I am sooo happy to have found your video on making a star from conduit. It helped me to be able to make a big star for my mom. She always wanted a star to go on the hill and be lit up for Christmas. Thank you! I made mine out of rigid metal conduit and used 1/2 inch x 10 ft lengths of pipe.

I’m in the UK. I went to B&Q and got 5 2m lengths of black, 20mm wide conduit, 1 metre M8 threaded bar, and a pack of 100 M8 nuts. I measured and drilled pilot holes at 3cm 77cm 123cm and 197cm using the screw down method as shown here. Then re-drilled with a bigger drill to allow the M8 thread to pass through. I sawed the M8 thread into 8 cm lengths, for 9 pieces, and split the remaining thread into 2 longer sections. I also drilled an M8 hole in the centre of the horizontal span, to fit one of the longer threads, with the other longer thread in the inner joint directly below this (I measured 71cm between them). This is so I could mount the star on a pole with similarly spaced holes (I used an old long wooden curtain pole). This is so I can mount it on a tree. In hindsight, to save cutting up thread, I could have got some M8 x 80mm bolts instead....and perhaps a couple of longer ones for the pole mounting. Thank you for inspiring me to make a giant star.

Thanks for the metric measurement and taking time to post. I had no idea this would receive such a wide audience. I will not forget metric on my next videos.

Roman, I copied your plans on the 7ft star, and it turned out great. Thank you for the idea. My wife didn't see the video, and thought I was crazy until it cam together. You made me look like a superstar. I did show her the video in the end. But she was amazed that I could just "drill some holes and make it come out perfect"

To compute hole locations for any length of conduit: - first, mark locations for the 2 end holes - measure distance ("X") between these two locations - for distance from each end mark to its respective inner mark: multiply "X" by 0.382 (round to nearest 1/16" I'm guessing) (0.382 = sin(18deg)/sin(54deg) for you engineer types :) That's it! so for the 10' star example: distance between endpoints: 115.25" - 0.75" = 114.5" distance between each endpoint and its respective inner point: 114.5" x 0.382 = 43.739" (round to 43.75") so, measuring from left to right: mark 1 = 0.75" mark 2 = 0.75 + 43.75 = 44.5" mark 3 = 115.25 - 43.75 = 71.5" mark 4 = 115.25"

Roman, Thanks for this video! My neighbors love our annual Christmas star-but it was time for a new one! I made the Bethlehem Star for the front and this 5 point star for the back. Everyone in the valley can see this one! Can I ask, what about storing these li'l suckers? Do you take it apart or just have a very big space in your shed!? Thanks again!
@southernrrman
@southernrrman 6 лет назад
Hello Wilda, It's awesome that your stars have such great visibility! My 7 and 10-footers are assembled, and disassembled, every year. (And every couple of years I loose the bolts.) The 3-foot start stays intact. The Bethlehem star hangs sideways on a wall in the garage. The extra light rope off the bottom lays on its' own little shelf, so it stays straight.
@mitchlewis535
@mitchlewis535 2 года назад
Hello from Eastern Washington State! I'm planning to build the 10-foot star for Christmas this year. Anyone have an idea on what the exact length of rope light would be? I found a place that sells custom cut rope light. I'm estimating about 32-feet, but I'm terrible at math. If I don't get a response from anyone, Plan-B is to build it, measure it and then order the proper length. Thanks in advance!

Hi roman i was wondering if there is a formula you uses to figure out where to drill the holes. im trying to build a 6 ft star and am having a bit of trouble
@southernrrman
@southernrrman 6 лет назад
No formula, I use AutoCAD to figure it out! For 6' (72") conduit, make your holes at 3/4", 22 11/16", 44 5/16, and 71 1/4. Good Luck!

how about 41 inch conduit peices
@southernrrman
@southernrrman 6 лет назад
41 is a little tricky. Make your holes at 3/4", 16 13/16", 25 3/16", and 40 1/4. The two inner holes won't line up exactly, so you might need a slightly bigger hole. Or maybe the conduit will flex enough. Good Luck!

Do you have measurements for the small star you put together in the garage/basement?
@southernrrman
@southernrrman 6 лет назад
Hi Joshua. Glad you asked. I've had people say my dimensions are off for that old video - and they are! Plus my Wal-mart no longer sells 18-ft light rope; they've shrunk to 16-ft. So, if you can find 18-ft light rope, the correct holes are at 3/4", 22 1/2", 36", and 57 3/4 with the over-all length of 58 1/2". For 16-ft rope, cut the conduit at 49" and put holes at 3/4", 18 7/8", 30 1/8", and 48 1/4". Good Luck!

Would you suggest EMT only and double the measurements if I wanted to do say a 20-foot star
@southernrrman
@southernrrman 6 лет назад
Wow - 20 ft would be something! Assuming 2 sticks put together measures 240 inches (not sure what the coupling take up), make your holes at 1.5", 92", 148", and 238.5". I'd consider using 3/4 or 1" EMT. I've had bad luck with rainy winters and EMT. I get enough leakage from the lights to the metal to trip the GFCI breaker. You mileage may vary! Good luck and thanks for your comment.
