final Cut. Often I’ll just go through all my recent completed projects and want to quickly clear them out
@@stalman thanks for the reply. Something I’ve discovered since writing the above: after I moved my cache externally I found that my Mac would drop frames when playing back (it’s the current 16 inch). When I moved the cache back, it no longer does that. Interesting. Just FYI if you experience that. 😀
@@SuitcaseMonkey Maybe it's because of your external drive's speed? What drive are you using? I'm planning to buy a portable SSD soon and I find Tyler's tips very useful. But if this is the problem then I'll have to dig deeper to find out.
One tip is that if you need to send projects to an editor somewhere else. Place your full res files in an external folder, as you did on here, set the storage locations of everything to “library” (opposite of what you did here), and when importing the footage, select, leave files in place, but also select “create proxy files”. That way, when you send the project (library) to the editor, your only sending the proxy files. Often for me makes a 30GB project around 1GB. Also when the editor is done he only needs to send the project back with no media, so it’s only a few Mb. Super fast. Hope this makes sense.
loving your channel! FYI, I am a long time editor and was just on the phone with apple FCP team yesterday with an absurdly weird glitch happening on my exported movies. The guy on the call checked to see how I was importing footage to FCP and turns out they dont even offer support if you import/ store footage outside the library. Very strange. He said the drag and drop method degrades the speed and integrity of FCP and should never be used. My obvious response was "uhhh what..that is all everyone does." Anyway, it was a fascinating conversation and I had never heard that before. So for my next project I will try it out...He said when the team unveiled FCP back 10 years ago or whenever, the main and first point of the presentation was the efficiency of capturing and transcoding media in the library.
Thank you for the cache tip! I had soooo many headaches with this when doing virtual concerts and the render files were getting out of control. One tip I have is detaching the audio Control-Shift-S for deleting audio clips instead of lowering the gain.
Confession time...I wasn't using the ripple cut and mannnnn I've already saved time. Love the point about keywords and organization as well. Subscribed!
I just got my new M1. I'm coming over from Adobe to avoid the subscriptions and to avoid installing Adobe on my M1. The cache tip is gold. Thank you! Been s subscriber for a while. Thanks for the helpful content.
These are fantastic tips, aimed for some obscure reason at me personally and very effectively. So many shortcut tutorials out there on FCPX but I think I took detailed notes on 8 out of 10. All real time savers, thanks Tyler.
Have yet to download FCP and begin the journey, and as the first tutorial I have watched, it got me extra enthusiastic about digging in. Thanks, Tyler!
I use FCP quite a bit and what I learned new in this video was the favourites tip and making a compound clip for longer A roll so you can global change later. I knew about both functions before, but not in this context. My contribution is to customise the 'B' key to blade tool (without command), do the same for left right brackets (as you've already done), 'Z' to direct zoom all in, '+', '-' to direct zoom in and out and so on and so forth. All the stuff you use a lot, make it a direct key. Speeds up everything wonderfully! Great video buddy!
These are pure gold! I feel like editing is my weakest skill. These are so practical and logical - great stuff, excellently presented (as always). Keep up the great work.
I learned a few new things! I didn't know about the difference between duplicate project and snapshot projects. Also, such a smart idea to send some of the favorite clips to compressor to archive. Also, the idea to save the cache location in the root folder is genius. Lots of gold nuggets here! Thanks for this!
Just great to have found this video , been editing for 3 years with FCPX and still learning with you …I have join your channel to discover more eventually. Thanks so much 🙏 Serge From Hélène & Serge channel H&S 👩❤️👨🌈🇨🇦
Great video. One thing you missed that I use a good bit is when I want to archive, I’ll export the XML file. It’s essentially a blueprint of your edit. That way I don’t have keep the project or library files. If for some reason I ever needed to go back I can import the footage and the XML and it will link it all back. Also a good way to share with an editor.
🤯 Why did I never think to change where to cache files are going?! I have also been using Premiere Pro for the last couple of years because I hated FCP filing system. I'm so glad I found this video!
Thank you so much for this video Tyler. As a person who just started RU-vid and using Final Cut Pro (self taught) this saved me a tonne of time and hard drive space.
Lots of good stuff here. I've created compound clips after I'd done the bulk of the work. Never thought to do the base editing with one. Interesting concept as it lets you leave decisions like master adjustments till later. NOT CREATING AN EVENT FIRST? Waaaa? If you didn't create the event first in FCP7 and earlier you'd be dead. Old habits die hard. The one great trick I just learned is to use an adjustment layer for closeups. I wished I'd known that years ago.
Duuuude!!!! I have been using Final Cut for years and still have found the best way to manage the media and keep a clean hardrive! Great video and very helpful.
If this video has taught me anything, it’s that I know enough to know that I don’t know at all. 😂 ima have to play this video in slow-mo. There’s so much to learn geez it’s overwhelming. But thank you for taking the time to go over this! And for those of you who don’t know Apple support can walk you through Final Cut Pro by screen share. I abuse them with phone calls. Happy editing everyone!
Been using the "Favorite" tip ever since I heard you guys talking about it on the podcast. Definitely, a life changer! Haha The file size manager will for sure help out as well and my mind was completely blown when you shared the audio "Range" tip! Lol
Thank you so much for these great tips. The one on storage location really helped me a lot. Leaving media in folders instead of in library saves a lot of space. Last week fcpx was slowing down on my Mac. Since I followed your advice, the problem was gone! Now when I am done with a project, I deleted cache folder and proxy media, optimized media and my computer space is back!
So, so good. Going to go back and watch the library/file management section again. The one thing I still can't figure out if I'm doing OK'ish or terribly badly!
Wow!!! Thanks. Best video I ever watched for fcpx. I was watching your videos a week now but I subscribed to channel. The shortcuts was amazing I hope you do one more video about shortcuts.
I never knew about the Snapshot Project feature - that would've saved me so much time of breaking apart compound clips just to make new ones. Super informative video, as always!!
It is a good idea to create folders for keywords otherwise you could be looking at a long list. One other tip is that you can batch assign spatial conform to multiple clips in the Browser screen. Open up the Inspector and make sure Spatial Conform is visible (it might be hidden). After that select your clips and choose the best option. This is a great timesaver if you have loads of clips that are acquired in a resolution that is different from your timeline.
